Angie, could you recommend an esthetician (or a salon you typically go to)? I'm also in Seattle and would like to find someone knowledgeable to have a facial done a few times a year.

Tanya, I see I got to this post too late to make a fresh comment but I enjoyed it enormously!! Did you consider to follow the topic with body products or remedy for the face? Like puffy eyes or other that need a treatment out of normal routine way? I wonder what kind of home remedies or sure bets we use as a emergency:-)

Patience and Sarah, I WAS planning on going to Salon 505, how funny! Well, it's close to my apartment and it looks nice. I guess I will make an appointment with Kathy since you like her Patience.

I use Salon 505, how funny.

My makeup routine for every day is:

* Tinted moisturizer (I'm currently out so I'm using half L'Oreal True Match foundation, half Skin Cueticles Daily Moisture to make a sort of mouse texture)
* Bronzer (currently using Sonia Kashuk - not my favorite, but it works)
* Blush (Nars Orgasm) or Softlight Tint by Smashbox as blush/face highlighter
* MAC Cork eyeshadow to define brows
* MAC Pink Opal pigment powder as eye highlight
* Various MAC shadows for liner (I wet a liner brush and use powder as a liner)
* Loreal Voluminous mascara - I love this stuff!
* MAC lipgloss

On weekends or evenings I add a shadow to the crease and use a darker eyeliner.

My favorite makeup artist is Carmindy, and her book The 5 Minute Face is really helpful. She lists specific brands and products, and shows you how to build on your 5 Minute Face for evenings or various special occasions. Definitely worth checking out!

I'm still fairly young, so I like to keep my face fresh and light.

Ana, if you're thinking of going to Salon 505, you could try Kathy. She waxes my eyebrows (though I may be switching to threading now) but she is always wanting to give me a facial too. I just haven't made time to do it so I don't actually know how she is for that. She did examine my skin one day when I was getting my eyebrows waxed, just because. And she always notices if my skin is dry and tells me to drink more water. ;)

I'm one of those who doesn't usually wear make up at all unless I'm going out. I am trying to get into the habit of wearing lipstick at least but I haven't been successful thus far. Any tips would be helpful.

I use cetaphil and occasionally pevonia exfoliator (which said Kathy recommended to me). The exfoliator is wonderful but something you should only use a couple of times a week. I also use the Clarins UV protection per Angie's recommendation. I guess I need to find a moisturizer but I'm not really sure how to pick one. I also got this lip therapy

http://www.sephora.com/browse/.....inate=true

which I really like a lot when I remember to use it ;)

With my dark skin, I refuse to wear foundation. I'm sure the technology is better now but when I have tried it before there is always a line showing at the edge. I don't really like a lot of make up anyway.

For going out I would wear a natural eyeshadow (Nars), dark brown eyeliner (smashbox and I've also used mac), mascara (mac zoom in black), a little bit of bronzer on my cheek bones, lipstick. I've finally decided I don't like gloss. I haven't really settled on a lipstick color but I usually go for something very natural, more red-brown than pink. I've been meaning to try black honey.

I didn't grow up wearing make up so it's one of those things I really prefer to have people tell me what I should use. For mother's day I got a make over at Sephora and while I enjoyed myself I found the store a little overwhelming. The girl also put a lot more make up on me than I'm used to. In the future, I may stick to the counters.

I wash with Eliz. Grady Milk Wash. Remove eye makeup with a drug store eye makeup remover (L'Oreal, I think). A few times a week, I exfoliate my face in the shower with a drug store exfoliator--I don't think the brand matters, they all seem to do the same thing, so I buy different brands each time.

Make up: I moisturize with Aveeno SPF 30. Eliz. Grady mineral foundation. I do not add any color on top of that. A bit of eye liner on the tops of my lids...and a quick brush of mascara on both top and bottom lashes. Sometimes I wear the Black Honey lipstick that Angie recommended--but since I keep it in my purse, I usually forget to apply it. It takes me about 2 minutes to put on my makeup...and about 5 minutes to properly wash my face at the end of the day.

A few more comments:

Like Tanya, I've heard good things about Smashbox primer. A couple weeks ago I was at Sephora, prepared to buy it, when the salesperson talked me into the Laura Mercier mineral primer. Next I might try Smashbox, as I tend to be wooed by beauty products and am always looking for the perfect one.

I adore facials. I was on a mission to get them monthly, but that didn't work out, so I try to get them several times a year. I love the way my skin feels afterward.

I alo use Estee Lauder smoothing cream concealer, forgot to mention that in my original post. I love it.

I am not an aesthetician expert by any means but just my 2 cents worth. I've personally been to 2. One took her time and made it a very relaxing experience. She seemed to love her job, it was her life.
The second one was very brief. I felt I could have done the same for myself at home. She talked about going back to school to become a nurse. Her heart just wasn't into it.
My aunt is an aesthetician and she' s the most loving caring person I've known. I think that is a trait you are looking for.

Not to hijack the thread, but I did want to comment on the lipstick and facial. I used to wear the Dolce Vita. It is a really pretty color; i think that is a good choice. If you are ever in the mood for something different, I would recommend putting on only mascara and then going for the red lipstick. It seems strange, but red lipstick really makes your eyes pop. My stylist dyed my brows quite dark for the summer, and having that frame with the poppy lips is just fun. I put on several layers to go out at night, and only one or two for a played down daytime look.

Ana, finding a good aesthetician requires first asking friends or colleagues (or reading online reviews, whatever they're worth) and second just trying until you find one you like. I went to a handful of places until I found a local lady that I really like. If you don't love the first one you try, keep looking! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the information. There's a spa place down the street from my apartment, so I might make an appointment there.

Angie, I think the Manhunt color will look really good on you! It's exactly how Christie described--a sheer, bright poppy red--very pretty. The lipstick is very moisturizing too, I can't really even feel it on my lips.

I hear you Ana and Tanya. I'm sure your faces look naturally made up! I’m going to try Nars Manhunt Christie – sounds like I’d love it.

Facials are fabulous. My late mother swore by them and so do I. They get rid of skin impurities and toxin build up. You feel SO cleansed and neutralized after a facial whether you’re oily OR dry. Your pores are fine and your skin feels pretty. The glow is at its best a week after a facial. I also go to relax. It’s the only form of spa treatment I can handle. I can’t bare massages or pedicures, but I love a face and head massage. If I could manage once a month I would, but I don’t have the time. As Christie so rightly mentions, it’s all about finding a competent aesthetician. I’ve been having facials for 18 years and have never had a problem with my sensitive skin or eczema. In my experience, aestheticians are often more knowledgeable than dermies and sales reps. Give it a bash, Ana.

Thanks for the info, Christie! I went for my daily walk today and there is a Sephora just down the street from my apartment, so I went and I didn't try any of the convertible colors, but I did try the Nars sheer lipstick you recommended. I looked at the Manhunt color (the name is so cool, it makes me smile). That is a really pretty color! I bet it looks so pretty with your coloring, too. I usually like to play up my eyes, so I go with a more subdued color on my lips. I fell in love with "Dolce Vita," which is a really sheer warm pink color (pretty close to my natural lip color) and I bought it. It feels really nice on my lips too, not dry at all.

I still want to try the Nars convertible color. How would you say it compares to a powder blush? I currently wear a powder because the weather is so hot here.

Thanks for the info on facials, too. How do you all find an aesthetician that is good? It seems like all sorts of places do facials now, and I want to go to a good one.

I so wish I could get away with tinted moisturizer or less, but like Ana, I also have to wear foundation, though for different reasons I also can not wear cream blush, it settles in my pores and looks very bad.

I truly envy all the ladies who do not need the whole thing, but unfortunately I do.

Ana, I love my Nars ManHunt. I even wear it when I'm not planning to leave the house. The color makes me so happy. It sounds weird but true.

The convertible color is a cream blush. You can use it on your lips as well. The particular color I use (peony) is a peachy-pink color, and I don't like the shade on my lips. I haven't tried other colors, but if you have Sephora nearby, I would recommend trying the various shades to see if there is one you like both on your cheeks and lips.

A facial should be altered for your specific skin conditions. I have pretty oily and blemished skin, but I also have sensitive skin (especially in the winter), so an aesthetician would do a different facial for me than you. Any aesthetician worth her salt will sit with you and discuss your skin and will examine your skin closely before proceeding. I used to have facials fairly regularly, but I haven't in about a year. A good facial can make your skin glow.

Wow, I love reading what products you all use and what routines you follow, it's been very interesting.

I have sensitive skin like Angie, but I haven't tried Clarins. I might have to give it a go. I use Cetaphil facial cleaner and body soap in the shower, which my dermatologist recommended. I don't like the moisturizer though (I feel like it sits on top of my face and gets sticky), so I use Aveno Positively Radiant facial moisturizer with SPF 30, which is really nice and makes my skin soft. I tried using an SPF 45 moisturizer everyday, but my face starts to get sticky and feel greasy right away. Maybe I'll try the Clarins one Angie recommends.

I also have Rosacea, which is getting worse as I get older (my mom has it terribly on her face--it looks like she's burned on her cheeks). I've been thinking about getting it lasered for a while, but I need to do more research and talk to my derm. In the mean time, I HAVE to use a foundation, and I use Bare Minerals which I love. My eyeshadow/mascara changes by the season, but is always some shade of warm brown so it still looks natural. My lipstick changes daily, because I get bored easily, but I always choose very natural pinks or corals there too.

Christie, I'm always looking for a new lipstick and I love sheer colors--I'm going to look into the Nars lipsticks you recommended, and also the convertible color. I've read about that and wondered how it works. Is it like a cream blush?

Angie, you said you get a facial done every 2 months. What does that entail? I know not all facials are the same, and I've been leery of going because I didn't know what would irritate my eczema and what wouldn't.

I used to wear a little more make-up (not much more), but after reading Angie's post awhile ago on make-up, I cut back to only a few essentials (see below for links).

I am pale (though I get a nice golden color in the summer, sort of like Kate Hudson) with blonde hair and blue eyes. I have nice long eye lashes, but, unfortunately, they are blondish brown.

For skincare, I now swear by Philosophy products. They have finally conquered my adult acne that has plagued me throughout my 20s.

At Night I use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple, Help Me, and Hope in a Jar. In the morning I just wash with Purity Made Simple.

For make-up I use 3 items each day:

1. Stila's Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30 (it is new, oil free, and contains witch hazel and other stuff that helps control oil);

2. Stila's convertible color in peony on my cheeks; and

3. Nars lipstick in Manhunt (sheer, poppy red) (I love the pop of this color on my otherwise barely there face).

I have my eyelashes professionally tinted right now, so I only wear mascara if I'm going out. I am not brand loyal with mascara, but right now I have one by Stila in brown.

I also keep my brows well groomed and dyed. I use a clear brow gloss by Anastasia to keep them tamed.

I switch up my lipsticks each season, and for the last few, I've been tending towards reds. I like Nars because they are sheer reds, and you can layer them for a deeper color. But I've recently read much about Lipstick Queen's lipsticks, and I think this fall I might have a go at that.

Great thread. I have brown skin, black hair, combination skin. I use mostly Mac products and really like them. I use Mac lipstick (love Dark Side) and eyeliner. When I have time, I also use mascara - sometimes Mac though I'm a huge fan of Lancome Fatale which they have stopped carrying unfortunately. I have bought foundation but haven't yet had the nerve to use it. I would also like to use eye shadow and a hint of blush for evening/fancy occasions. Again need that little boost of guts to get started I guess and enough time set aside to do these things.

Thanks again Angie for guidelines that we need to hear. In general we have people trying to sell us their product, which is fine and makes the world go around, but basic guidelines are hard to come by. That's why I so appreciate your blog.

Nice thread, Tanya. Wow! People are vociferous and detailed about their make-up routine. And how different everyone’s is. Fantastic.

I believe you have it down to 7 minutes, Tanya. Here’s mine:

o	Treatment: I use Clarins. I’ve been using their products for 13 years and it works well for my skin type. I have very fine, dry, sensitive, Nordic skin and indulge is most of their facial treatment products. There is no substitute for their 40+ SUV sun block which I apply every day. I spend money in this area of my life. You only have one skin and I take care of mine as well as I can. I take my eye-brow grooming very seriously and have facials every two months.
o	Make-up: I hardly spend money on make-up, but believe in a few products that I swear by. I use Traceless tinted moisturizer by Precriptives, a bit of cream blush by Prescriptives, Lancôme mascara, Anastasia eyebrow pencil, Mac lipstick and Kenzo flower perfume. I do not use anything else and my face always looks the same. I don’t even change the colour of my lipstick. I can be walking our dogs or attending a ball and apart from my attire, I always look the same.

I wholeheartedly believe in a natural, polished look. I abhor the look of an over made up face. (Quite right Judy, makeover shows always over do the makeup bit). However, very few women get away with nothing on their face. It’s usually a very exotic looking woman that’s able to, and even then she’ll look better with lip treatment. I do not encourage that you wear nothing on your face after a certain age. You WILL look better with a little polish. It’s perfecting that polish that’s key. Sounds like many of you have!

Well, like most teenagers for a while I was wearing a lot of makeup, including the whole eyeliner look, but over the past couple of months, I have become, shall I say, convicted about wearing so much makeup. Especially, after reading about French women and their wonderful skin and low key makeup routine. I thought I'd give it a try wearing less makeup in a tasteful way and I love it!

First of all, I don't wear foundation because I take vitamin E which helps tremendously with keeping my skin clear and fresh looking.

I wash my face in the morning and evening and use moisturizer with SPF 15 in it.

>coverup
>small amount of bronzer in the Summertime
>small amount of blush
>light eyeliner close to my lash base, on my top lid; sometimes I line the bottom if I'm getting dressed up
>curl my eyelashes
>mascara
>light lipstick
>perfume

The thing that really makes it easy to not wear very much makeup is being ruthless in your grooming regime, too! Being badly groomed will still ruin your look even if you're wearing a little or a lot of makeup. Groom the eyebrows back, brush the teeth, comb the hair, and clean the ears. Just doing that takes a girl a long way.

Inge, I'm also in the market for a new tinted moisturizer. I have been using the cover girl brand and another drugstore one - I think it's called Smart shade - and both are so-so. Will be interested to hear more recommendations.

Tanya, I've only tried two face primers so far - one by DHC and the Revlon one I mentioned. Both are pretty good. The DHC is like a silicone. You just need a teeny tiny bit. Make-up slides on more easily and smoother.

But I also really like the Revlon one! It has a cooling feel when you put it on your skin, and there is something in it that firms the skin and makes fine lines less noticeable.

With that said, I don't think you really need a primer unless you are over a certain age. I think primers are for when you have fine lines or wrinkles - helps smooth out the coverage.

Who said they were looking for a mascara that doesn't clump? Try the Lash Blast, or Lash Exact. (I think that's the name). By the same company, same wand, the Blast is just supposed to give you longer lashes. Both are clump-free. There's something about the wand. It really works - take this from someone who's never been clump-free before. ;-)

I do not put mascara or liner on my lower lids, because my eyes are small and it just makes them look even smaller.

Great question Tanya!
I'm like Judy, very minimalist, I wear almost no make-up.

I have mid-brown hair (ash colour), hazel eyes, dark and long eyelashes, dark eyebrows and fair skin.

I use moisturizer in the morning (I'm very happy with the La Roche-Posay products at the moment and depending on how dry my skin is, I alternate between Hydraphase XL with SPF15, Hydraphase Riche and Nutritic), and apply some lip balm (at the moment it's three different 'flavours' by Sur Plus or Candy Kisses Watermelon with vitamin E and SPF, or something similar to Labello, the yellow one for Summer with SPF and vitamin E).
If the moisturizer doesn't contain SPF, I add sunscreen lotion (Anthelios XL +50, La Roche-Posay).

At night I clean my face with a lotion and apply Hydraphase yeux or E-line eye contour with vitamin E and often Nutritic again (which can be used as a night cream too).

When I do wear make-up, it's:
- Mac Select SPF15 foundation (NW25) - but I blend it with my moisturizer before applying: I still haven't mastered the art of perfect foundation application...
- Mac Select Sheer/Pressed powder (NW25)
- Mac Eye Shadow Seedy Pearl, applied on eyelid and arch, or sometimes only below the brow to highlight
- Mac Eye Shadow Greensmoke, applied as eyeliner just above upper lashes
- I usually skip the mascara since I have dark lashes anyway (and still haven't found the perfect one that doesn't 'gunk up'), or I use some colourless mascara
- Clinique Black Honey lipstick - discovered it through YLF, and the rave reviews are true: it's the perfect colour! I do find it a bit dry, so I apply lip balm first and then put it on.

I have to say though, that lately I've been thinking that with age, a completely bare face isn't my best look, so I do try to use lipstick more often and I wish there were more tinted moisturizers (preferably with SPF also) available here; that would give me some coverage, colour and save time.

What I wanted to ask: in another thread I read about Traceless (Prescriptives):
http://www.prescriptives.com/t.....D=PROD1028
is this more of a tinted moisturizer (i.e. easy to apply, just rub it in), or more of a foundation (something you have to 'dab' on, being careful to get an even effect)?

San, I think it works the same way as yours Clarins filler, it fills in the pores and it is used under foundation, although I do use it on it's own sometimes.

The make-up primer is supposed to keep the foundation on longer/better, but I am yet to try it. Some ladies above mentioned using one though. This is the one I've heard good things about:

Tanya, how does the pore minimizer work? I have a 'pore filler' from Clarins which I love. It makes the skin look very smooth. You apply under foundation or I guess you could use it by itself.
I've never heard of a make up primer. I've seen the lash primer which you use under mascara. Does the make up primer keep the foundation on better?

Oh, what great responses so far.

I see you ladies are adding skin-care products too, so I'll add to that: Both morning and evening I use Neutrogena's Fresh Foaming Cleanser and 3-in-1 Acne Hydrating treatment ( a chemical exfoliant with BHA). In the morning I'll add Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel and in the evening Olay's Regenerist Serum. I'm also using prescription gel called Retin-A-Micro, but only every third-fourth evening due to side effects. Occasionally I'll splurge on Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizer but it's not a constant part of my routine. And my favorite lip balm are Smith's Rosebud Salve and Labello - a German brand that I stock up on whenever I'm in Europe since I have not seen it in USA so far.

I only wear my daily make-up if I'm out of the house, if I'm staying in I'll stick to tinted moisturizer ( Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Enhancer) and lip balm. I wish I could get away without wearing the whole foundation/concealer thing in public but alas my skin won't allow for that.

I am curious to try a make-up primer. Is there any out there you ladies would recomend for combination/oily skin? I've read raves about Smashbox Photo Finish but preffer recommendations from real people :)

Oh, and for evening my favorite make-up is a seriously smoky eye with a lot of pale lip gloss.

Fun thread. I like reading about everyone else's beauty routines.

I have fair skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. My skin can be sensitive. I wash with Cetaphil, nothing else. It's very gentle.

In the morning I use Mario Badescu moisturizer w/ SPF 15. Then:
Laura Mercier mineral primer
Bare Escentuals foundation/concealer
Nars Orgasm blush
Bare Escentuals mineral veil
Sometimes brown eyeliner (Revlon? L'oreal?) on upper lids (at night I add a neutral eye shadow, and eye liner, but not for day.)
Cover Girl Last Exact mascara
Clinique Black Honey lipstick (which I love, and found out about after Angie recommended it!)
Kiehl's lip balm #1

At night after I wash my face I use Olay Regenerist serum and night recovery cream.

Great topic, Tanya.

Backgroud: I have dark brown hair, dark brown thick but always well groomed eyebrows, dark brown eyes and olive skin. My eyes are very big and I have long eyelashes, so I like to play that up and mute everything else out. I am also a big fan of Lancome's makeup.

Routine:
1. I wash my face with Dermatologica's calming cleaner daily. I like it because it's very gentle. After I workout and I feel like my face needs something a little stronger, I use a Clinique cream based scrub.
2. Lancome or Clinique moisterizer with SPF 15.
3. Lancome undereye concealer under eyes and on eyelids.
4. Lancome matte makeup on entire face.
5. Chanel black eyeliner smudged into upper lash line.
6. Lancome black mascara on upper lashes, and a tiny touch on the lower lashes.
7. Lancome shimmer eyeshadow in a champage color on the inside tearduct of my eye and lightly on my lid and right under the outside of my eyebrow for highlight.
8. Benefit moonshine shimmer on cheekbones for highlight.
9. Makeup Forever translucent powder all over to set.
10. Either a lipbalm, a Lancome juicy tube lipgloss, or Nars Turkish Delight lipgloss (it's a shiny nude lipgloss - I believe Kim Kardashian wears the same shade).

Wow. That seems like a lot, but I promise, it's not. I always keep it very light and natural, especially in the summer. I'm sorry I wasn't very specific with the products - I don't have my makeup with me - but if anyone wants to know the exact shade or type I use, feel free to ask.

Tanya, great thread...I'll weigh in, but don't think I have anything much to offer here. I only use lipstick! ...Aveda for the last 10 years or so. Skin care...Dr Hauschka all the way...LOVE it. I've used it for labout the last 13 years. You can get it at Whole Foods and there is an online store. Personally, when I watch shows like What Not to Wear and they do the make up, I often don't like the change...I prefer to see someone's freckles for instance...but it's personal and I do respect that others really get into it. It becomes their signature look, especially if they do a lot with their eyes. I found when I was younger, I did a bit more eyes and cheeks, but never foundation. Now, I find less is more!
