I was going to suggest monk strap oxfords like Roberta! There are quite a few '90s versions available.

Good luck, Chris!

I was never able to wear ballerinas because they were always so uncomfortably flat, but I just got this pair that have little wedge that makes all the difference.

I have a few pairs of loafers that I rarely wear, because the heels always slip. My happy find last year was monk strap shoes, which come up higher over the foot and feel secure.

They are not common, but I love my two pairs and wear them a lot.

thanks jaileen .... I want a darker sole for the style I prefer, i but I will definitely look at that brand.

Thanks Sisi ... if by "dressy slipon" you mean something like the find below, I already have this one in two colors but the soles are quite thin and I can't wear them for more than breif periods of time. I haven't seen something like this with a thicker sole.

SarahDB - the glove flat idea is a good one, but that style along with ballet flats, smoking slippers, driving moccasins, sneakerinas, seem to always have soles that are too thin to be comfortable on my fussy feet. Monk strap shoes are more likely to have a thicker sole - I'll have to keep an eye open for them. I've always like that style but don't see them often these days.

Carol, yes I'm having good luck with sneakers lately, in fact just go the leopard ones below. It's loafers that are hard for me to find.

MsMary, I too have been very happy with vionic shoes of all types for quite a few years, but the Vionic Cleo loafer I showed above (very similar to yours), just did not fit right.

I have a couple pairs of these FitFlops, in navy and in silver. For me, they would be a substitute for loafers. I could wear them with nice pants or a dress, or jeans, of course.

https://www.zappos.com/kratos/.....product/97

Some of the leopard print sneakers that are coming out are pretty cool, if you get a pair that is stylish enough!

Have you tried a glove flat? The higher vamp might make them more secure than ballet flats?

Or a monk-strap style? Again I'm thinking the buckle closure might make them more secure than a slip on loafer, without introducing laces like the oxfords you don't care for.

The sneakerina trend could be worth investigating too, maybe?

Dressy slipons? I had a pair of blue velvet slipons that were beautiful and super comfortable. I wore them to the ground and regret not having photographed them before tossing.

I've been striking out badly trying to find some fairly classic but modern loafers in black and/ or brown. (would love to find BOTH colors) They must have very thick sole cushioning esp under the ball of the foot, good arch support , and a low heel. A lug sole that's not too thick is fine. I was hoping for a modern classic or slightly trendy look. The usual issue is that when the heel area fits well the shoe is too short and my big toe hits the front; or the big toe works and the heel slips. Insoles/inserts do not usually resolve the problem. I've tried heel inserts but either the heel still slips, or the heel does not slip butt the fit is thrown off somewhere else.

I would wear these in spring/fall with straight leg or flare/bootcut jeans/pants which are all I wear for bottoms these days. I wear sneakers a lot, mostly "fashion sneakers" but occasionally want the more polished look of a loafer. Sandals are also good, once we get to true summer.

What other shoe styles would you consider to fill a similar role in your own wardrobe? I'm not a fan of oxfords or Maryjane's, and ballet flats usually have the same fit issue as loafers. Backless shoes like mules don't stay on my feet. Sneakers are good. Boots are good too but I don't want to wear them in warmer months, although maybe I should consider some perforated/openweave styles.

The finds are most of the ones I've tried and rejected. Even Vionic and Clarks which are go-tos for me in general are not working.

The last find is the Sam Edelman Lorraine which I've had for a few years but even with an added superfeet insole the soles feel too thin now, and I'm tired of the style.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

p.s. these are mostly low or modestly priced brands, but I'm willing to try higher priced ones.
