I’ve had such a hard time finding lovers that fit too, Chris, so I empathize. To date, these loafers from Dansko have been the only ones that have worked and I find them oh-so comfortable.

That’s so great that you found what you wanted and needed. Yay for local shoe stores! I have been supporting some of those in the past few years as well as my favourite online site Styletread (which I feel is similar to Zappos or DSW). The online site has greater choice but I feel bad if I have to return as it’s a 3-hour flight to send them back there to Australia.

So ... the day after I wrote this post I went to one of the only two shoe stores anywhere near me. It carries european brands, mostly "comfort shoes". I've had mixed results there so don't go that often. Well, the shoe gods were smiling on me that day!

I found both brown and black loafers! The brown suede penny loafers are a new-to-me Italian brand Bussola (made in Vietnam), and were on sale. I did need to replace the insole with a superfeet one but now they are really comfortable. The black ones are Naot, which is an Israeli brand I've owned once before. This style is a ittle less classic with the toe area suede and the rest a flat leather. I am already wearing both a bit, and will do so for another month or two before sandal weather hits. (I am liking dark colors this spring).

I went through 10 pr of black ones and 9 brown ones before I found ones that worked I will be going back to that store at the START of future footwear hunting Plus, I will consider monkstrap styles!

Thanks for all the great inputs.

Sungtiger, good suggestions but Rothy's shoes don't have enough sole cushioning for me, and mules/slingbacks stay on my feet so rarely that I don't usually bother looking at them.

Star - hmm a clog style with a back strap ... as stated to Suntiger the slingback style almost never stay on my feet, so I don't usually try them.

I Struggle with any sort of transitional shoes, since my heels are so narrow. About 6 years ago, I had some Clarks loafers that worked ok (in narrow), but didn't try to replace them once worn out.
Right now the only transitional shoes I have are Rothys pointy Maryjanes, sneakers, and low heeled sandal booties. I wear the sandal booties most of the time, cause the Maryjanes are too flat for my trousers and I don't wear sneakers except for exercize/travel. I still wear booties (often cognac) on colder days, but soon I'll be in sandals full time. If I had more transitional weather, I'd look for mules or slingbacks.

I have sort of narrow feet with narrow heels. Today I'm wearing Aetrex lace-up leather shoes, with added green arch-support insoles. The shoes look clunky but they're comfortable. I can walk or stand on my feet a lot, no problem. I've also stuck the same kind of insoles inside camp mocs (land version of boat shoes) that were slightly too wide but had a high enough toe box.

I also like good sneakers. I might try monk-strap shoes if I see them. I do have some boots, and some low-heeled slingbacks.

I will admit that fashion-wise I don't have high expectations for what I wear on my feet. Mostly I try to get dark colors. Best of luck finding shoes that work for you!

Suz I'm with you in that heel grips have never worked for me either, but a full-sized insole (udually a thin one) can sometimes fix a loose heel. It's impossible to predict when it will/won't work so I always try. I have a similar memory of my grandmother talking about shoes with front/heel in different sizing which she apparently needed. I don't recall that being a possibility in my lifetime :-)

L'Abelle, thanks, and boat shoes could be ok but the thin soles you describe seem to be a "feature" of that style and are too tthin to work for me except as house shoes and sometimes not even that.

doggeh lover - great suggestion, thanks! I I did a quick search on "shoes with very thick soles" and some of the results are NOT thick enough although some could be. Lots of good info on this site, thanks for the reminder!

What about boat shoes? They look similar to a loafer, but the leather/suede is softer and there is a lace that wraps around the heel and sides to tighten it onto the foot and tie at the front.

When I was boating often, I found that my own boat shoes didn't stand up to a full shore excursion with hours of walking on paved roads; not cushioning or supportive enough, so my feet were sore at the end of the day. But last summer when they started trending, I began wearing them to work. I was surprised to discover they were plenty supportive enough for a day standing on hard hospital floors.

People might suggest heel grips...and apparently, they do work for some. I have never found them to work on me whatsoever.

What does sometimes work is an insole. It's a bit paradoxical because it is lifting the heel higher in the shoe-- you would think that would make it pop out more, and with most styles I've tried, that is true. But other times, it keeps the rest of the foot in place just enough to make it work.

My mother (who also had this problem) tells me that in the old days, you could buy shoes in heel widths (as well as overall width or front of shoe width.)

Thanks RobinF! In general I just don't like the look of any maryjanes. Can't quite fiture out why but I've stopped fighting it. Suz's suggestion of a strap that goes at an angle might work though. You are right that a higher vamp stays on better, but my real issue is that the heel slips when the rest of the shoe fits so a higher vamp generally does not fix that.

That sounds frustrating! I was going to suggest mary janes until I saw you don't want those. Have you considered the mary jane style sneakers? They could be different enough from your current sneakers to feel fresh. The monk straps are cute and the higher vamp flats. I do find that a higher vamp stays on better in general, no matter the style.

Anchie, what a good idea! Maybe I can find something similar to check out.

Thanks Angie! will definiltye check out monk strap styules.

Thanks Lisa!

Thanks Suz. Franco Sarto is a brand I always look at and as you suggest sometimes one style will work where another one does not. I have a pair of FS lug sole zip ankle boots that are super comfy. I too have some Naturalizer slingbacks that work pretty well despite that style usually being a bad fit for me. Hmm...a maryjane with an angled strap just might be ok.

Bijou - thanks and lighter colored boots are a great idea. This time of year I'm so tired of wearing nothing but boots for 4-5 months that I want nothing to do with them but a lighter color/lighter fabrication might be just the trick.

Chris, I too have fussy feet and find the most comfortable footwear for me is either boots or sneakers. These are the boots that I wear in Spring and Autumn in Australia (so warmer temps that you) and they are very comfortable. I find a lighter colour makes to boot look less heavy.

Though my feet are not as narrow as yours, my heels are narrow, so I suffer from one of your problems. I like loafers and slipper flats, but it's a rare, rare pair that stay on my foot. Ditto traditional pumps with low vamps, and slingbacks, and ballet flats (which are too flat for my feet anyway.)

However....persistence does pay off. I currently own one pair of loafers (Franco Sarto) that magically stay on my foot and one pair of slingbacks (Naturalizer) that also work.

I'm fortunate in that I do like oxfords. Because sneakers are great (and I'm grateful they are still considered stylish) but a person does get tired of them. I'd love love love to have more slip-on options!

I really like the idea of a monk strap shoe. For dressier options you might look for Mary Janes that are not true Mary Janes, i.e. the strap goes across diagonally, which gives a different look.

For mayself, I'm just going to continue to try on any shoe I see that I really like in the hope I might get lucky!

I was going to suggest monk strap oxfords like Roberta! There are quite a few '90s versions available.

Good luck, Chris!

I was never able to wear ballerinas because they were always so uncomfortably flat, but I just got this pair that have little wedge that makes all the difference.

I have a few pairs of loafers that I rarely wear, because the heels always slip. My happy find last year was monk strap shoes, which come up higher over the foot and feel secure.

They are not common, but I love my two pairs and wear them a lot.

thanks jaileen .... I want a darker sole for the style I prefer, i but I will definitely look at that brand.

Thanks Sisi ... if by "dressy slipon" you mean something like the find below, I already have this one in two colors but the soles are quite thin and I can't wear them for more than breif periods of time. I haven't seen something like this with a thicker sole.

SarahDB - the glove flat idea is a good one, but that style along with ballet flats, smoking slippers, driving moccasins, sneakerinas, seem to always have soles that are too thin to be comfortable on my fussy feet. Monk strap shoes are more likely to have a thicker sole - I'll have to keep an eye open for them. I've always like that style but don't see them often these days.

Carol, yes I'm having good luck with sneakers lately, in fact just go the leopard ones below. It's loafers that are hard for me to find.

MsMary, I too have been very happy with vionic shoes of all types for quite a few years, but the Vionic Cleo loafer I showed above (very similar to yours), just did not fit right.
