I'm a little late chiming in, but it was great to step into your closets. Mine has lots of color, mostly reds, orange, rust, peach..do we see a "love" here? Then greens, teals, yellow golds, browns, a few navy, not much black, no white, a little cream. A mix of solids & patterns. Total probably in excess of 50, mostly worn year round.

This is the most coordinated wardrobe l've ever had, because I finally took the time to plan and shop instead of just buying to fill an immediate need or falling for the latest trend. It only took me a lifetime to figure out what colors I look best in. Slow learner or stubborn? Ha ha ha.

Interesting exercise!

My tops varied in color, but very little pattern..

My pants however, were all very dark- grays, blacks and a few browns.

Janet I want the "tops" section of my closet to look like yours someday!! So pretty :D

Interesting exercise! I will count when I get home (I'm guessing 50-50), but I do know my colors span a wide range.

When I was getting dressed earlier, I took a couple of quick pics of 1) the jackets, and 2) the tops in my closet. Interesting to take a closer look at the color choices!

(And yes, I do have a lot of clothes.)

I was recently noticing that somehow I've acquired a lot of black and white tops. There's also quite a bit of grey, dark teal and navy. And blue/grey & blue/red tartan shirts. Purple/lavender, fuchsia and plum make showings. Pink, red and emerald are kind of one-note-wonders in my closet, but they're there.

A fair mix of pattern and solids, I'd say.

As for numbers - I'm told my neighbors discuss the "hundreds of shirts" on my shelves. This is patently untrue. The hundreds are in storage. They cannot see them at all. hehe.

It seems to be a fairly even mix so far between cheerful rioters and sombre solid lovers. Also a few split colour personalities. Interesting! :-)

I found two more tops that I'd forgotten about because they were in the wash. One black, one charcoal. Hahaha.

Of those of you who have mostly neutrals but are adding a few colours, what kinds of colours are they? I'm a bit like Lisa, Janet and Isabel -- my "other" colours are a limited selection, but often quite bold or bright, and with certain colours being totally absent. Of my non-black or gray solid-colour tops, I've got:

navy
hot pink
teal
kelly green
cream
burgundy/wine red
olive
dusty blue

My ONLY patterns (for tops; I've got more patterned and colourful bottoms) are:

Navy and red stripe
various checks/plaids in blues/greens
white with blue pinstripes
blue with white pinstripes

Nothing in the orange, yellow or violet ranges; no reds (except wine red); no true whites; no browns. I do have some camel and brown bottoms, though.

I gotta say, my extreme lack of originality with colour sure makes packing for trips easier.

I have roughly the same number of tops as you, but I counted tees and layer tanks. I have red, blues, green, purple for colored tops and then blacks and white. I'd say I don't have any one color more represented than another. Maybe black, but just by a hair. This is an older pic - I have purged a lot of the brighter and patterned items out. I'm going way more subdued and neutral lately.

Oh, found a more recent pic of summer tops (my kitty was trying to be an animal print in there). Definitely brighter colors for summer.

It used to be mostly black. Now I have a lot of navy, grey and Jewel colors. WIth T shirts and camis, I probably also have around 50. ( and maybe another 10 that are very specific to super hot weather )

I agree that if you wear your tops regularly , then they are not too many. When I worked and travelled a lot, I just needed more clothes. Depends so much on your lifestyle.

My closer is organized by color, so this is easy. A quick scan of the tops gives a good picture:

A significant section of white, then LOTS of grey and black, a smattering of brown/tan/taupe. A bit of burgundy/red/coral, a very small bit of orange, yellow almost completely absent. Then LOTS of green, teal, and blue tones, followed by a bit of purple. Almost no pastel, but lots of saturated colors, darks, and jewel tones, as well as lots of pattern.

I'm not at home so I can't count, but I do know my closet is predominantly blue. Lots of different blues -- from chambray to denim to peacock to navy to ink. Plus some teal.

I also have a lot of cool purply-pinks -- orchid, fuchsia. And cranberry red.

And I have greys and taupes as well, in addition to black, of course.

My tops are mostly: blue, black, grey, with the occasional pink, wine, or white thrown in. There are many colors NOT in my wardrobe. I mostly use my tops to layer under blazers, my blazers again are mostly neutral, but I do have a kelly green blazer I just adore wearing.

For a total number, I've been reducing the size of my wardrobe for two years now and I still have lots of tops. 11 sweaters I cannot layer, 6 shirts/blouses, 15 knits (used for layering usually but can stand alone on a warmer day) and 10 long sleeve t's. That leaves me with 42 tops for fall/winter months.

For spring/summer I managed to reduce my collection to 7 short sleeve tops and 7 t-shirts, leaving me with 14 tops for spring/summer. I'm hoping to reduce my fall/winter clothing to similar numbers at the end of the season. Although fall/winter may be a bit larger because I wear 2-3 layers a day in colder months.

It's funny that Angie blogged about your worst/best colours today, because I was recently looking in my closet and thinking, gee, I've got a lot of dark stuff in there. Out of curiosity, I counted up all my tops -- blouses, tailored shirts, tee shirts of various sleeve lengths -- basically everything that isn't a layering tank top or something I would wear to clean the bathrooms. I included summer and winter tops.

This is my total: I was a little surprised to see that I've got 27 solid black tops (some with small graphics on them), 10 tops in various shades of gray, and only 16 tops in any other colour or print. Yikes! Looks like I've got funerals covered.

So, my two questions are: is 53 tops too many? I always feel like I don't have all that many tops. And, I sure hope I look all right in black and gray, because it looks like mostly that's what I'm wearing.

Is your closet a cheerful riot of colour and pattern? Or is it heavy on one or two solid colours, like mine?

ETA: contrary to what's suggested by my closet contents, I'm not a sombre person. I'm pretty extroverted and giggly.
