Breaking down of fabric and stretching out/misshapen necks are my two biggest reasons. I suspect lots of people would still wear the items but I slowly become unhappy with them. Luckily it’s usually after over 30 wears.

This is an excellent list. Thanks, all.

I find I'm personally most bothered/ annoyed by:

knits that stretch out or bag (some pilling is acceptable to me, but only if I can keep it under control)

cothes that have developed holes or tears in woven fabric from friction.

insides of footwear broken down

noticeable fading in clothing that is not meant to fade

Excellent list. The one that bothers me most is the general look of wear and lack of structure cotton can get over time. I prefer a tear in an otherwise robust looking item to that.

The reason I avoid anything acrylic is that acrylic knits are prone to fast and unstoppable stretching. It can’t be shrunk or reshaped. After donating a perfectly good sweater that I liked but could no longer wear due to too wide neck opening, I swore off it. And that sweater was less than 50% acrylic.

Gosh we have developed a very comprehensive list.

As my wardrobe changes the reasons are changing - black pants with a shine used to be common.

For me stains or colour fade are a big one, as are stretching out in knits.

I am more tolerant of wear in natural fabrics eg a linen shirt that is faded.

As I am buying better quality I am getting less clothes wearing out.

I don’t have a high threshold for visible wear on a lot of items. Exceptions are: cowboy, combat and moto boots (more refined styles I don’t want looking shabby), graphic tees, denim items like jeans and jackets, and leather jackets like motos (a blazer would be a different story).

I don’t care to keep items like blazers or blouses with hems that are showing wear or fraying, develop thin or shiny spots, or get faded or discolored. Yellowed shirts, yuk. A certain amount of pilling I can tolerate IF a shaving or removal treatment lasts more than one wear. If I have to remove pills after every wear, out it goes. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I quickly ditch items with elastic that gives out, or items that stretch and bag out and do not snap back into shape, even if they are relatively new.

Moth holes are deadly — I never have the wherewithal to have the items patched, and the holes always seem to be in the absolute worst spot (who wants a visible patch job right on the chest?).

Shoes with deep creases or gouges are gone. If a good polish or a trip to the cobbler can’t fix it, I give them up. Running shoes that start to lose their support get given away (the lady who cleans out house likes to have them!).

Faux or bonded leather items like handbags that start to peel — gone. Again, If a polish or a cobbler doesn’t do the trick, I don’t want to keep them.

Me too. While I wouldn't describe my style as RATE I have a higher tolerance for wear than some on the forum, perceiving it as not-unwelcome patina. I've been dipping my toes into visible mending this year and am very happy to wear mended knitwear. I know not everyone feels the same and that's ok -- more holey sweaters for me to get creative with!

I am wondering if I don't have any standards LOL
Seriously, although I share the list of what is considered worn out, it doesn't mean I pass the clothes/shoes on when I see something looks less than pristine.
Besides of clothing items that don't fit I usually donate/get rid of:

Clothes that are ripped in too many places or when I can't mend them

Shoes that are worn out, don't give support or are not waterproof anymore( this depends on where I use the shoes, for example tennis shoes or boots that I use for walking usually are with me until they are almost falling apart)

Stains, especially stains from deodorants that won't come off

Structure on athletic shoes can break down invisibly. I only wore my Brooks Addictions for the equivalent of 4.5 months (3x/week for 9 months) but my knees started to hurt. The soles looked new and I couldn't twist/bend those shoes. Wore my new Hoka Ones today, and what a difference! I worry about these shoes deteriorating while just sitting around unworn so I will wait to buy a replacement pair.

Lesley said : " I think the tiny holes that appear in jersey can happen when an untucked tee rubs against the underside of a granite countertop while washing dishes--more so if it's rubbing against the top button on jeans. So specific! And yet it's been the culprit for me again and again. "

Okay, this may explain the mysterious pinprick holes I've found on so many t shirts (of different brands and qualities, some I'd had for years with no problem at all ) in the exact same spot you describe, during the three years I lived in a house with marble countertops. Actually, even my apron showed increase signs of wear in the same spot. We moved in July! Thx

For pants and woven tops, it's usually blown-out knees and elbows. I typically chop one pair of jeans into shorts each summer, and wear those til the seat blows out. I've also been known to turn long-sleeve button-front shirts into short-sleeves. For knit and tees, it's usually thinning or stretched-out fabric, sometimes stubborn dinginess/discoloration that peroxide can't fix. For footwear, it's generally the tread/outsole that gives out first, as I don't wear many heavily cushioned shoes. I replace my running shoes (one pair for roads, one pair for hiking/backpacking) at least once a year. Definitely my highest turnover/most wasteful category! Always on the lookout for shoe companies that promote repair/resoling/recycling. But they also have to fit and be comfortable, so...

My big ones are:

FADING on my brights, and jeans

PILLING of knitwear .....sore point :(

Worn out shoes because I am hard on them. Inside shoe linings rip fast.

Staining on VERY old items too.

Discolouration.

Lesley, YES to that while at the kitchen sink. Wearing an apron really helps.

Good list! Definitely have that fabric breaking down thing as a hallmark. I tend to repair holes that open in the armpit or around the neckline, but when the fabric leading up to those areas starts to look thin or get hole-y itself, I know it's over. Same for a hole in the seam versus a hole near the seam in pants (although good tailors can work wonders on a big accidental tear, so it's always worth asking!).

Also, I think the tiny holes that appear in jersey can happen when an untucked tee rubs against the underside of a granite countertop while washing dishes--more so if it's rubbing against the top button on jeans. So specific! And yet it's been the culprit for me again and again. Since I became a big tucker a few years ago (for style reasons, not to prevent these holes) I no longer get these holes, so I'm convinced that's what was going on.

Those are exactly the things I thought of when I read that exchange, with holes in pants seats and misshapen Ts & sweaters first in mind.

I’m moving some of my stuff into my son’s wardrobe today, so am going through things. I tried on an old swimsuit top that I thought might be too stretched out. Verdict: no, it is not stretched out, and I still love the cut and the pattern, but I should move it along anyway; thanks to having nursed my son, part of me is gone & will never return. The cups are shaped, so it looks fine, but they are literally half empty, lol.

Jenn, this is a great list. My number one breakdown is non removable stains. Last winter I got white nail polish on new black Ponte pants that would not come out. DH gets stains on tees. That I don't always catch in time. I was painting wooden earrings with the polish when it ran out of the bottle onto my pants and the floor.
