Warm-weather “tropical” wools are woven deliberately loose from very fine fibers to keep them from doing too good of a job insulating the wearer.

I like tropical weight wool too. I find wool regulates temps for me, keeps me at an even temp. But it's still heavier than a fine cotton.
as suz and vix have said, tropical wool is a light weight wool, it refers to the way that the wool was woven (my mom was a textile chemist). i wear it year round. wool "breaths" very well, so i don't find it to be hot. and since wool drapes very well, i don't feel all crinkled and wrinkled.

I have come across tropical wool, but it has never worked for me. It is a lighter weight, but I prefer my wool lined, and well, that is yet another layer. I also don't find it very "tropical" Especially in the sweltering heat of the Great Lakes region in the summer.

Hi Kristin -- Those would be some sheep! As you and Suz said, it's lighter weight and a looser weave. I actually have what I call a "spiderweight wool" dress going on 14 years old that I love -- it's a VERY open weave that requires an opaque slip for modesty.

I did (and currently do when visiting) wear wool in the swampy East Coast summer weather as it's inherently breathable and anti-bacterial.

Haha...I am tempted to say an oxymoron!

But you're right -- it's lighter weight wool that is wearable in a wider temperature range. I personally wouldn't wear it in the tropics except in frigid air conditioning. But theoretically, one can wear it in the heat.

Hi everyone. I've had a question on my mind for a bit, but I keep forgetting to ask. What exactly is tropical wool? Is it suppose to be like a lightweight wool that can be worn in warmer months? Or is it wool from sheep who enjoy mai-tais? :)

In all honesty, is it different from regular wool? Thanks!
