The answer to the question of when it is too oversized is relative, I guess. It's too oversized when you don't feel fab in it even after using Angie's tips of structure. I'm sympathetic, because I really like the idea of an elegantly long, cozy cardigan, but haven't found one that looks right on petite me.

Another vote for a bit of structure -- particularly in the shoulder area. I also think that scale and proportion matter. For a petite, mid thigh probably works.

It's too big when the shoulder seams come down too far on your shoulders. Shoulder fit is the key to this look IMO.

Structure is good but also I would "think outside the box" for petite.
I think the truly long-cardi look is difficult for a real petite. Applying conventional proportion "style filters", of course.
Instead you might look for your version of the long cardigan, and it might be a regular size, not sold as "long" but still longer this year due to style shifts. And it might be longer than usual hip-length but leaner and not too BF-oversized.
Or, you might find sweaters with some pointed/asymmetrical hems give the "look" of the longer sweater, but less overwhelming. Also, look at Angie's forecast for spring, reining in volume with belting and tucking--something like that might work for you.

Structure, hmm. Si I should look to find a topper that has a bit of structure to it. Maybe a cape instead of a long shapeless cardi would work better.

Thanks all!

As Jeneva said, there has to be an element of structure to it.

And, your pants have to stay up.

I think it's personal preference, but also making sure there is some element of what Angie refers to as "structure" in the outfit to balance the over-sized fit. This could be close-fitting sleeves or pants, or wait definition, for example. Even just exposing the ankle with baggy pants and tops can make a look less overwhelming.

erikajl - that's a great question and I don't pretend to know the answer. I think on the forum you'll see completely different tolerances to "oversized" I am 5'3" and a size 4 and I either wear tailored fitted clothes or oversized. I love huge tunic sweater which I am sure many would think overwhelm me. I do know that thinner drapier knits will give you a nice look but with less excessive volume. I would be the best answer would be when you feel great in the proportion you are wearing, but Angie and others may have more concrete guidelines. Petite sizes will also give you shorter lengths and less volume. I would look at Eileen Fisher - she is a master of flattering oversized drape - see if how they style the models appeals to your eye and then you might have something to compare yourself to for reference. Hope that helps!!

So, I'm loving these over sized cardigans, but when does oversize become just too big? I'm petite, and everything is already oversized on me. I tried on every long cardi in Nordstroms, and they all swam on me. What is the secret to having this look right and not like I your 10 years old wearing your mother's clothing. I really like the long cardi, top, leggings, and boots look.
