Bijou--a kimono is a great idea for a summer item, especially with shorts. I have a ruana, but I only wear it around the house, because it slider around my shoulders too much.

Your linen pants will be great with your longer vest. I have a long silk kimono that I wear with white pants and shorts in summer, it is light and breezy but provides sun protection as well as coverage.

I never leave the house if I feel self-conscious about my clothes. I have a good range of camis and slips, so if dresses, skirts or tops are sheer, then I wear a layer underneath to provide coverage. All of my pants, trousers and shorts are opaque.

Thanks, everyone. It seems that most people are trying to offer help with my linen pants, which is not actually what I was asking. But I'm sure some of the advice is good--specific attributes of linen, etc.

I was asking about general criteria for how you decide what "passes" before you leave the house. I thought that would be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts--not just for pants, but for any clothing and accessories.

I do know a couple of you had thoughts outside of help with my pants...thoughts about my actual question. For that--thank you!

I have a thin, sheer, loose pair of printed pants I got at a market in Provence last year. They have a lining that goes partway down the leg for coverage, but I just cannot bring myself to wear them out. They are loungewear, and I bought them knowing that was their likely destination.

I try to head off any of those kinds of items before I purchase them. But if something like that makes its way into my wardrobe, I either put it in loungewear or let it go. Why try to make something problematic work when I have other things I love that I know work?

It sounds more like the shape bothered you than being sheer or thin? Or both maybe? That is a problem with linen I know. I wonder if they would feel better after going through the wash, but I know would loosen up again with wear. I would not be happy if I could only get a year of wear from the pants. And I would expect better from Quince.

I’d probably do the same thing! Or, layer a tunic or dress over them for more coverage. Dyeing them a darker color may solve the problem if you think the fabric integrity is okay. Linen is notorious for “thinning” when exposed to friction/abrasion (exactly why I’ve given up on linen for pants and stick to skirts/dresses).

I agree with everyone. I hold pants up to the light. If they're at all see through, they're out, or at least not worn out of the house. If it's a skirt, it gets a slip.

Star--good notes on this issue. Good reminder about the hair--I try to have a few cute hats for this situation.

LJP--good point about loose fits--a too-tight, or even sort-of tight shirt will ruin the whole outfit. The pants I bought online --and that see-through quality is not visible there.

Angie--they are "bone" color from Quince. They used to work with nude panties, but now seem to be taking too much the shape of my body. They are a great shape for my silhouette, but maybe not the best for a big butt.
:)

Lisa--that's great that you are so familiar with tips and tricks for wearing summer whites. These are indeed a summer off-white, and worked just fine for a while--now maybe a bit too risque.

Jaime--good overall rule. I will try to remember that--I think sometimes people second-guess themselves.

Sal--yes, transparency should be on purpose! I cannot even demote these to loungewear because there is a chance I would forget and wear them out. But if I ALWAYS wear them with my crochet/macrame vest, they will work anywhere. They are still good pants, just not good in my rear.

I think there are a couple of things at play.

1) I will wear tops where there is a degree of transparency - time and place. Not to work, not for errands, but at the beach or at home. I choose my bra carefully. This is normally when the top is designed that way.
2) Pants and skirts I am more cautious about but there are nude seamless underwear options that can help.
3) Once clothing becomes worn through I tend to not wear it - or wear it my garden only. I am scared it may rip.

I am fine with denim with a rip, or even the odd hole or mark on loungewear clothes. Just as well as I am a bit clumsy!

I always check the back view and the crotch view for bottoms. I do not like sheer or too tight bottoms for any setting. Not even a walk to the mailbox. For tops, I am always checking for fit of buttons (no gaping for button-up shirts), for sleeve tops or tanks (no bra peeking out from the side view when arms are raised), and for the back of any top, not sheer. If it's sheer I will wear a tank top underneath so you don't see the bra.

I'm especially careful about spring and summer bottoms in white or linen fabrics. Too often white bottoms are sheer and you can see pockets or underwear, even when it's nude colored. Same for linen pants. I had a pair of white linen pants from JCrew last summer that were wonderful because they were fully lined, but not heavy or too warm in the heat. For white denim and white shorts I always seek out a slightly thicker material to avoid a see through issue or a lined option.

Carol, what colour are the pants? Can you show them to us when you have a moment. Are they roomy?

If you wear solid undies that are a similar colour to your skin - you should be okay - hence not feel exposed - unless the pants are tight.

I wear white pants a lot! And very thin pattered cotton pants that are part of co-ords in Summer. I wear nude-for-me undies, and the fits aren't tight - so nothing shows through. FWIW, I'm a modest dresser, and would not have left the house if I felt exposed :)

Like Star, I also check the sides and back of my outfits at home!

I can't say I even wear what I call inappropriate or poorly fitting pieces around the house. I'm with Lise in checking the back view - one of my pet peeves is a too-tight top that shows back "fat" or the outline of a bra.

I tend to wear clothing on the looser-rather-than-fitted end of the spectrum and I wouldn't even buy anything sheer (like white pants or jeans that you can see pockets through etc) to begin with. Wrong season wearing doesn't happen either - comfort for the temperature and season dictate what I wear inside and out.

See through or almost see through bottoms are one of my pet hates. I edit out pieces like this. Just in case I forget and go out in it. My advice is to always check your back image :). This goes for hair as well. Have you ever noticed someone with a perfect hairdo in the front and a mess in the back. As someone who has hair with it's own mind this is important for me. And pants that are too tight in the crotch area, or an odd pattern placement in that area are no no's. That said, tops that are too fitted and thin are also no no's. I do wear sheer blouses but with a cami that covers up. I'm talking about Tees that are too thin and clingy. White and lighter colours are usually the culprits. I do pay extra attention to this when shopping.

I have a pair of lightweight linen pants that I wanted to wear to book club the other day. They are gauzy and light, so I need to wear the right underwear that will blend in.

I did so, getting ready for book club, but something felt off. I felt exposed. I turned around to look at the back, and the material just felt so thin. I could not exactly see through it, but I almost felt a breeze back there.

They are not threadbare, because I have had them only a year. But they have become a little worn in.

I made the (probably smart) decision not to risk it, and changed out the pants. But in the past, I may have risked it.

I feel like I could use some thinking in this area, and to see what people thought.

What is your standard for leaving the house? Do you have defined rules? Do you feel like you are a good judge of "pass/don't pass" when it comes to your wardrobe?

(Different, by the way, from when an item is too old to even keep. An item that doesn't pass for leaving the house could be...ugly, wrong season, etc.)

(BTW, I kept the pants. I hung them with a long crochet vest on the same hanger, and now worn together they will look great.)
