A4 paper is the standard size paper in our printers and photocopiers here in Australia (It is a bit longer than the "letter" size)

Congratulations! That must be awesome to realize that your wardrobe is much more complete/better off than you thought. It sounds like it's making a narrower shopping focus easier to manage.

I'm also trying to limit myself to a narrower list of items - I realize I tend to buy too many items that are similar to what I already own. Since browsing YLF I've been trying to identify and fill in "gaps" (mostly accessories or more colorful items) that will work with my existing wardrobe.

That's odd. My friend from Australia came up with a list of foods she didn't like, that she also likened to being over an A4 page long. Must be a standard Aussie reference point, hehe.

What an inspiring and intriguing post. I am actually more or less on an unexpected shopping ban from now on. I'm going to have to put my quest for dresses on hold until next year. I am only making exceptions for two things: high-waisted skinnies (because I'm desperately in need right now with nothing else to tuck into boots, and I found a pair for $10, hehe), and comfy summer shoes (so I don't suffer another warm season in agony like last year). You're right: when I really sit back and think about it, there is really nothing I "need" in my wardrobe (except what I mentioned already).

When I'm on a shopping ban I just stop looking at clothes. Stop surfing websites, stop looking into store windows. As long as I'm blissfully unaware of what is out there, I don't feel so bad. Unfortunately it also means not looking at YLF so much, which I just can't do! Might have to spend some time away from the forum though. Sigh.

Thanks Loulou. It just amused me that when I approached my closet in this way it was quite different from the usual "weeding out" attitude.

What a thought provoking post. On reflection (to my amazement) i've come to realise i also have pretty much all i need in my wardrobe. There are still a fair few wants, as always! x

Here in Australia we're enduring the bushfire season so it occurred to me to make a list of what I'd regard as wardrobe essentials if I had to start again, as so many others are having to do.
I came up with an A4-page list and, when I reviewed it, to my amazement, I actually had everything on the list. We always think there are gaps in our wardrobes, right? And of course there are in mine for those "would love to have" pieces (no handmade lace or skinny jeans), but I don't actually *need* any new clothes or accessories.
Naturally, some of what's there isn't up-to-the-minute, so encouraged by Angie and the Forum, I've taken up the hems of three skirts to knee-length and resolved to think younger in how I put outfits together (I'm self-consciously 53). The not-fitted black jacket can be reworked as a boyfriend jacket with jeans, the animal print top bought for evenings can go under the denim jacket, I can get out the pearls for a drop of irony with the abstract-print skirt - and how could I have forgotten that pretty peony-print top, it goes with everything!
I won't be not shopping this year - Angie is (as always) right about the need for some fun - but without being overly recessionista about it, I will be shopping with a list so I can target particular items that will complement my newly discovered wardrobe.
