I empathize with dress fit problems. Hardly ever does a dress fit both top and bottom. Then there is length and if I can contort enough to zip it up. No wonder older ladies of my acquaintance when I was young wore mumu style dresses.

Angie, you are completely right about the sizing, especially in tailored garments. I did not get the black dress yet, and it wouldn't be for the interview. I plan to wear a suit at the interview, and if I get the position, I would get the dress to wear to work. It would be fun if we both end up getting the dress, another twin item!

Yes, my SA put a bunch of random things in my dressing room too, I think it is a company policy. I am glad the jersey dress worked out for you, I am curious about it as well. Looking forward to seeing it on you!
I saw those blush cargo pants, they were pretty cute! I admit that I wasn't quite sure about the juxtaposition of the style and color - it would be either amazing or very bad.

It was odd, to say the least. The SA put a white blouse in the fitting room (you know how they do that?), and when I looked at the tag, I laughed at the 4. But when I tried it on, sure enough, it was still plenty roomy! You've seen me, you know I am not a 4 in typical sizing!

They did have a cute pair of cargo pants that fit me well, but so far in the season they've only made them available in blush -- the SA said they should have other colors available later, so I may need to check back. Definitely a few interesting things, considering it's a store I rarely even enter.

I did buy that drapey dress, but I want to consider it more when I get back home from TX. I like it but I'm not sure if I love it.

Thank you very much for making me feel better, ladies. Sizes are indeed all over the place these days, and tailored dresses with no stretch are the hardest item for me to fit.

Suz, you should still try this dress if possible, you never know, it might work for you.

Smittie, small waist is indeed a good thing, but it causes fit issues in tailored non-stretchy items. Good luck with the black&white midi!

JAileen, sadly, alterations are not possible - the construction at waist is very complicated and the material very delicate.

Rachy, that is impressive that you has dresses completely reconstructed. I am sure that the resulting dress fit you perfectly!

Colette, sorry the jersey dress did not work out for you - this store did not have it, otherwise I would have tried that one too. They do have lots of interesting tops, but sizing is every random so you have to try everything on very carefully.

Alliona, I do not think a waist broach would help much, and it would certainly ruin the material You are right, stretchy or jersey dresses are often the only surely to fit type of dresses. Thank you for the interview wishes!

Janet, you sizing experience at WHBM is quite ridiculous, even worse that mine. I am speechless.

Diane, you are awfully sweet, thank you! I am sure you could have done the alteration, but sadly we live on different continents. I do not trust any of the local tailors that much. Plus, I don't really need the dress for any occasion, I just really, really like it.

Oh what a shame! It's such a pity we don't leave near each other(or even in the same country) I know it sounds like I'm tooting my own horn, but having worked on alterations on countless dressy dresses, wedding dresses and ball gowns over many years, I've yet to find a dress I couldn't find a way of altering. even those with tricky pleated overlays. I bet I could have done it for you.

Bummer! That is such a pretty dress and it looks perfect for you from the stock photo. You can never tell. I popped into WHBM a few days ago to check out that black jersey dress, and their sizing is ALL over the place. One top I needed in a 4, and one pair of jeans were ok in an 8, while another was tight in a 10. One dress would have worked on me in a L, and in another I almost could have worn an XS. How can one person need everything from a 4 to a 12 in one single designer's store??

Oh, Tanya, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I loved that dress when Angie posted it and was hoping someone would snap it up so I could appreciate it IRL. It'd be fab for your ballroom dancing. Is there a way you could "adjust" the waist with a strategically placed brooch? It sounds like we have the same upper body measurements, and I have sometimes resorted to that tactic when there's lots of drape or pleating at the waist. Of course, a brooch may not be practical for delicate chiffon and dancing--and you don't want to injure a partner if it pops open mid movement ;)

I have only once bought a dress that didn't require alterations, and that was a knit dress back in the days of bodycon. Dresses are hard.

Good luck with the interview next month!

Disappointing, true, but one out of two in a dress try-on session is a pretty good average. Also, a tiny waist really isn't such a bad thing :)

I was running a bunch of errands this evening after work and I found myself near a local WHBM store. I decided to check out some lovelies from Angie's dress roundup. I was especially interested in the halter chiffon dress that I fell in love with when I saw it in the post. Moreover, Angie stated that it is "a pretty halter neck for those with long necks, small bust lines, and a defined waist". That is exactly my body type, so I thought the dress should fit perfectly, right? Actually, it was very wrong :( The dress is stunning and does not fit me at all - I needed size 2 to fit my chest area and size 00 to fit my waist. Sigh.. . I am not busty at all, actually, quite the opposite (30D), so I really do not get this. The dress has intricate pleating/ruching at the waist with multiple layers of very delicate chiffon so waist alterations are not possible. This has reminded me of all the similar fit issues I have had in the past before fluid and slouchy became fashionable. Miracles like my recent H&M dress are rare.

I also tried the bateau fit-and-flare dress which is every bit as gorgeous as Angie says. Surprisingly, it fit perfectly everywhere in size 0! I do not need such a dress now. However, I will be interviewing next month for an internship-like position in an science administration office this summer. Since the office has a business casual dress code, I plan to reward myself with this dress if (which is very unlikely) I get the position.

Consolation prize: navy asymmetric tunic from Formula: Tunic, Skinnies, Short Topper & Heels blog post. I have been thinking about it since that blog post, and I spied it on super-deep discount, so it came home with me.

(No photos this time, sorry, I was too depressed with the halter dress experience).
