The physical therapist sent me for Superfeet after my foot/tendon injury last year. I do not have pain when I wear them. I have the full size cut for pointed toed shoes, a full one cut for rounded toed shoes and the half size for shoes that are too tight in the toe area for the full size.

Faith, thanks for the info on the Pedag products. I had a Holiday insole in some heeled boots, and boy was it great! Then I saw they had replaced it with the Viva Mini, so I ordered that for a pair of booties. It was nothing to write home about, but I thought it just had something to do with me or the shoe or something. I'm glad to see that others have not been as happy with the Viva Mini as with the Holiday and that the Holiday is being sold again!

I use or have used so many different pads and insoles--it's hard to remember them all. For flat closed shoes I often use Superfeet Berries. I just consider them to be a part of the price of the shoe. I also use the Foot Petals and Dr. Scholl's or drugstore air cushions, a heel pad for slightly shorter left leg, and I fiddle with other pads that I've accumulated over the years.

The podiatrist recommends the Superfeet.

Funny story--I went into a comfort shoe store to buy the first pair of Superfeet. The salesman told me how great they were, but what a pain to get into his shoes--he said it took him 5 minutes each morning to stuff them into his shoes.

So I go home and read the instructions: You trim them to fit the shoe! Apparently he didn't do that. You are supposed to make them about 1/8" shorter than the actual shoe bed.

Do you mean just for padding or for orthotic purposes (arch support, etc)? I use both, often together. For padding I like the cheap white foam ones from the drugstore. You have to replace them often but they are soft and don't make your feet sweaty. I find the gel ones hot and they are often oddly textured.

For orthotics I use either powerstep 3/4 or superfeet black 3/4 in most of my shoes. For sneakers and some roomy boots I use full length powersteps. These are all rigid and quite durable, I switch them between shoes and replace about once a year. Dr scholls type are useless, if you want real support you need rigid insoles. I buy them online but a good place to shop and try them is a running shop.

ETA: The powersteps are more supportive but bulkier. I use the superfeet in my slimmer shoes. I like the 3/4 length for both because they don't cramp the toes as much. I actually find they tend to make my shoes fit better because they take up some of the excess room in the instep! (Low volume feet here.) You might have to size up if you have higher volume feet and want to use orthotics.

I also put summersoles in some of my sandals. They are not padded but have a soft texture and cover up annoying stitching (I love born shoes but find their "signature" footbed stitching so irritating- literally, as it gives me blisters).

For most shoes I just use the cheapo drugstore ones, but this past winter I put Superfeet insoles (from Nordstrom) in my boots, and they were the greatest!

For heels: Stiletto Hardware Ultra Slender Ball of Foot cushions. Or regular (i.e. non-slender) but those are thicker and take up more room.

For bunion area: Dr Scholls Party Feet gel spots. Have to be ordered from the UK for some reason but worth getting.

For everything else: the cheapest, thinnest foam ones that you have to cut.

For heavily used shoes, I use Superfeet insoles, and add heel wedges (that's specifically for my knee issues).

For high heels, I use FootPetals to keep the foot from slipping.

I like the thin arch support insoles by Pedag -- they have the lowest profile of any I've seen. They come in (Euro) sizes, and aren't cheap, but can be moved about from one pair of shoes to another. I usually have at least 2 in rotation per season, and they last me about a year. I tend to favor the model called "Viva," which comes in insulated wool and terrycloth versions for winter and summer. I've also used their plain terry cloth inserts when I felt I didn't need the support, and if I don't have room for a full length insole, I go with the 1/2 length leather "Holiday" arch support. The latter seemed to be discontinued briefly in favor of a newer model ("viva mini," which didn't suit my foot--a bit longer, wider, and generally bulkier), but are now readily available on Amazon again. They also make various squishier ones, but those are usually too bulky for my shoes. I've also tried their stick-on version for sandals, but found the built-up padding under the metatarsal to be too much for me, I could never get it positioned quite right.

If I use a whole insole, it's one of those floppy stick on things, but I use those on shoes that I prefer to wear without footies. The insole keeps things from getting squishy. The more important insoles for me are the heel insert and the 1/2 sole. My ankles must be really low, because so many shoes rub against them painfully. A Dr Scholl's gel heel insole raises my ankles enough that there's no more rubbing. They do not stick to the shoe, so I just move them to whatever shoe needs them that day. The 1/2 sole I only use in my flat as a pancake shoes to give just enough arch support to make them comfortable. I also use the Dr Scholl's here. There are plenty of fancy ones, but I just haven't needed them.

I'm realizing more and more that it's okay to use an insole to help a shoe fit better. But I've tried so many different kinds, slim stick ons for the ball and heel, whole insoles that are hard to cut and fit to the shoe etc.

Do you have a go to for this purpose? Thanks.
