What a crazy pain. And a reminder to me to recheck the receipts I get for returns agains my statement. (Although you probably didn’t get a r3ceipt.) I hope the shoe gods do send you a free pair for your karma.

This is really ridiculous. Definitely get your credit card company involved if you have to. You made every effort to find out where the shoes came from that were sent to you and were not given the correct information. That is the company's fault, and they need to accept responsibility.

How frustrating indeed! Mistakes happen and are understandable, but lack of good faith is insufferable - especially from a Customer Service.
I keep fingers crossed in hope you will be able to return the shoes if you don't wish to keep them.

Oh I see! So now they're not free at all, but paid for by you. Sounds like Customer Service has really mucked you around. Hopefully the fact they were kept unworn in holding zone will work in your favour.
It's becoming like a Jack Reacher novel with all its twists, please keep writing.

I’d keep them, to be honest.
Rachylou, I would discard the insulin. It can be a very dangerous (fatal) drug if any more than a minuscule amount is injected. A single vial would last someone for potentially a few weeks.

Ugh, a very frustrating twist indeed. I hope you are able to clear things up.

I once left a Costco with a cart full of items and a very large box containing a holiday village set. The box was VERY large and had been quite expensive. My receipt was checked at the door and off I went. It wasn't until I was on my way home (from my mum's house, which was an hour from me, making that store about an hour an a half from my home) that I thought about the total and thought it had been lower than I thought. I went item by item in my head and couldn't make sense of it, so I checked the receipt when I got home and sure enough, they had simply not charged me for the village set.

I called the store and told them about the error and offered to pay them via credit card over the phone. They told me I had to come in with the product and the receipt. I told them I lived too far away to make the drive and offered to go to another Costco, then reiterated that I could give them the SKU and pay over the phone. They refused all options.

And maybe there are better people out there than I am, but I just left it alone after that. I wouldn't have been able to return to the store for several months, and the holidays I bought the set for would have been long over. I offered them everything I could think of to pay and make it right, and they refused me at every turn. So I got a free holiday village.

Update: the story has taken an unexpected and frustrating twist.

When I placed the initial shoe order back in January, it was one of several items (including clothing and multiple sizes of the same shoe) that I promptly returned together. Somehow during the return process, the 41.5 got lost at the returns warehouse, but were found a week later. I was told that I’d be refunded, and I thought I had been because they had broken up the return into two.

Looking at my order history with the company today, as well as my CC statement, I saw that I was never refunded for the pair that I had returned in January—I was only refunded for two pairs, not three. When I called for clarification, CS said it’s because I had wanted them repaired. Yes, there had been a scuff on the back, and I had inquired as to whether a non-scuffed pair was available, but I did not request a repair service.

Not only was their repair claim untrue, it was also inconsistent with the company’s policies. Whenever I’ve received slightly damaged items from them in the past, CS maintains that they must see the item first to determine whether it can be repaired—it’s not an automatic process.

The mysterious shoes that appeared a few weeks later without any invoices or order forms were apparently the repaired shoes. I couldn’t know that, however, because when I inquired into their origins on several occasions, CS insisted that the shoes were not connected to their company. Had it been made clear to me at the time that it was the repaired model, I would have sent them back immediately.

Fortunately, the mysterious pair are unworn and have never been removed from their box—here’s to a healthy skepticism of “free” gifts and being good to your feet. Unfortunately, it’s looking like I’ll have to take this up with my credit card company, since another investigation is to be carried out by the company to determine whether I can return the shoes.

As a recovering alcoholic, this is the kind of issue I would have to take to my 12-step-fellowship sponsor to make sure I wasn't acting in some unethical way or being greedy or whatever.

If I was sponsoring someone who had this issue, I would say that you have done your part to set it right. You have done the right thing, the rest isn't about you. I agree that it's probably best to set them in a holding zone for a bit in case the company gets it figured out; if they don't, then the shoes are yours to keep

Yes essentially it IS the modern economy. You've tried to be honest, put in effort, and you said that they were on sale. Most of these large companies make big profits ( although I have been interested about failures in NZ recently, even Topshop here which was backed by one of our most successful designers, Karen Walker, and her husband). So I agree with Sterling, further chasing isn't your job. I don't think it is immoral for you to not put in any more effort. You are not a thief. Nor was I when I paid for my shoes but the payment didn't go through. It should be safe to wait a month in case they demand them back, and if not, then the universe did indeed give you a gift! Impractical or no! Enjoy x

I did once get a gift from the shoe gods too. My first pair of red shoes as an adult, perhaps, aged 41. I bought them on a trip to the UK, in Debenhams or somewhere similar, paid for them with a debit card, got the receipt and all. Several weeks later, back in NZ, realised the payment never showed as having come out! It never did. Maybe they were only set up for credit cards. I'm honest and felt awkward, but they were on a big sale and this was 2002, only early days of the internet, and the other side of the world. I used to call them my free shoes! Figured they probably made enough profit to cover 12 quid.

Hmmm. What a mystery. Was there a return address that indicated it was from the company? And addressed to you? If so, I would think that you have done all that is required by contacting the company. UPS didn’t send these to you and would most likely direct you back to the company, if you could get through to someone.

I would probably set them aside for a bit in case the company sorts things out on their end and either wants them back or tried to charge you. But then I’d consider them a gift from the shoe gods.

So, a phone call and an email exchange later resulted in a bit of a stalemate. When I provided the tracking number, they reiterated that it hadn’t come from them; and when I replied, “So your company didn’t send the shoes?,” expecting a y/n answer, I was told that even though the origin scan was the same city as where their warehouse is located, the tracking number wasn’t associated with them, and to contact UPS. I feel like I’ve done my part, and it’s up to them to pursue this matter, not for me to be put on UPS’s perennial hold.

Maybe you'll luck out like I did a few years ago. I placed an order from Macys and they sent me like 6 of the same item. I had something else to return from the order so I just packed up the extras and took them to the store with me. (They didn't charge me for the extras, BTW.) Anyway, I get there and since they weren't on the invoice, they wouldn't take them back, o_O Seriously. It was quite the drama. They didn't know what to do with them and told me to keep them. In the end, I ended up giving a few to girlfriends who wore the same size and kept an extra.

About a month ago, in a fit of panic, I ordered a pair of stilettos in three different sizes. They were gorgeous, on sale, and would have filled a stiletto niche in my wardrobe—buuut they were still too expensive and impractical for life. Back they went.

About a week ago, I was notified by UPS to expect a parcel from the company that had shipped the shoes. I panicked, because I hadn’t ordered anything, and immediately called the company. CS told me that it was a glitch in the UPS system that had prompted the shipment notification. I replied that while that may be the case, the tracking number indicated that the shipment was out for delivery. Don’t worry, CS, assured me, we’re monitoring the situation and will let you know if anything arises.

Later that day, a package is delivered without any order forms or invoices. It’s the pair of stilettos in my size. No corresponding charge on my credit card, and still no follow-up.

Looks like I’ll have to make a painful phone call tomorrow.
