This post is super helpful to read.
Although I consider myself a makeup hoarder/guru, I don't wear foundation. When I want some coverage, I wear Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer but I have to say that it is almost the same as wearing nothing at all--definitely doesn't give you much coverage if you are looking to even out your skin.
My nose tends to get red, so I use one of Benefit's stick foundations and just use it as spot coverage in those areas--it is a heavier coverage product but I use it sparingly. I'm with Sammi--rather than putting on foundation uniformly, I prefer to strategically target my problem areas with thicker product, letting other areas (like my freckles) shine through.

More recently, I've had two professional make-up appts as trial runs for my wedding make up. One woman used a Nars foundation and the other used Shu Uemura. In both instances, I was very unhappy with how the foundation settled into my pores, highlighting them instead of disguising and, within an hour of wear, also made my skin look MORE uneven and rather pasty. Almost like I had severely uneven skin underneath that was shining through--I think it was my freckles, in hindsight, but up close it looked BAD. So I can't recommend those brands, but I do think foundation is a REALLY personal thing that depends on your coloring, skin type, and tolerance for make up. Many Asian and African American women swear my MAC's studio fix, but it's not for everyone.
My dermatologist loves Jane Iredale so I think that's a great endorsement and I plan to look into her line for my wedding.

One last note: if you do go with a fuller coverage foundation, I would invest in a good brush or sponge for application and blending--it really does make a difference.

Another vote for mineral makeup. My favorite brands are Jane Iredale and Mychelle. I've tried their liquid and cream stick foundations in the past with good results

I was also looking for more coverage than my tinted moisturizer provided a while back. I found I was actually happiest with a full coverage concealer just where I need it to even out my skin tone and powder to set. It looks natural and I like how it lets my freckles and "good" skin show

See my post (above) in this thread about my severe reaction to bismuth. Jane Iredale mineral makeup no longer contains this irritating ingredient. There are other mineral makeup brands that don't have it. You have to check the list of ingredients to make sure. A lot of mineral makeup (esp. the stuff sold at your local drug store) does contain bismuth.

I want to give a shout out to my favorite product ever - Make-Up Forever HD Microfinish powder. It has basically two effects - it changes my skin from looking greasy to looking dewy, and it softens fine lines, pores, hairs, etc. Also, it's translucent, so makeup morons like me don't need to get the color right. Actually all the MUFE stuff I've bought has been great.

Scarlet - if you decide to try mineral foundation try wearing it for a few hours before you buy. I had to throw mine out because it made my skin unbearably itchy. I'm told that some people are allergic/sensitive to bismuth, which is in a lot of mineral makeup.

Everybody's skin is different, so I can only speak for myself, but I think mineral makeup is the best thing since sliced bread. I use foundation to even out my skin, so I don't need much coverage. The mineral makeup eliminates the need for sunscreen (yes, I've used it at the beach and can attest that it works), powder, and concealer. Even though the foundation makeup is pricey, it's the only product I have to use besides my blush, eyeliner and mascara.

I will say, however, that mineral makeup doesn't adhere well to my skin unless I use moisturizer underneath (as a first layer). I use a very lightweight lotion by Free & Clear, which does not make my skin oily or break me out.

Lastly, let me add that you can make your own tinted moisturizer by mixing a little bit of mineral makeup with your moisturizer. I've done it before, and it works great.

There are various brands of mineral makeup on the market. Bare Minerals and Jane Iredale are 2 of them.

Thanks so much for these detailed responses! Maybe I also need to improve my technique. If I use concealer over my current foundation it looks perfect for about five minutes. I guess primer and/or powder on top of everything else just seems so time-consuming. I am really impressed by how popular the mineral foundations are. I have never tried one.

Isabel - I think "sheer" is a relative term. Nars calls it's foundations Sheer (they make a Matte and a Glow version) but really it is a medium coverage, basic foundation although highly blendable.

I have oily skin as well. Do you use a primer or mattifier under the foundation? That helps me since I don't really use moisturizer (I do use a mattifying moisturizer for spf and primer - Clean and Clear finishes) and occasionally a spray to sela things. I like Urban Decay De-Slick setting spray. Oh, and powder but lightly.

I actually think I am better off with less makeup. I tried the Revlon Photoready but it was too heavy for me. My makeup lasts better with a light foundation or tinted moisturizer and then concealer and powder to set it.

Another vote for Bare Minerals. It's the only foundation I've ever been able to wear. I've always worn just a tinted moisturizer, but as I've gotten older I've developed some redness and enlarged pores on my cheeks and around my nose. Bare Minerals makes my skin look flawless, yet still allows my freckles (which I like) to show through. It's like I'm not wearing any make-up - I just have perfect skin. Amazing stuff.

Yes Janet - I figured this out just recently myself. Couldn't figure out why some of these foundations I loved just weren't lasting all that long. They seemed to slide off. I've recently come to the conclusion that I might have *oily* skin, or at the very least, combination skin.

Meanwhile, just wanted to add that my stepdaughter tried the Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals, and *loved* it. She had acne prone skin, and between some retin-A from the doctor's office and using the Bare Minerals - her skin cleared right up and looked flawless.

Huh, I tried Makeup Forever HD and it seemed too heavy on my skin. I can't believe at the age of almost 47 I have to use oil-free foundation to keep from breaking out uncontrollably. I've been sticking with Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and I like it. I'm curious about Bare Minerals but have never tried it.

For me and my super sensitive rosaea-prone skin, Jane Iredale is great because it does not contain bismuth oxychloride (BI), an ingredient that is present in a lot of mineral makeup brands. I found out the hard way that this ingredient irritates my skin. As a matter of fact, I discovered it when wearing Jane Iredale years ago, before they changed their formula and removed BI from their makeup.

After the bout with BI, I wore Aromaleigh mineral makeup for a long time (until they went out of business) and then went back to Jane Iredale when I found out about the formula change.

So what happened to my skin? Well, it started itching and skin started flaking off my face. My skin then started burning, and I couldn't even use the gentlest skin cleanser to wash my face. I had to go to the dermatologist to clear it up, and then I had to switch makeup.

I really feel that the mineral makeup is beneficial to my skin, and I love not having to touch up my makeup during the day.

I also wear Jane Iredale pressed powder blush. Great stuff!

Yes, it's expensive, but it lasts so long. I wear inexpensive Covergirl eyeliner and mascara, and my cleansers and topical Rx medications (for rosacea) are not expensive, so it's not like I'm spending a fortune.

Oh, and I look so much better in photos. The mineral makeup does not look chalky or cakey or whatever. It just looks like my skin but better.

Another vote for Jane Iredale. It's kind of expensive, but it is really wonderful - almost seems to be beneficial for skin. The one I like is the pressed base, as opposed to the loose powder.

https://janeiredale.com/us/en/.....spf-20.htm

I also like:

Makeup Forever HD Foundation:

http://www.makeupforever.com/p.....6MoS9XLnfI

Lancôme 'Photôgenic Lumessence' Light Mastering & Line Smoothing Makeup:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/la.....ltback=945

The why?

Jane Iredale - best mineral makeup I've tried, and it really makes your skin feel good, while also giving excellent coverage that does NOT settle into lines, does not seem to accentuate flaws like some other types of mineral makeup. Easy touch-ups (though rarely necessary) on the go - the compact is lovely and it's easy to carry the compact and brush in your purse. High quality ingredients. My skin loves this stuff. Way better than Bare Minerals, Bare Escentuals, various other brands of mineral makeup I've tried. Knocks every other mineral makeup out of the park. It's very expensive though. On balance, I think it's worth the cost.

MUFE HD Foundation - I was researching "best makeup for photography" one day, for a family member who was getting married, and this was highly recommended. I bought some, and I swear - it's the most natural, glowy-est, stunning-looking effect I've ever seen. Does not look make-up-y at all in photographs. It's kind of a medium-ish coverage, and in terms of long-haul staying power (say, traveling all day long) it doesn't last quite as long as I'd like, but I think this is true of most foundation makeup.

Estee Lauder Double Wear - very good coverage, good for the long haul - does not come off until you take it off - excellent for super-long days or in hot weather. That said, it is a bit heavy-ish, and more appropriate for evening, and/or those extremely long and busy days. Recommended for hot weather, recommended for sheer staying power, even in the worst humidity and high temperatures.

Lancome Photogenic Lumessence - beautiful finish - a lit-from-within look. Incredible stuff, and it really does seem to smooth out or sort of 'gloss over' any lines you might be worried about. Light to medium coverage. This makeup looks like you have mixed in some beautiful highlighters or some sort of 'secret' glow-enhancing ingredient, somehow. Very, very pretty. Not the longest-lasting, but so beautiful.

Right now, I have the Jane Iredale, the MUFE HD foundation and the EL Double Wear. They all serve different purposes. I know this seems ridiculous, but my skin is 'fussy' - sometimes it's oily-ish, sometimes I'm traveling a lot, sometimes I need more or less coverage, depending on the situation and depending on my skin. I miss having the Lancome Photogenic Lumessence on hand, and will probably order more in the fall when staying power and oily-ness isn't as much of an issue as it is when we're heading into the summer months.

Without knowing about what kind of coverage and/or staying power you might be looking for or what your skin is like - I would recommend trying the Makeup Forever HD foundation and/or the Lancome Photogenic Lumessence - both are spectacularly beautiful, not too 'heavy' and look very pretty on the skin. If you were interested in mineral makeup - I'd head right on over to the nearest salon or store that sells Jane Iredale. It's *way* better (imo) than Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals. Absurdly expensive, but the PurePressed base will last a really long time, and does not look all powdery. A much better level of coverage and just seems a lot nicer on skin than the other mineral makeup brands I've tried.

Want serious coverage and all-day staying power? Try Estee Lauder Double Wear. Covers everything, and does not come off until you take it off.

Ok - I think this is long enough...:)

I like mineral makeup for my tends to be shiny and quite uneven skin. I also rely on MAC blot powder for shine removal.

I have two favorites that serve two very different purposes. My every day foundation is L'Oreal 's Truel Match super blendable make up. It is super blendable, has sunscreen, comes in millions of shades and looks very natural. For special occasions I use Armani's Luminous Silk, that has more of satin-y finish. It is very pricey, but it lasts me forever.

When they discontinued my favorite Clinique shade and I could not be matched (really) I floundered for years until I found Bare Minerals. I have not looked back. I am a Fairly light and in the summer I mix in a bit of light to up the tone a bit and it works. I have started experimenting with some tinted moisturizers, but haven't chosen a winner yet (I'm trying Clinique Moisture sheer tint and Cityblock protector )

Nars Sheer Glow - amazing shades, and the swatches on KarlaSugar's blog helped me choose shades without trying in person! Lovely finish that is between matte and glowy. Liquid, which I find easy to work with. Doesn't break me out.

Vincent Longo Water Canvas Creme to Powder Foundation was my favourite for that no-makeup-I-just-naturally-have-perfect-skin look. It was my Holy Grail. Unfortunately I can't get it anymore. I love the way it was easy to apply, went on with a cool feeling, stayed put (much more so than most foundations) and basically made people think I was one of those people who look amazing without makeup heheh...

Like Kelly, I have a hard time matching my skintone - probably worse since I'm mixed. I started using a Korean product called Baviphat Magic Girls BB cream. I don't know about pigmentation, but it really helps even out my texture.

I've also liked ELF mineral foundation when I am too tan for Korea, lol. You can mix the loose powder to get a good color, and I feel nicely evened out. I would also use the concealer on top of the foundation and blend, and it worked really well.

I have multiple favorites depending on state of skin and events of the day.

Two I really like that are a step up from my norm of tinted moisturizer are Covergirl Natureluxe and Lancome Teint Idole (which lasts forever).

I also have used MakeupForever HD and liked it a lot.

For major coverage, I use Covergirl Aquasmooth. I used to use a Shu Uemura expensive version of this one until by chance realized they were nearly identical. Takes more blending for a full coverage foundation but can look airbrushed.

Sometimes I just use my TM and then take a good color match concealer and blend it out over high pigmentation or spots where i need more coverage. That way I avoid the "too much makeup" look.

I just started using foundation about a year ago - a few discolorations coming on with age. I tried several but most were too greasy, too cakey, too phoney, too white, too stinky, made me break out, made me itch yada yada yada...so my family doc suggested I try Bare MInerals and voila - a match made in heaven! My skin LOVES it, it stays put all day (even when I work out at lunch time), colour match is perfect and it's not expensive.
