All of this talk about the semi-tuck reminded me of the time that J. went around all day sporting an (unintentional) J Crew half tuck. When he finally realized what was going on, he chastised me for not telling him to fix it. Not because he didn't like the half tuck (although he probably wouldn't do it intentionally) but because it was the wrong side that was tucked in. Apparently it has to be the buttonhole side that is untucked. I honestly didn't know because I never sport it myself!

It goes both ways though--- I once chastized the SO for wearing shorts and flip flops. He is very hands on and outdoorsy, and we don't have HOT HOT summers. I thought it was weird that a man would wear something that he couldn't comfortably change a tire in and that slowed him down when walking in the grocery store (which he hates) when all of his other clothing choices are strictly functional (down to the colors he will wear). He has this attachment to black that has spread from functional parts of his life to non-functional parts, but don't tell the man that! Or that it isn't as flattering as he thinks it is. He doesn't look bad, but he has just light enough eyes and a tinge more pink in his skin than I do and would look much better in any other dark neutral. We also have gotten into disagreements about the proper length of men's pants. He relented after realizing non-highwaters were more comfortable. Plus, I have a poison eye for kakhis, polo shirts, and short sleeved button downs.

And I totally do it to girls too- I will often wonder why they are wearing something SO IMPRACTICAL. It blows my mine, but that is the guy side of me talking.

I am with Gillian and your sister's BF on this! While in theory I know scarves can be great in the heat, in practice I have never been able to stand them, so strapless plus scarf feels seasonally confused to me!

Mind you, that is a gorgeous scarf!

And the one instance I can imagine it: hot day outside. Going to air conditioned movie theatre or restaurant. Um....like your day with sis!!

As for Mr. Suz, his eye often takes a while to adjust. He had a hard time with skinny jeans at first, was confused by the semi-tuck, sometimes rejects certain patterns as "too much." But then usually starts to love them once he sees them in an actual outfit.

Interesting how often the semi-tuck comes up as a point of confusion for the menfolk!

Wow, Sound of Music on the big screen! Dreamy!

A conversation about semi-tucking -- just the conversation -- caused DH and I to have an argument. The only reason it didn't escalate into a full fight is because I backed down. I haven't brought it up since, and if I show him a WIW of one of you girls in a semi-tuck he starts to simmer again. So I don't show him. I'm a pacifist.

I think an outfit that makes anyone say, "can you do that?" is fashion in the making. Boldly go where no fabber has gone before.

I just listened to an interview that Terry Gross did with Mindy Kaling the other day (she is the creator of the sitcom "The Mindy Project", which was pretty funny, and also was on "The Office"). Here is an excerpt that discusses differences between men's and women's fashion sense:

GROSS: So you said that there were 15 things in fashion that girls like that guys hate. What are some of those 15?

KALING: I have found it to be true that men tend to not understand or like sequins very much.

Men don't like, sort of, the wedge shoe, I have noticed. Men don't like - tend to like the statement necklace or chunky tribal jewelry. These are the things, by the way, that I love, so the overlap in the Venn diagram of things that men hate for women to wear and the things that I love to wear, it's almost a full overlap on the Venn diagram, which is unfortunate for me.

What are other things? Capri pants I've noticed that men tend to dislike. This is not clothing, but I adore a short haircut. I don't know a single man, including my own brother and my own father, who if I cut my hair shorter than my shoulders, they think it's a huge tragedy.

KALING: Which is again too bad because I would live to have like a - that Audrey Hepburn short sort of hairstyle. Those are a few.

GROSS: Does the fact that your research shows that men don't like these things prevent you from wearing them?

KALING: No because I, like most women, I dress for other women, I think. If I was going to dress for men, I think in general I would be just wearing, like, a fitted black T-shirt and tight jeans every day. I mean, this is very - of course, this is my unscientific research by working with male comedy writers for the past eight years.

That's pretty funny. A similar thing happened to me the other day, when my SO felt he had to warn me before I left the house in shorts and ankle booties that it looked ridiculous. I think it was the concept that got him and not how it actually looked on me.

I gotta admit that I'm with your sister's boyfriend on that one! I won't wear a scarf unless it's cold enough for sleeves, and I won't wear sandals if it's cold enough for pants. I don't mind sundresses in cold weather when they're layered up, but I'm generally biased in favor of seasonal practicality!

Men can be confusing, especially the set that has no real interest in fashion, but are still opinionated.

My SO once told me he liked that I was a "plain dresser" -- I'm pretty sure he meant that he liked that I wasn't overly trendy, but that I have a lot of classic elements to my style. Right now in our area BF jeans and slouchy trousers haven't filtered down, but there is a lot of the oversized off the shoulder shirts worn with skinny jeans by the teens and 20 somethings and moms who raid their daughter's closets. He is not a fan of the look, probably because he finds it unpractical, and so far there has been a lot of teen incarnations of this look in our area. He has two sisters in their twenties who are girly girls and he often remarks about not appreciating them wearing revealing clothes, leggings as pants, insanely high heels, ect -- he finds it inappropriate and impractical, especially when worn places like a family backyard wedding.

He does not like it when I wear revealing tops, either.

However, he likes the BF look.

When I first met him I wore a lot of black, and he seems to think that my colors are dark colors. While he is kind of right, since I am a dark season, he still often eliminates anything bright from the color pallette when he buys me things. He will buy me the gray one over the pink one even if the pink one would have looked better with my complexion, because in his mind he doesn't see the pink "as me" --- in fact, I think it weirds him out when I wear the couple of bright, girly colored things I own. I also think part of it is that he is very similar in coloration to me, but a little more muted and tends to pick colors that he likes to wear, which are mostly dark and muted.

His own clothing is another battle altogether. He has a lot of bad clothes from a former relationship, and when I met him he was mainly wearing black tshirts and clothes from high school that were more than a decade old. Since then he has replaced most of his things, but he has a lot of challenges in dressing and he really needs some replacement tshirts, sneakers, and button downs atm.

He is all about the practical when it comes to both him and me, and yet he often tells me he wishes I would dress up more and things I need to go shopping more so I have nice stuff to help me feel good about myself.

I don't think I've every worn anything that my partner doesn't understand, but there are a few items that I've noticed he does not love, which include:

- wedge sandals (any wedge footwear, actually)
- animal print
- boring pumps
- anything with lace on it
- anything that looks like it's made out of grandma's curtains

Luckily our tastes mostly intersect. I mean, hear hear, just say no to doilies and curtains! (Mind you, at least I understand that these things can be effectively incorporated into outfits by those who enjoy them and can do it right). But I do wear boring high heels sometimes and feel fab in them. And my wedge sandals were, I thought, cute and practical, although they just died this summer.

Not sure how he feels about harem pants or Chewbacca vests, since I've never tried wearing either.

I think men generally like clothes that flatter the female body, above anything. They do not seem to care for other styles or trends if they do not comply with the feminine/flattering rule.

I'm always amused by the discord between "girl pretty" and "guy pretty." Mine gets confounded by "belts that don't *do* anything" - like when I wear a narrow belt over a tee shirt to build definition. He's almost as confused by layers - "why not just wear one big sweater, instead of all those shirts over each other?"

eh eh I can relate to that!
Men are very practical, they don't understand some choices, it's not about warmth but style eh eh
I have so many: boyfriend jeans, voluminous dresses, patterns, oxford shoes

Gaylene, hahaha that's so funny! I totally get why he thought so.

I straightened my hair once, but my husband was so disturbed by it that I had to go and wash it out - I guess he likes me as I am More generally, he dislikes chunky shoes on women, or very tall, strappy ones (several straps/laces across the foot combined with high heels). He also dislikes unstructured dresses.

I'm guess I'm lucky I found a husband who seems pretty tolerant of almost anything I'd choose to wear, but he has voiced his bewilderment at some of the items sported by my friends.

One of the funniest incidents was when we had our close friends over for dinner recently. On the night of their visit, my very petite friend was carrying her new, very expensive, and very large, designer handbag that she had fallen in love with, and purchased, on her recent trip to New York. The next thing I knew, my husband cornered me in the kitchen, and asked, in a hushed voice, if my friend and her husband were having problems. When I told him I thought everything was fine, he then looked puzzled and asked why she was going to spend the night with us.

My husband does not get ankle boots. He's sweet and polite, but I know him well enough to read his face: "pick a shoe, pick a boot, go with one or the other and be done." He vastly prefers knee high boots with a heel and tells me they're fetching when I wear them. :)

But to be fair, he'll be the first to admit he doesn't understand women's shoes lately and he says he finds them really unattractive and confusing... ah well.

And the Sound of Music remains one of my all time favorite movies!

Ha! I've never even TRIED a semituck because I think my DH would go around reminding me to tuck in my shirt ALL DAY. His dad was in the navy and it's really too much to expect him to be able to handle that kind of insanity.

DH really dislikes Capri pants, especially the wide ones that are stumpifying. He also doesn't understand why women wear really high heels.

Lol with Anna! My hubby doesn't get the baggy slouchy pants - says they look like sweatpants, just in nicer fabric. Well - he's right. They do. But he's against it

LOL! I live in the land of harem pants and believe me they are often worn by religious married women with 5+ kids. Everything is relative! My DH does not understand shoes at all. Can you imagine?
