Yes, of course, but I still don't see why that means frumpy. Because if it does I am Queen of Frump Mountain.

IK, I agree - but I also think my tolerance level has changed. Things that used to feel fine now feel uncomfy, like layers and belts. My size has not changed but I am much more easily annoyed by things that weren't an issue before. Does that make sense?

I like that sweater for you. You can easily mitigate color concerns with a bolder colored bottom, accessories, etc. I believe this sweater would hang more like a tunic on us shorter-waisted gals.

I'm not sure why comfortable dressing is equated with frumpy.

I demand everything I wear be comfortable. if it isn't, it goes.

Yes, I think there is a sophisticated UWP and this is you. The Vince top is a perfect example. This may be new territory, but it's beautiful new territory.

Thank you all so much! First I want to say that by no means did I intend to imply that neutrals are frumpy! I see much the opposite. But neutrals plus the kind of comfort I dream of are not easy for me to find in styles I like. I'm no good at adding interest to basics nor do I want to take the time.

You are also totally correct - change of career, lack of exercise, crazy schedule, midlife crisis, need to look somewhat conservative for work - all of these things are adding up to less effort on my part and therefore perceived frump?

Is there such a thing as sophisticated UWP? And what would she wear?

Una, I am attracted to that piece too, but the color isn't my best either, and I don't look nearly as fab in those styles as ladies like you and Dana who have more IT builds.

I am appreciating that I can be attracted to pieces even if they're not my best. In this case, I think the cut if that sweater would be perfect on you, if not the color.

I don't see this as a descent into frumpdom at all. Perhaps a softening of your more UWP look? Pair this with your signature boots and skinnies and the result will be the opposite of frump.

That is a beautiful sweater, the drape in back especially catches my eye. Could it be that nature is playing a part in your shift, as the weather chills and there are no more bright displays of color? Seems natural. I turn to neutrals more at this time of year too, something psychological and comforting about them.

Maybe part of the draw is the luscious name of that color: Heather Maple. Have some pancakes and mull it over.

Does this fear of 'frumpville' have a deeper meaning? These fears in my life usually went along some major change. I know you have had a job change but my gut tells me there is something else going on. Children growing up, changes in body shape as we age, medical issues, all of these affected me as they happened. And still do.

A sweater like that in cream might suit your coloring better. Or in a subdued tone, like a darkish red, purple or green. It is true that brights really work very well against your skin, but neutral colors do not make an item frumpy! And that's a beautiful sweater.

Una, we're all different when it comes to pattern and colour. What seems fabulous to one woman might feel garish and eyewatering to another.

I'm personally drawn to desaturated colour palettes, and not just in clothing. I prefer it in architecture, landscapes, and art. I like shades of grey. I like the odd shot of colour, but in small doses. In clothing, that usually means a colourful accessory. In a landscape, it could be something like a red phone box on a grey London street scene. I don't consider myself frumpy at all. It's just a personal preference. I also don't think that women who wear bright colours or wild patterns necessarily look bad, either -- I get that they prefer that sort of thing, and it suits their personality.

I also don't totally buy into the "it's not your colour" thing. I think there are a few "bad" colours for certain people (for example, I know I look terrible in lemon yellow), and a few strikingly "good" ones too (certain shades of olive make my skin tone look great), but most colours are somewhere in between.
A neutral, taupe-y top might not be your best colour ever, or it might look better on you than you think.

I am smiling at your continued fear of falling into frump. I think we need to explore this fear further. Did you have a frumpy past life perhaps? Because unless you are hiding something you are pretty much as far from frump as you could be.

Why exactly do you think you are sliding into frumpville?

This is a very classic basic sweater. I don't think this kind of taupe is easy for olive-skinned folks to wear, but you could always wear a scarf if it doesn't come in other colors.

In the past few months, I've seen a TON of sweaters and other stuff in gray and similar neutrals, so part of it is a reaction to what is out there. The style of that sweater is very *Una* to me, so I'm sure that is part of the pull.

I don't buy it either! Your lifestyle has changed and you're making sartorial decisions based on a different set of needs. It's hard to work out how to look and feel stylish when your world shifts, but I'm confident you'll continue to knock our socks off.

I suspect your attraction to a more neutral palette is influenced by what you're seeing in stores, on blogs, etc. I used to be drawn to lots of color, but am finding myself pulled in the direction of black, charcoal, navy and burgundy. These colors are everywhere right now. I will admit to having a predisposition to this palette. I'm not sure what's going to happen when spring rolls around and we start seeing blush pink and sky blue on everything--neither of which colors I have ever liked.

It is a beautiful sweater. You are right that the color probably wouldn't look good on you. There is nothing wrong with your tastes changing. Just admire it on someone else.

I am suddenly finding myself attracted to neutrals that not only never interested me, but don't really suit me. I am eying cozy sweaters in subdued tones like this:

http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/vi.....fined_25_C

Is this all part of my downward slide into frumpville? Will wearing neutrals make my life easier?

ETA: I am not saying neutrals are frumpy at all - just that the colors I'm wanting are generally no good on me and adding to that, the styles are all about comfort.
