I do not see a rectangular tendency at all. You are an hourglass. Love your bob!

Marianne is right, rectangles can have a bust, like GG – who is a perfect rectangle with a bit of a bosom. And so are San and Marianne for that matter, perfect rectangles.

That is true Marianne, I am not busty, but not flat chested and am a rectangle.

You look like an hourglass to me, your hips and shoulders are definitely wider tha.n your waist

I am no expert but you look like an hourglass. That dress looks terrific!

From what I understand, rectangles can be busty, too.

Thank you Laura - I'm feeling a bit self-conscious about my body lately because I've recently gained a bit of weight. It's hard looking at photographs of myself because I never quite like the way I look.

I want to amend my measurements, since I read on another post (I think the info came from Maya) that the proper place to measure hips is around the fullest part. In that case, my hips are actually 37 inches, not 36. So that makes me think that I am more of an hourglass than a rectangle. Also, Shiny, you're right - there's no way that a 32F could count as a small chest. I think that now I'm in a d or dd, but still not small-chested by any means. And, alas, I don't play sports. I was a gymnast and figure skater a million years ago, but now all I do is work out at the gym.

I'm going to start looking for hourglass friendly clothes, and tonight when I get home, I'm going to post some more pictures of dresses that I'm trying to decide if I should keep or replace. This is enormously helpful - thank you so much!

Okay, I am way out on a limb here, but I am going to guess that you are an inverted triangle (because your hips measure smaller than your shoulders) with hourglass tendencies (thanks to your defined waist and bust measurement). You have a great figure!

Actually I think Shiny has the same body type as you do!

Okay I just went and re-read the rectangle post. I think you are not a rectangle, because rectangles have small chests. If you are an F I don't think you can be a rectangle?

Also they have "straight" waists - which to me is what I was saying about a "gradual" waist. The waist curves in gradually, instead of curving in suddenly, then curving right out again. For example my waist is probably only about 1-2 inches of indented area. There's nothing gradual about it. Which is why belts can be annoying.

You do seem to have an athletic build though. Do you play sports?

Looking at the Body Type Balancing Act graphics again, I'm probably more inverted triangle with hourglass tendencies. Or some shape that's smack in between the two. All I know is that playing up the waist I never thought I had, is a magical thing - give it a try!

You look more hourglass than rectangle to me. But maybe I don't really know what a rectangle is? Hmm.

I'm 5'0" and my measurements are 33-28-33. The width of my shoulders - measured straight across the front - are exactly the width of my hips. So to me that makes me an hourglass. I'm just an hourglass with a thickish waist!

But I also have a tendency towards inverted triangle, because when I gain weight, in addition to my stomach I gain first on my upper body. It takes a lot of weight gain before my lower body starts filling out.

The patterned dress you are wearing is fabulous on you. That dress, which is a really great shape for an hourglass, makes me think you are more hourglass. I am also betting once you get refitted for a bra, you are going to appear more hourglassy. And you really do have a waist - I would not call you an apple. Play up that waist.

Hmm, don't rectangles have more gradual waists? Which is probably why belts of all shapes and sizes work so much better for them.

Yes, I would recommend you first start with the hourglass recommendations, and see where that takes you. As you experiment, you'll figure out which guidelines work best. When I started dressing according to the hourglass guidelines, it was a huge difference, which clarified it for me. The part I borrow from inverted triangle guidelines is that I tend to steer away from tops with puff sleeves or epaulets and such - UNLESS I balance it out somehow in the bottom area (like wearing fuller cut jeans and not skinnies). I can get away with these sort of details, if I'm careful how I do it.

Make sense?

P.s. "Boxy" never even entered my mind when I looked at your photo. Eliminate that term from your head.

Thank you for the responses - I get so confused about body type, partly because I think I have a body that's difficult to fit. Maya, I am pretty short waisted, and I tend to gain weight in my stomach first. Sometimes I think that my body just isn't designed to fit properly into any clothing. To add to all of it, I'm under 5'3 so for skirts and dresses have to look for petite. (Not for pants, though, because they always end up too short.)

The problem I'm having now is how to dress a hourglassy-rectangle, or a rectangular-hourglass. The advice for these two body shapes seems somewhat conflicting...

I also say a rectangle leaning hourglass. Your measurements are very similar to mine but you are better proportioned. If you were short-waisted like me you would be an apple, but since you're not, you seem more rectangular.

I agree with a mix of those two shapes, though maybe reverse - hourglass with a tendency to rectangle.
Thanks for posting, crwilson. Love your hair and pretty smile.

Okay, per the advice of the people on the "Where do I start" post on the "Everything Else," I'm posting pictures for advice on my body type. My measurements are:
Shoulders: 38
Waist: 28
Hips: 36

I wear a 32F bra, although that's changing since I recently weaned dd - I have to be refitted. In any case, my measurements suggest an hourglass or an inverted triangle, but I think I look really boxy in the photos.
