I'm usually on my way to class when I go out, so I carry a huge tote with my Spanish dictionary and notebook. Otherwise I carry:

Sunglasses
Pouch with makeup, pens, hair ties, and other small objects
Wallet stuffed with way too many pennies
Hanky and/or tissues
Ear phones
Shopping bag
Umbrella
Hat, scarf, gloves
Phone
Sometimes iPad or laptop
Sometimes another book
Miscellaneous receipts, bits of paper, trash, etc.

I'm not all that organized, and I have a tendency to carry a lot of "just in case" stuff, a habit which I am trying to break.

Here goes:

wallet
blackberry (work)
IPhone (personal)
Nokia (community role)
makeup bag
hairbrush
keys
Sunglasses

I travel by car mostly so anything else often goes in a separate bag or on the back seat ie. iPad, books, food :)

I have really tried to minimize what I carry on a daily basis.

I've been trying to pare down since I used to carry my whole house practically. I found a smaller bag I love so I'm making it work and so far haven't missed not having the toys, snacks, brush, first aid kit, home fabric and paint samples etc...
I currently have:
Wallets (one for debit card, cash, change, id and the other for credit cards, and the 10,000 membership/discount cards one seems to need these days)
makeup bag (compact, 4 lipsticks/glosses, nail file)
plastic envelope for coupons, receipts, prescriptions, etc..
pen
sunglasses case (with sunglasses inside)
keys (outside pocket)
a few cough drops, a bandaid and some tylenol (inside small pocket)

i usually have wallet, keys, and phone in my everyday bag. If I am going to the gym (which I always will have at least 1 child with me in this scenario) i end up carrying a huge bag and sometimes will just slip my wallet keys phone into it or sometimes if my purse *makes* my outfit I will just carry it separate. The gym bag includes: gym clothes, shoes, swimsuit, goggles, cap, flip flops, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, sunblock, towel, diapers, wipes, kids change of clothes x2 kids, kids drinks x2, kids snacks x2, snack and water for self, and usually some kind of lovey or random kid item.

I carry a medium-to-big size shoulder bag daily, since i commute by foot/bus and bring my lunch everyday. I refuse to carry multiple bags.
Today I have:
-wallet
-keys
-phone
-ipad
-ipod shuffle in a small pouch
-umbrella (usually i have sunglasses, but they are giant so I switched them for the umbrella because the sun is sadly not coming out today)
-lunch in insulated bag with utensils
-hair clip, lip balm, kleenex
-some random pieces of paper

I don't have them today, but sometimes I also have a cardigan and small water bottle. And very occasionally my 13" laptop, but I have to say my life got way better when I stopped carrying it around daily.

Transition - Oh yes, i do have sunglasses. I forgot about those because I usually have them on as I run out the door. Also a pen for those time I get on the subway so I can try to finish a suduko puzzle by the time I get to work.

I'm amazed how few of you live without sunglasses!

I won't admit what's really in my bag, but I at least need
1) phone
2) wallet
3) house keys, car keys, work keys
4) SUNGLASSES (often two pairs. . . one regular, and one to clip on my eyeglasses)

I really like to have
1) makeup
2) comb
3) calendar (my phone isn't fancy enough to have a usable calendar)
4) pen

And realistically I often have
1) diaper and wipes
2) camera (because my phone takes terrible pics)
3) something to pull my hair back with so I can drive with the windows down
4) hand sanitizer
5) something to de-frizz my hair on humid days

And I ought to have, but too often don't have
1) eyedrops/contacts case/glasses on days I try wearing contacts

Ever since Janet posted about heavy bags, I have been trying to keep things smaller (plus with end of winter I don't need an umbrella so that's helpful). Plus, I like to switch out bags so less is easier.

Wallet (needs cleanout - too many receipts and do all those rewards cards from everywhere drive you all nuts?)
phone
ipod - usually
pop up hairbrush
powder compact
lipbalm/lipstick - I can get a bunch of these going if not careful
pen
mini notebook
readers
sunglasses
foldup carryall bag
small makeup/personal essentials bag
gum

That seems like a lot but it's much less than I used to tote.

I guess this really depends on whether you are commuting by car or not.

I only have my wallet, keys, comb/mirror, chapstick and some Advil in my bag. I carry a separate lunch bag and keep my spare shoes, makeup bag, and water at work. In the winter, I try to keep a pair of cheap gloves in the purse for driving (when the steering wheel is cold) but sometimes I juts leave them in the car.

I'm not one for overly big bags but ones that are medium sized and with a shoulder strap. It's just easier for me to carry my things around.

I got to think about what you carry in your bags during the work week because I see ladies on the subway with 2 huge bags of stuff then their purses or handbags.

Here's my list:
wallet
blackberry (work)
IPhone
makeup bag
keys
extra shoes or sneakers (if heels begin to bother me)
gym clothes (although I take extra clothes to work at the beginning of the week)
bike lock
Kindle or book
gum
lots of loose change (sometimes my bag weighs a ton)
