I saved answering this one for my day in SF seeing Elf on stage...

Boots, boots and more boots! I swear a woman could toss her entire shoe library save for a pair of slip on sneaks and live her whole life in boots & booties. All heights, all colors. This is SF after all!

Lots of leather & pleather, esp leggings, motos & various mixed media toppers.

Gorgeous sweaters. We are living in a golden age of sweater design. Buy some on January clearance!

It was 64 degrees & blue skies. The generators were working overtime to keep the ice rink in union square from turning into a slushy. So, not many coats. Some notable trenches, esp on foreign tourists.

World class menswear in the downtown core. You just don't see men turned out like that in 'Mens Wearhouse' suburbia where I now live. -sobs-

I don't know what this says, but the trend is Wardrobe by Walgreens (the pharmacy and whatnot shop). Waffle weave thermals, fleece lined leggings, dark brown faux Uggs, hooded sweatshirts, knit beanies. And Uniqlo puffers with dark skinnies from yesteryear.

In Vancouver, BC. Honestly things don't seem to vary that much here. Lots of skinny jeans tucked into boots. The ubiquitous yoga pants (which in my opinion are not real pants!). Oversized sweaters over leggings or jeans. Gore-Tex and puffer coats, as always. I have seen a few people trying to wear what are termed "blanket scarves" by various internet bloggers, but the look usually ends up being unsuccessful - the wearer generally ends up looking like they draped their sofa throw around their shoulders, and not in a good way. On the recent occasions that I've seen professional women wearing really fashionable outfits, many of them have just seemed uncomfortable or not very professional. In the Starbucks line a few days ago there was a woman who was wearing very high heels with a gold strip down the back of the heel, which I thought were pretty cool, but she just looked so uncomfortable in them. Maybe I am projecting, but good style in my city usually ends up being on the more comfortable end of the spectrum.

I am seeing lots of skinny jeans tucked into riding boots, puffy vests, and leggings as pants in my tiny town. Also extremely popular these days are "spirit jerseys". See example pic below..

Colorado here--- in a college and ski town, so it is looking a bit rough. Lots of gear, lots of "head-shop-meets-herbalist", lots of leggings as pants! That said, we also have some impecabbly-dressed casual or smart casual ladies. I've seen a lot of very nice puffers, great streamlined wool duffle coats, an amazing assortment of beanies, and awesome boots (lots of Fryes on the streets here since we have only had 1.5 snowstorms this winter, yet). I tend not to pay much attention to the college girls because it is not appropriate for my life, but what really ticks me off is when I see the ladies in their 40s, 50s, and beyond pulling crud like wearing leggings as pants with $400 boots.

How fun!

Usually I get to see the trends on people here within a few months of it trending because so many of us travel to the city to shop, shop online, or are from somewhere else (college kids, tourists, people visiting on buisness or retreats). However, they might be only on 2% of the population because we have fewer women than men in the community, and an equal split between college-aged and 50+ with fewer folks in between AND a HUGE amount of the 25-45 year olds are into outdoor rec, either personally or as an industry, so gear is everywhere.

Central Texas-tall riding boots and puffer vests. Metallic threads in both toppers and in bottom pieces. Multi tones in jewelry - think copper (rose/gold), brass as well as the usual golden and silver tones. Always-western style boots with leggings and long asymmetrical hem tops and scarves occasionally leggings paired with blazers. My favorite would be sweater dresses.

I'll jump in and say that one trend that I don't like is showing off the brands you're wearing. I've never like that (I remember even as a kid that I
didn't like the names of the brands showing off). And I mean not only names but particular famous patterns, like Louis Vuitton or Coach. In my town is huuuge to show off those kind of things.

I can identify with some of you that say that once something you like becomes popular you stop wearing it. I haven't stop wearing things that I like but I do feel less special. You don't have to go to the extreme of basing your style in the opposite of what's popular. I see the good part of it, if something you like is on trend, it's easier and cheaper to get it .

I'm in France and there are also a lot of knee length denim pencil skirts--which makes me mad because I used to have one that was AMAZING but it got so old and a little small and I finally had to get rid of it! Here the trends are mainly leggings and skinny jeans, some high rise and boot cut are coming back. I have been living in sweater dresses with insulated leggings and tights... but the main thing that is the biggest trend is a great pair of boots, both leather ankle boots for dry weather and also really good snow boots for bad weather (we are near the mountains). I have a great pair by Sorel (Joan of Arctic model, see pic) that have made a few girlfriends jealous, but now I'd love to have something from their new collection... Their new Joan of Arctic is amazing...

I do like this thread. Today in NW Tasmania where the temp reached 21C/70F I saw jeans, lots of black garments and patterned leggings worn as pants by women who really should wear tops longer than their high hip. (As a matter of interest, today was our summer solstice.)

Leggings as pants tucked into Uggs worn with a shorter top, not a tunic. The entire rear end is intentionally on display this way. The local young men LOVE this look.

Jeans with blingy back pockets, either skinnies or bootcut.

These are the looks I see in my sparsely populated rural county in mid-state California.

When I'm in a city I see a lot of sneakers worn with skinny jeans. Cons, Adidas, Vans, all types. In hipster neighborhoods I've seen skinny jeans rolled up to show lace up mid-calf boots or ankle boots. The city looks I'm seeing are very androgynous, I've noticed men and women wearing the exact same things. I have seen a few ponchos but not many. These are worn by the women with a bit of Boho chic style sensibility. Both of them looked very chic, and I actually got into a conversation with one of them. Both of them combined the poncho with skinny jeans and ankle booties. One wore the jeans tucked, the other had them rolled with a pair of SE Pettys.

I'm seeing more flat or low heeled footwear than ever before, even in car-centric California. I think women buy high heels for special occasions, but don't wear them much.

Those pants that Deborah mentioned are certainly very popular over here in Western Australia - my daughter bought some and raves about them - they are on my list for summer too. Oh and DEB - ankle strap sandals are definitely in over here too.

Other than that I am not sure - since I have been working in the arctic office I feel a bit secluded from the rest of the world!

It is summer in downtown Melbourne....I see lots of Breton stripes and all manner of crop tops, sheer tops, silk tees and lots of crew necklines. Boyfriend jeans, ankle length summer weight capris, cute short denim cut offs, ankle strap sandals, black, white, more black and fab sunglasses. I'm sure by next week, when our summer holidays are in full swing and we are in the heat of Western Australia it will change, and I'll see lots more colour, swimwear, summer dresses, skirts, cute sandals and berks. Not too many tattoos in my neck of the woods Caro....

The only women/girls I notice sporting a "look" or a trend are the college age girls (like my own, for example) - and it's an army parka, lace-up boots, and leggings. Winnipeg's not a terribly fashionable city and I don't see a lot of really noticeable trends among the average woman. Even among my own friends, no one look stands out. Interesting! Of course, we're all in winter outerwear now though, so most signs of style are somewhat muted.

Skinny pants tucked into boots of all different heights are everywhere. Since mid-November, I have been pretty much everywhere preparing for the Holiday season, I see skinny pants tucked into boots on 90 percent of the women I encounter. The look is stylish, comfortable, and can definitely go the distance. I know because I was wearing the same exact thing and I felt wonderful.

This is a really interesting question, and it's always good to realize that fashion and style are not the same thing - something can be high-fashion but not fit at all into one's context, which to me at least is an element of style (unless of course your style is to be different!).

In Aurora, which is a suburb north of Toronto, it's interesting because I have different groups of friends with different styles. My school-mom crew is a lot like me - classic, casual t-shirt or tailored sweaters, skinny jeans, tall riding boots. The 30-somethings I hang out with are more into the fluid and oversized fits and leggings, a lot of volume over skinny looks. One group is very into brands - Michael Kors and Coach for bags, MK watches, Tiffany and Pandora jewellery, Lululemon clothing. On my sojourn into Toronto, the style on the subway was super-eclectic, but when I got downtown is was a sea of neutrals, brown shoes and bags, and lots of boyfriends blazers over skinnies with heels. Of course everyone is also wrapped up for warmth these days - the great fashion equalizer!! :)

In Lincoln, Neb., the black stretchy yoga style pants are just about all you see in stores and on bodies. (I only wear these to the gym, however, so I'm terribly untrendy here.) Longish patterned cardigans and tunics are trending. Boots, mostly tall riding types (would love a pair but alas, legs are way too fat to find boots that do not strangle) with yoga pants tucked into them. Black puffer coats. I have a beautiful long (midcalf) scarlet wool coat and when I wear it, it gets so many compliments probably because it's not the ubiquitous black puffer. North Face black fleece jackets (no other brand will do...) Big knit or woven scarves. Fashion forward College women occasionally sport leather skater skirts.

Small Midwest city: more than I expected of black athletic pants, either tights or yoga/flared with athletic tops and zip jackets on the younger ladies; athletic shoes in black and colors; skinnies with tall boots and big cardigans on every age.

The department stores are showing nothing other than the usual, with a slight tendency towards longer, looser tops and sweaters with uneven hems, longer in back or swingy shapes, wider open necklines (what do you wear under those? Crew neck tees or turtlenecks don't seem to work well so I have been trying button up shirts.)

Chicago: black puffers, black slim pants or leggings, cream or gray mega-mufflers and loose beanie hats. While visiting the city I felt like a sore thumb in my dark blue parka, blue cross body bag, and red/blue fair-isle patterned hat. I didn't see much of what was under the outer wear - I suspect more neutral knit wear.

For shopping, I did wear black slim pants, black short boots, black knit top and cobalt merino pullover sweater, hopefully JTE (just trendy enough), one day; and jeans, gray chambray button up shirt, black with yellow accent stripes merino pullover sweater, black short boots the next day.

Boots tucked into jeans, leggings worn as pants (mostly teenagers, but some mature women also do this), puffer jackets, scarves. I've seen one poncho so far, worn by a teenager.

It's been cold in my office (the heater doesn't work!) so I've been forced to bundle up and sit by a space heater at my desk. It's hard to have style under conditions like this, but they are supposed to replace the 2 units that heat my area of the building.

Black, black, black, and more black! Booties, black hose or tights, black skirt (pencil) coloured top...or black skinnies, instead of the skirt.

Black ponte pants!

All the women here in New York City are wearing slim or skinny black ponte pants tucked into ankle or knee high boots. Now that it's cold, black puffer parkas and coats are everywhere. Gray knit hats and scarves are also popular.

But you know, those ponte pants aren't very warm. My ponte pants from Eileen Fisher are fairly heavy. I wore them yesterday with a puffer jacket and ankle boots and my legs were freezing.
