What a great question ! Thank you for posting it.

Kari, what an awesome post. I didn't know that you had a website, DUH.

I just figured out one year ago what I needed and worked for me. I need about 40 pieces of clothing and 4 shoes for Fall/Winter. This doesn't include outerwear - but it would get me through everything including holidays.

This would include :

jeans : straight, skinny and boyfriend
palazzo pants in black
black ponte knit pants
black skirt
1 dress in navy, black or grey
two cashmere v neck sweaters
two merino wool lightweight t shirts
blazers in navy, black and one fun color

I would need on heavy duty pair of winter boots, one short boot, one long boot and one pair of black pumps.

For Summer I could definitely be fine with 1 pair of linen pants and 10 dresses, a couple of pairs of sandals, sneakers.

Spring is relatively short here, so 15 pieces would be fine.

About 100. This includes dresses, tops, toppers, bottoms, coats, footwear, and bags. It doesn't include things for exercise, sleep, or the things I wear for gardening or housecleaning.

I need a four-season wardrobe which covers casual wear, business casual for work, more dressy things for church, and still more dressy things for playing for weddings, funerals, and concerts.

100 seems my optimal number to have enough variety that I'm not bored, and yet not so many things that they don't get much wear.

I just read your post again and see you were asking about a minimum number. If I needed to, I could tighten this up for one year. Assuming I still had the same lifestyle needs, I could probably manage without 1/4 to
1/3 less, but I'd be repeating a lot and would get bored.

MovingFashionForward - so, when I moved last fall, I tightly rolled all of my clothing (around 150 pieces) and somehow fit it into one 21" carry-on and one 26" suitcase. And a weekend bag full of shoes. I was shocked at how little space you can take up, when it's necessary!

Such fascinating replies! It is so interesting to see the differences between what different individuals consider essential. In posts about capsule wardrobes/all-season lean wardrobes people often appear to consider only 2 or 3 dresses sufficient, whereas when I asked my sister the above question, she had a whole list of different sorts of dresses adding up to 18... (which seems reasonable to me!) but only 2 pairs of jeans and zero pairs of any other kind of trousers. I have dramatically (seriously dramatically!) cut down my wardrobe but despite not even liking jeans very much, I can't quite think how I could manage with fewer than 5 pairs.

Elly, I so admire your list. I think you have just inspired me to keep a record of everything I wear in the next year, for fun.

Rachylou, I am so with you on variety being needed for a very varied life. Mine is similarly varied so I too can't imagine managing with a super tiny wardrobe. I also like to dress differently depending on my mood. Perhaps I'm still at the childhood dressing up stage! But part of it is also different needs for different countries, climates, cultures etc. (I'm good at coming up with justifications!)

I mentioned the one-in-one-out rule in order to allow for some turnover over the course of the year, because, well, if one is interested in fashion there is bound to be *something* one wants to buy here or there in the course of the year. The question is not 'what would you need if you could never buy anything again?', but more of a general question about the number of items you could live with as a comfortable (not bored) minimum. I fear mine is still at the top end -- I'd guess nearer 200 than 100 -- but I haven't actually established my minimum yet. I will let you know when I have. Who knows, perhaps it might be fewer items than I am guessing!

Anne, to answer your question, avoiding boredom is very important to me. I really enjoy putting outfits together and generally having fun with fashion, and I tend to wear layered looks unless I'm wearing a particularly interesting (to me) dress, so the number of items seems to add up rather.

I think if I were going to Vienna for a year (how wonderful!) I would make a serious effort to cut down to 100 items. In fact, when I think about it in that way -- if it were a trip -- my preference for extremely minimal packing comes out and it suddenly seems like a good idea to limit myself to one large suitcase and one 20" hand luggage case. I wonder how many items one could fit in those? Probably fewer than 100, I should think. One friend of mine is so obsessively minimal that he prefers not to own more ANYTHING than he can fit in one large suitcase plus hand luggage -- not just clothes! I've always admired his austerity... from a distance! Almost every item of clothing he owns is designer though. Thinking about him and his strictly limited but high quality wardrobe has been quite inspiring when it comes to deciding what to donate.

I have been thinking a lot about this as we may be going to Vienna for a year (sabbatical for my husband). I'm guessing around 100 pieces of clothing, including workout and lounge wear and maybe 10 pair of shoes? 3 or 4 pieces of outerwear, and lots of scarves and jewelry.

I was thinking how actually a smaller closet may involve more spending and wastage than a larger one. I thought about a few pieces I could eliminate from mine, that are less frequently worn. But my red linen jacket whilst not my favourite item works brilliantly with a striped tee and jeans, and a tank I own. My black and pink jackets do not work with these two tops as well. So eliminating the red jacket and keeping the other two might lead to needing to change the pink to a blue jacket to be more versatile, which is more waste and spending. I guess in a nutshell going from three cotton jackets to two would invole discarding two and buying a new one, rather than keeping the three that work well.

Of course if one wears out I can think about the colour that will be most versatile but sometimes working with thrift and sales you don't have a full range of options.

This is a bit of a ramble sorry!

How important is "avoiding boredom" to you? I remember you have done a lot of culling recently, and that prior to that you found a 333 experiment too restrictive.

For me, it isn't a huge priority. Having enough clothes to avoid laundry bottlenecks (not quite achieved!), that are appropriate and mean I can wear a different outfit each of my 3 business wear working days, and cover the range of silouhettes I want (eg, a loose option for bloaty days)
is more important.

Case in point - I posted a thread yesterday with a dress I wore to a wedding. Loved the dress when I bought it - am a little less attracted to it now. I have worn it once a week for the last 2 years and it is good quality, in good condition, flattering etc, fashionable enough ( I think) so why not still wear it? I'm only bored for a minute in the morning and then I forget it. I would quite like to buy a new work dress, and I may, but it is not such a priority as say, keeping up with all the footwear that I actually wear out and have to replace!

I don't have time to sit down and do the maths, of making sure that I'd be covered for all situations but I'm guessing around 100 pieces. ( I think I have about 115, including footwear but not underwear, purely gear items and PJs). That would remove some of my lesser worn items that only get worn a few times a year.

I do get a bit bored though, at times, but that isn't the fault of numbers, but weather. For my "high summer capsule" for instance, I have 3 dresses that are narrow strapped and completely sack like, (and one more that I only wear at thome) plus one pair of lightweight shorts and a tank. I do get bored of those dresses - and I need that many to keep up with laundry and may buy another because I have stained one of them - but I'd just be buying the same silhouette because anything else is too hot and have the same potential for boredom.

For a minimum, I'd say around 75 pieces, which is about half the size of my current wardrobe. I have a lot of pieces that are *fine* but also have definite favorites that make me happy every time I wear them.

I don't get bored when I have a small travel capsule of things I love, but to truly cover all my bases from casual to dressy and a four season climate, I'd want at least a mid-sized wardrobe.

Joining in with those who say my minimum to feel well-dressed in my four season multi-role life would be 100. At the moment I have more than this. (About 130, including coats and footwear but not counting gear, scarves, bags, undies, jewellery).

It doesn't feel like too much. There are no items that go completely unworn. There are a few items, mostly special occasion, that only get a few wears per year.

I could exist with fewer items, of course, and have certainly done so in the past. But what for, if this is more comfortable for me and works better?

For me it would be around 180 pieces to feel well dressed. That's average 30 per micro seasons times 5 = 150. The extra 30 is 10 for fudge room and 20 for my work uniform.

My 5 seasons are: Hot Summer (longest of all of them so maybe this would be a 40 piece category). Warm fall (shorter season, so 20 pieces). Cool fall/Winter 30-40 pieces. Cool Spring 20 pieces. Warm Spring 30 pieces.

I do think I own more pieces than this though. I think I have some extra capsules for formal wear and travel occasions. They probably add another 25-40 pieces to my wardrobe. Then I have a lot of holding zone pieces. So my actual wardrobe could be more like 300 pieces currently. But I would like to get it close to the 180-200 piece count.

These numbers threads always make me feel like a hoarder LOL! I think this is one of the few times I've contributed to one of these threads and come out with my count.

A travel capsule would be totally different, and obviously I could get along with less, but 100-150 pieces is my minimum for at home, multiple roles in regular life, seasons, laundry, etc. That's not counting undergarments, workout gear, or accessories. That amount, and being able to shop and replace 1 for 1 as the year went by, would probably give me enough variety. I'm like Sterling - whenever I've tried 30x30 or any other limiting challenge I've gotten bored and irritated by the second week. Same thing happened on my last long trip, two weeks in Europe with one suitcase and limited access to laundry. By the time I got home I didn't want to see any of those clothes again, and there were several times when I felt over or underdressed for occasions but there was nothing I could do about it. You get a pass when you're traveling, but there's no reason to put up with that at home all for the sake of some sort of principle of minimalism, IMO.

I'm like Elly that I don't like having to do laundry all the time, either. One thing that I remember about Claire's capsules was that iirc she changed into loungewear whenever she got home, and that wasn't included in her count. So the ten pieces weren't the whole of her wardrobe, just the going out portion, and she had to replace pieces often after just one season, because they'd been worn so much that they were worn out. So it's not like you get a get out of shopping card with a tiny capsule, either, in fact maybe the exact opposite.

I spent six months in Australia when I was in college with one suitcase of stuff, and I don't remember being super-bored with my clothes. But I also did a lot of shopping - there were some secondhand shops that were perfect for a student budget and the exchange rate was favorable at the time. I definitely came back with more than I left with (I also lost some weight with all the walking I was doing, so I sorta had to buy some new things at least).

1 winter coat
1 mac
2 work skirts
1 jeans
4 toppers
10 jersey tops and/or blouses
2 dressy tops
1 boots
3 shoes
12 or more scarves
Gloves and winter hat
2 other complete outfits
That's kind of assuming summer tops and dresses can be swapped in.

It's more or less 50 items in total. I think I'd prefer another dozen things but am not sure what types.

I interpreted this as "what is a realistically minimal wardrobe size to maintain for you personally" because the OP was asking about boredom.

I know from experience I can do a 10-piece seasonal wardrobe Claire style (because remember, layering pieces including toppers, shoes and accessories don't count in her #s, nor does gear and loungewear, just in budget). However, for my lifestyle it was a pain in the behind. The laundry alone was really limiting for me, because I have limited washer access. For me, it is so much nicer to be able to decide to accept a last minute invite and know I'll have something suitable clean and something to wear the next day (not hand-washing an emergency outfit in the sink at 10 pm and praying it dries) and that I don't show up at every gallery event in the same outfit (sometimes we have 3 in one month and the art crowd isn't huge in the community). Plus, unless you live in a really consistent climate there are always moments where you don't have stuff that is quite right for the temps.

Claire has a very unique set of circumstance that make her wardrobe work for her.

I personally don't get "bored" with my clothes, but after wearing the same shirt every week for 6 or 8 months it doesn't look as great.

I like that some ladies were talking about it like a travel capsule (waving at Kari!) because I know that we have had a few posters who have done the living out of a suitcase thing for a few months or years-- and I feel like 6 months is way different than 2 years.

I recently asked my mother what her grandmother had in their shared closet back in the late 1950s (imagine the horror of sharing a room with your grandma when you are 14). Mom said Grammy had 3-4 house dresses and a nice dress for church. She probably had a sweater or two and a coat. A couple pair of shoes. In short, not much.

ClearlyClaire used to post a lot about her 10 piece wardrobe, updated every three months. There was a bit of churn from wear and her climate was pretty mild as I recall, but still, she was happily making 10 pieces at a time work.

I have no idea. Definitely a smaller number of items than I currently have, because I don't wear everything in my closet. <hiding head in shame>
But then I've never particularly been concerned about keeping a "lean" closet - at this stage I am a lot more focused on efficiency, meaning I actually wear what I have, and I do think that is different.
An easier approach for me would be to think about the minimum number of outfits I need or would like for the various parts of my life. Like racheylou, I have a variety of "roles" I'm playing at this point in life, and while I COULD make a few generic pieces work for everything, I don't particularly want to. I would probably be comfortable with 6-10 complete outfits for each capsule (not counting the really unusual ones, like "summer daytime wedding".)

Years ago I attempted project 333. Thirty-three items for three months time. It was a complete bust for me, but I did learn a lot about myself during the process.

I learned I really do need more variety. And that no matter how well I edit and cull my capsules, 33 items is not sufficient. This gave me pause. I learned that I need a minimum of 100 items in my wardrobe to be truly happy (includes all four seasons). Everything is counted, even coat and jewelry.

This is a big jump from the 33, but I feel happy with my wardrobe. I have variety. I have items that can take me from the field to court (if need be).

I knew I had worked this out last year and I got to 54 in this thread.

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-look-like

I did a wardrobe count last weekend and got to 100 excluding accessories, underwear and gear so i am over stocked.

Whilst I could survive with the list, it would only work if I had a true capsule wardrobe, limited silhouettes and colours. Working with existing pieces it does not work so well.

Boy, I fail at this. My life is very varied, divided. I have a corporate office life, then my bakery life, my hipstery out and about life, my puttering at home life, the outdoorsy/dog stuff, family life (which can involve intense formality and the total opposite)... I could slog it out with a black skirt, a grey skirt, a white blouse and a brown sweater, but I'd always be dressed wrong...

Fun question! So, I'm going to interpret this as a challenge, imagining that I'm going to be living overseas for a year, and therefore can't move with my entire wardrobe and need to bring a limited amount of pieces with me that are versatile but still don't make me feel bored, and lift my spirits when I wear them.
I'm also going to make a rule to pick finds from my actual YLF finds that I either own or are close to what I own if possible, as it's helpful for me to visualize what I'm packing as well as forming cohesive potential outfits. (I don't really have accessories pictured.)

I'm going to pick London for my fantasy location because I love the city, and the climate is quite similar to Seattle. I'll imagine my workplace and lifestyle to be quite similar to what it is today, meaning that I'm working someplace that is casual but I like to bat for "team dressy" when possible, and I need a "doggy walking in cold/drizzly weather" capsule.

Coats/Jackets: 1 lined trench; 3 jackets: green leather moto, black zipperless pleather jacket, purple activewear jacket
Tops: 1 sweater, 6 blouses, 4 knit tops
Pants: 2 pair jeans: Light blue straight legs and gray skinnies; 1 pair black scuba pants; 2 pair activewear pants/shorts; 1 pair leggings
Dresses: 1 smart casual/workwear capsule dress; 1 nicer dress for fancy events, weddings
Skirts: 2 pencil skirts: one solid black, one cobalt
Pajamas: 2 pair pajamas, 1 robe
Footwear: 1 pair sneakers, 2 booties: green waterproof, burgundy suede; Black knee high boots; Rose gold low wedges
Intimates: 2 camisoles; 3 bras; 15 pair undies; 2 pair tights
Handbags: 1 cobalt crossbody purse; 1 bronze zippered wallet that can be used as a clutch
Accessories: 2 chunky necklaces, 2 scarves, 1 pair gloves, 1 black beret, 1 pair glasses, 1 umbrella

ETA: Including intimates (multiple bras, camis, and undies) and accessories, I think that's 65 (or so) individual items.

Not including those categories it's around 35 items.

Very interested in this post. Hubby and I are currently discussing the possibity of travelling for six months so packing will be quite an issue. On vacation we only ever do carryon, but have already decided that won't work, but the bags still have to be manageable so will probably do 2 carryon size, 1 x 4 wheeled to be checked, and 1 x backpsck style. By the time I carry 6 months worth of medication, contact lenses etc and a cross stitch for amusement there still won't be a lot of room for clothes. I usually never take more than 3 pairs of shoes including the ones I am wearing. But for a trip of this length, fine weather, I feel the minimum would be 1 x black lace up sneakers (have bought an all black pair of sketchers at the ready) that can be used for day walks/hikes, silver animal print slip on -sketchers, black wedge sandals, pewter walking sandals and orthaheel thongs.

I am already shopping for a few items with this plan in mind, so had better mske sure it comes to fruition lol.
