Kari, thanks for article. It's sad and disappointing.

FWIW, in most South African cultures - (I lived in South Africa for 17 years and go back often so this is current thinking) - it's exquisite and celebrated to be a plus sized woman. A sign of wealth, beauty and status.

This phenomenon has a cultural aspect for sure. I used to run a teen therapy group whose members were largely African American (I'm white). If the kids called you "skinny" it was a dismissive insult, suggesting that you were somewhat inconsequential.

Thanks for sharing this, Kari. Food for thought, indeed.

We all have a responsibility for how we treat other people, and we need to be aware that our own attitudes can be "contaminating." Parents and teachers should be especially aware that children easily adopt their attitudes to body issues. However, we all to some degree influence our friends, family members, colleagues, other customers, other passengers, and other people around us. (How I wish that someone who heard that man's rude comment to the lady walking by would have spoken up!)

Each of us has to start with ourselves and analyse our own attitudes to other people--and to their body size, skin colour, sex and age--and the signals we send. And sometimes we absolutely need to pause and think: "What if I myself were ...? How would I like to be treated?" As always, the Golden Rule, 'All things that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them' (Matthew 7:12), is the best advice.

I'm so sorry your friend experienced that, too, particularly in those circumstances.

This post has got me reflecting that it's easy for me to call out size prejudice when I see other people on the receiving end of it, but difficult for me to move past the messages I've internalised in relation to my own body. Food for thought, definitely.

Thank you for sharing, Kari. I am with those who say it is disappointing and appalling, but sadly not shocking or surprising. The fear/hate of fatness is widespread and insidious.

A long time ago, my mother (who has a lot of body image issues, which sadly have been passed on to me) commented that her friend who was undergoing chemo 'looked great' because 'she's lost so much weight'. I've never forgotten that one.

I am appalled but not shocked by the comments mentioned on this thread and in the article you posted Kari. Human beings have such a deep need to categorize, stigmatize, and separate. I don't even know where to begin to talk about it, but exposure of the issues definitely helps. Thanks Kari!

You know, people do couch it as a moral failing, and that’s ridiculous. It’s egregious. And it’s the same as rainbow-water-will-cure-your-cancer: harmful in a myriad of ways. What worries me about my experiences is that if you are actually big and someone directs these thoughts at you... well, I feel that can mask how insane and dangerous that other person is. I get very scared thinking about the fat bias in our culture...

... ok. Sorry. I touched my own nerve...

Really disappointing but not surprising to hear about these sorts of ignorant people sticking their nose in. But after reading a thread on Fox today I am not surprised as there sure are some $&@)&&#% out there! ( I check Fox occasionally to make sure I am not in a bubble. It sure pops the bubble).

I try not to comment on weight at all to anyone. My own, theirs or anyone in the public eye. Whether they have gained or lost. I fail on myself occasionally but as a policy it mostly works.

Rachy, I’m appalled for you. Wow.

I think the difference with ordinary rude comments about folks’ bodies is that fatness is looked as a moral failing. I see so many comments on public articles folks I follow on Facebook that indicate they do not deserve to live, or to receive health care, or a place to sit down, or any food at all, due to their size. I have experienced and heard others experience going into the doctor for something like a respiratory infection after a cold or mental health care and the only thing the physician wants to talk about is your weight. I had a doctor suggest I stop wearing knit clothes or clothes with stretch fabric so I’d be more aware and take care of the problem. I’ve had comments from random passers by. I’ve had some nasty comments made to me recently in my running groups implying that I’m dishonest about my body and my nutrition (for example: when discussing how I actually got BIGGER, not smaller, when I trained for a tough endurance event.) It gets so old. I’m lucky that I don’t experience it daily.

Thanks for listening and taking this seriously. Fashion is the tip of the iceberg but it’s very much related to a culture where fat folks are expected to stop existing or going out in public.

It is not ok to give people unrequested advice about their bodies yet this happens.
In a previous workplace managers were trained to never comment about employees’ appearance as that could be viewed as harassment. @Rachy’s boss could have used that type of training at the time.
Your share is a very good read to highlight what goes on with weight shaming. That is what I was referring to in your previous post about fashion sizing. Attitudes need to change and there needs to be better advocacy.

I have to tell you something about how deep the bias against ‘fat’ runs: I wear a size 4. I am mixed race, tho I look Asian to Westerners. I CANNOT get smaller...

...and I had a DOCTOR tell me to lose weight because I was ‘too fat for an Asian.’ And she (theoretically) knew I wasn’t 100% Asian too.

It really is amazing that complete strangers think it is OK to comment on someone's weight, regardless of which end of the spectrum the victim is on (underweight people are also subjected to such harrassment, though maybe not as much).

The number crunching was very interesting. It's no wonder finding something that fits AND that you actually like is like finding a needle in a haystack when you wear extended sizes.

Kari - thanks for highlighting this article. A member of my family suffered this prejudice too and I was appalled at how complete strangers would take it upon themselves to offer suggestions on how to lose weight. I don't know, maybe in their mind it was being helpful - well it was not. Hurtful, demoralising and cruel are the words that come to mind. It takes about 10 acts of kindness and compliments to undo one mean look or stare.

I like how the author confronted the man, that took amazing courage. We all have to make a stand on these issues. It is always easier if a bystander stands up to the bully rather than the victim because it says as a society this is not what we tolerate or accept.

“Even now, access to clothing remains needlessly challenging. According to one retail analytics firm, retailers offer 2.3% as many clothing options for plus size people as they do for straight sizes. If you wear a size 14 or under, you have over 43 times as many clothing options as I do. And that doesn’t even account for the sharp dropoff of clothing available above a size 24, much less above a size 32.”

“But that struggle doesn’t end with clothing. More than clothing, I need to unearth the attitudes that deem my body worthy of such naked revulsion. I need to uproot the bias that so reliably pushes fat people to the margins. The attitudes that leave just 15% of employers willing to even consider hiring a plus size woman. The attitudes that lead fat people to receive staggeringly poor health care. And yes, the attitudes that lead strangers, family and friends to comment on my body with startling regularity.”
