Having served as an adjunct for over a decade, I so get this. It was not your call -- adjuncts rarely have any say over course load. Stay positive and be a good colleague, and do what you love!

I agree with the others, just let it go. It sounds like a win-win solution: you get to do something you're great at, which benefits the students, and the other faculty member can focus on what she's good at by having a lighter teaching load. Perfect! The fact that you were concerned shows you are a sensitive, ethical person.

Agree--least said, soonest mended. There is no way you can make it better for your colleague. But do appreciate and enjoy your department's vote of confidence!

Adding my "let it go" reinforcement to MsMary and Thistle's advice. This kind of situation actually happens quite often in academic environments since no one "owns" a course--despite what a person may think.

Good advice above. I think that person doing the hiring created some of this discomfort by making that comment, that was a bit unprofessional IMHO because it was guaranteed to make you feel uncomfortable.
If the other person is full-time/salaried, you are actually lightening their workload. I realize academia can be different and some people are insecure and territorial, but where I work people are happy to offload responsibilities because they are usually overworked. If her income or security are affected in some way, that's a little different obviously. But you're already sensitive to the situation so that will go a long way in your interactions without discussing it openly which I agree would be a mistake.

You ladies are the best. Thank you! I've spent so much of my career in unconventional work environments that I feel I have a lack of context and experience to gracefully navigate these types of situations.

What Mary said. I'd just let it go. Saying anything will only be uncomfortable. It's the college's job to deal with any perceived performance issues, not yours.

Just let it go. Be professional and friendly but there's no need to be uncomfortable or make it personal. I can only think raising the issue would increase her discomfort, if any.

And congratulations!

Ladies, will you please offer your perspective on how to handle an awkward situation?

I was hired to teach a course at a local college but the course was cancelled when it did not reach minimum numbers for enrollment. The person doing the hiring told me she might be able to "move things around." Turns out this meant she told the other instructor that she was giving the other course section to me. She told me the other person just doesn't have a spark or vision and they feel more comfortable with me in the role.

So while I am flattered they went to the effort to keep me, I feel very awkward. If you were in my shoes, would you bring up the subject with the other professor (admit you feel uncomfortable, etc.) and what would you say, or would you just let it go?

*I should mention this person still has all of her other courses and responsibilities. I'm not technically threatening her job, but I bet it feels that way to her.

Help!
