Thanks for posting about the jackets. Sounds like the hunt continues. I’m also wondering about Columbia. I purchased a winter coat from them this year and it has been excellent. Also a friend has a jacket from Marmot which she says is good.

For a curvier figure take a look at Duluth Trading. I have several pairs of their Flex-pedition hiking pants and love them. Duluth tends to run generous in their sizes and last year started offering several inseam options. Yay!!

Love their skorts too - not as short as many other gear brands.

I do a lot of hiking and outdoor activities year round, and I really like Under Armor’s moisture wicking tees and bras. Callie by Carrie Underwood is a nice brand for pretty athletic wear. I bought a few of her tee shirts last summer and will probably buy a few more this year. Very stylish and moisture wicking. Eddie Bauer is another favorite brand of mine. They have excellent summer and winter clothing items.

Hmm, that’s frustrating! I run into the tight hips issue a lot with women’s outdoor apparel. I’m trying to think of brands with a cut that might work for you. Possibly North Face or Columbia?

Nemosmom, FWIW I have these UPF hiking-friendly pants and the rise on a size 6 according to the website is just over 10”. They’re very comfortable, and have a variety of inseams as well.

Glory - a breathable rain shell seems so contradictory, but surely there's a great one to be had. I read (way too many) reviews on outdoor gear and just ordered a "Guardian" by Outdoor Research. I will let you know how it goes.

I have really enjoyed this thread and the great items people have. I have been searching for that elusive breathable rain shell for a couple of years now. I want it to be a bit longer and have a bit of wind resistance.
For the water shoes I have a pair from Walmart - super inexpensive, but they do the trick until I find something better. So far they have worked well for rocky beaches, kayaking etc.
I agree about the ticks and longer pants. There are some convertible pants to shorts options but I haven't tried them out yet. Last summer I wore these capris (which are like angle length pants on me). They are very light weight. The only thing I didn't like were the ties at the bottom which are meant to scrunch up and make them shorter. https://www.columbiasportswear....._1658431_c

Thank you again, everyone, for your feedback!

I went through my gear stash and think my only real holes are:

a breathable rain shell (my current one is like wearing a trashbag - great in a coastal December downpour, but super sweaty over 70F),

a pair of water shoes (maybe... I have pool slides, but nothing for lake/kayaking),

a pair of long, UPF, hiking-friendly pants (my previous hiking pants were designed to accommodate a backpack and fit super low-rise on me. These will be a challenge to find...)

Ticks are a major concern around here, so I think that eliminates shorts...
Now, where to find a pair of pants with a rise higher than 7"?!?

Bijou, with temps like that, no wonder you’re looking forward to fall! From Uniqlo, I like the Airism leggings. Haven’t had them for a summer yet, but they are moisture-wicking and not as warm as heat tech.

I feel like I like to camp in the desert a lot. So that’s 100F+ temps. Under those conditions, my only real gear item is hiking boots... or well trail runners now, because my boots gave up the ghost last summer. What I wear is a super super lightweight straw hat, a cotton sundress, and a linen jacket (for the sun protection) - and Crocs for in camp. I hike in this getup, lol. Not at all sporty looking. Not at all like I’m properly equipped.

I find Uniqlo heat tech clothing and other technical fabrics that have moisture wicking properties useful to exercise in. When out walking, I like long sleeve loose cotton blouses and shorts and a cap - I leave my hair out and long to give me sun protection on my ears and neck. Carrying a bottle of water is my go to, that and when I come home have a shower to cool down. Today it is 38C and when I went for my morning walk it was 33C. I try to make sure that as much of my walk is shady too, it helps.

I like Lands End rash guards. I sized up one size for a less fitted look. I also recommend their board shorts. They have generous pockets and seem well made. I like the longest ones but they come in several lengths. I like nylon fabric better than polyester. It is light weight and quick dry and does not wrinkle. For footwear, you want something supportive and light weight. I like ECCO sneakers and slip-on athletic shoes. Be sure that they are comfortable to walk in for miles.

Hmm, not super campy over here, but I have some Lulu shorts (and knock-offs) for outdoor exercise, as well as a couple of tanks with built in sportbra support.

Crocs (I know, I know!!) for walking on slippery rocks, etc at the lake, and water shoes for swimming. (I hate when I can't see the bottom!! Yuck, who know what lurking creature is there to be stood on).

And I have a Kipling crossbody beach/waterside bag, which is AMAZING because it's not super-big and has all sorts of pockets which are all waterproof, to contain sunscreen, waterbottle, etc. as well as watch, phone, without everything becoming a destroyed mess.

Coming back to add...

For hats, I find gear and casual are two totally different beasts. I like my Wallaroo for walks and gardening, but on canoe trips (and desert hiking, back in the day) I take my hideous Sunday Afternoons hat. The chin strap is essential on windy summits or open water. And the neck protection and ventilation are great. They are ridiculous; at least DS looks cute in his!

For underpinnings, I am a huge fan of the seamless merino knits from Branwyn Innerwear. And yes to Darn Tough socks!

Oooh yes to a dry bag! I used a ziplock in my daypack last time we went to Disney. The pack got soaked, my phone was safe, but I made a mental note to pick up a bag just for this purpose. I never got around to it... Adding it to the list! Thank you!

Big yes to a dry bag! I have this one https://www.yeti.com/en_US/bag...../YSKD.html
It has velcro straps so you can attach it right to the bungee cords on a boat.

A couple of things to add.
Waterproof phone dry bag, get one that’s designed to float.
Flip flops that can be hosed down, and which you feel comfortable wearing in a public shower (i also own a $5 pair from the drug store expressly for this perhaps)

Depending on what and where you are going, you might want a hydration pack.

Thank you all soooo much! These suggestions are really helpful!
I did not forget the sunscreen or hat! Hats are always difficult to fit thanks to my huge head and thick hair, and I would love to find a second one. Sunscreen is definitely a year-round essential for me.

I share a climate with suntiger.

- bottoms: Two pairs of hiking shorts, plus two pairs of lightweight, loose hiking pants. Running capri leggings, some loose Capri length pants with deep pockets for walking and photo exploring, a few pairs of cycling shorts, and a skort.

- Tops: Several sleeveless and short sleeves tees in technical fabric from Zella, Lululemon, etc. Several bicycling jerseys. Two loose long sleeve button front SPF protective shirts (they have collars that can be turned up for more sun protection on the neck too). Jackets are rarely needed in our summer activity, but I have a windbreaker (bought for cycling but multipurpose), hoodies, and rain jacket.

- Merrell hiking boots, trail runners, Teva hiking sandals (mostly worn on desert trips, too many mosquitoes here to leave ankles exposed). Water shoes that don’t get worn very often because I mostly swim in a pool. Balega short running socks and Darn Tough hiking socks.

- Several swimsuits and coverups. Coverups range from sarong to tunic style to lightweight casual jersey dresses to the Ripskirts, which also function great for everyday wear.

- Baseball style caps for running and hiking, floppy hat for photo exploring (I have a tiny head so hard to find a good fit but I have an old one that suffices even though I look like a dork). A super lightweight backpack when I’m going minimalist and a sturdier one with more structure for longer day hikes. Buffs for wiping off sweat or other random uses (headband, impromptu mask, etc). Good sports bras and wicking underwear. I don’t tolerate heat + humidity well so I tend to choose summer activity that allows me to be in the shade or the water — hiking in the woods kept me sane last summer.

I have a lot of gear but I don’t want to do laundry more than once a week, and this capsule is also my active travel capsule. I have a ridiculous amount of cycling gear because I did a week-long cycling event a few years ago and wanted fresh stuff every day!

So, my weather is no longer super hot (Pacific NW) -- so your mileage will vary, for sure. However....FWIW, with adjustments for your heat, my stuff is below. I don't camp, but I hike all over, bike, swim (didn't show my swimsuits or dedicated bike shorts, which I have yet to buy) and garden.

So far, this is the type of thing I have. I also have a couple of hats -- my head is big-ish, so I have a big squashable sunhat for the garden, unknown brand. And a white bike helmet. :)

The Icebreaker shorts are expensive even on sale (how I bought them) but WOW. I love them. They look good enough to go into town, but they have tons of pockets, dry super quickly, wick moisture, and are so lightweight and non-chafing.

I like the Ecco sandals for low-danger hiking in hot weather. If things are rougher, I'll wear my trail runners, but they are hot (goretex) so I avoid them where I think I can.

The Arc-teryx dress is a super useful little item -- works as a dress or a beach cover up. Dries fast. I think it's meant to be a golf dress? But I took it to Beijing in July with 100F temps and it held up -- wash and wear -- dries in a couple of hours. That type of garment is a dream for travel.

I, too, have a gigantic head and wear a Tilley hat, similar to #1. I’ve often said this area’s growth industry is skin cancer removal. I had a suspicious thing removed from my leg a couple years ago. My primary care doctor did the procedure because appointments with dermatologists in town couldn’t be had for love or money. Anyway, along with a hat I wear sunscreen. Everyday, even in winter.

The rest of my gear is the usual stuff. I wear my waterproof Salomon hiking shoes year round. #2 was taken in August a few years ago. You just never know. I wear my Converse sneakers for bike riding. I wore sandals in blissful ignorance until Carla scared me out of it. I started wearing skorts last year and liked them a lot.
