I actually had to do this. I had some bags packed in case we were evacuated due to the Rim Fire this past summer, it got very close but unlike some of my friends a few miles away I was never evacuated.

I had my Rag & Bone Newbury boots (wear them all the time), a pair of low heeled booties from Vintage Shoe Co. and some True Religion Cameron boyfriend jeans. Oh and my favorite Zara moto jacket.

I can't think of much in my main closet that couldn't be replaced. I guess it would have to be my two pairs of knee high boots because those took me years to find and probably wouldn't be easily replaced. After that I'd probably grab whatever pair of jeans were fitting best and a warm sweater and booties so that I'd be warm and comfortable the next day while shopping to replace my clothes!

1. My Moulin Rouge souvenir shirt, from the show in Paris. It is black, fitted jersey, long-sleeve, with the name and the windmill outlined in Swarovski crystals, and I wear it all the time. It reminds me of one of the most magical evenings I have ever experienced I am going to cry the day I it falls apart. They only have the short-sleeved version on their website now.

2. My pave diamond ring. It has a sort of fleur-de-lis shape, and it pretty much looks great with everything.

3. My pearls: necklaces and stud earrings. I wear the earrings nearly every day, and the necklaces at least twice a week.

4. My patent leather Orla Kiely clutch. It is small, yet it holds everything I need it to. And it matches pretty much everything I own.

5. My black Cole Haan Sharapova oxford heels. I regretted not buying them when I first saw them, and for two years, they were a HEWI. I was sniped on eBay, twice, before winning a brand new pair.

The things I'd grab to save aren't things I'd wear, but things I'd be devastated to lose:

My paternal great-grandmother's wedding set, my maternal great-grandmother's brooch, my daddy's leather jacket, and my grandma's crushed velvet coat from the 60s. I'd put on my 505s, my Frye Veronica shorties, a tee, a Portafino blouse, and an oversized cowlneck sweater over it all.

The big benefit of the fact that most of my wardrobe is thrifted is that I wouldn't be devastated about or bankrupted by replacing it.

I own very few pieces of jewelry and wear most of my better pieces (rolex and engagement ring) every day, so I would not go for the jewelry. I would save my burberry coat (it's new and the most expensive piece of clothing I own) as well as my shoes. I have narrow feet and have a hard time finding shoes I like that fit.

I'd probably need both hands to rescue a dozing senior kitty (Miss Blanche DuBois) who likes to hide under the hanging clothes, so all I'd have is a cream-colored fur coat ;-).

I was thinking about this over the weekend because we'll probably have another big earthquake while I'm living in SF. First I was thinking that I should have pajamas close to the bed even if I don't sleep in them, in case I need to evacuate the house in the middle of the night. And then I was wondering what things I'd save, either a practical plan or, like you said, which things I'd want to grab even if it wasn't the best plan.

In middle school, I went to a nerd camp (CTY) where we stayed in co-ed college dorms. There was a fire alarm in the middle of the night and I woke up very disoriented and couldn't find my glasses. And my room was a complete mess (as happens when you put a messy 11-year-old in a dorm single with no parents around!) and without my glasses I couldn't find my bathrobe or even my longer sleep shirt. I'm not sure why I didn't just grab jeans or a towel or anything - totally disoriented - but I went outside in just my short tshirt and underwear. Awkward, but I think I was too sleepy to really notice.

@ Laura - HAHA; that reminds me of my dorm too! There was an actual fire that burnt up where I used to stay the year after I moved out - some moron decided to get rid of cardboard boxes in the oven by burning them up.

Lyn, that reminds me of the dorm I lived in when I spent a semester in Australia in college - they had this trigger-happy fire alarm system that went off all the time; basically all the time anyone dared to cook something and there was even a hint of smoke or steam. Regulations meant that all of us had to troop out to in front of the building and wait for the fire brigade to check the whole place before they'd let us back in. Happened several times in the middle of the night, and even in reasonably mild Canberra I got quite chilly standing there in my PJs.

I agree with those that say in the case of a real emergency, I'd be worrying about a) my DH and b) paperwork and electronics, not clothes.

If for some reason I had to keep only 5 items from my current wardrobe, in some other kind of crisis, I suppose I would try to come up with a FFBO type outfit - jeans, a top, a jacket/sweater, and a couple pairs of decent shoes/boots.

Last time there was a fire in my building, I grabbed my phone on my night stand and my blankie. Took my wallet on the way out.

Everything else can be replaced. I guess if it was cold, I'd grab a jacket.

The last time there was a fire alarm (not a real fire like the time there was actual smoke) - I put on jeans and a t-shirt and wore comfy boots and the warmest jacket I had - I figured I'd be standing outside for a bit. I didn't think of the clothes that I really valued because these things can be replaced (although difficult); I guess in a situation like a fire I'd think of myself first :)

But the top five irreplaceable things in my closet are:
1. Burberry trench (gift from godfather)
2. Burberry belt (vintage)
3. Eva Franco glasses dress
4. Kate Spade red lace dress
5. Anthropologie blazer w/ dotty lining

Hmm. I don't keep my jewellery in my closet but if I did I'd grab the necklace my parents got me for my PhD graduation, my grandmother's wedding ring, a silver bracelet with little blue beads that I've had since I was a kid, and a couple of my favorite pairs of earrings.

As for my actual closet, I think it would have to be my two pairs of Doc Martens, my tall black boots, my current favorite pair of jeans, and...? It's kind of weird to think that even though I have way too many clothes I can't really imagine any of them that I love that much. Maybe I'd add my packable down jacket or the deep red trench that my grandmother gave me.

I will stick to cloth items and junk jewelry and shoes/purses, for the sake of the exercise. I wouldn't actually try to save any of it, if confronted by fire. I'd be wondering if I could get away with a medium sized painting in addition to my electronics, a small painting, wallet, and meds. Also, I'm trusting that I don't have to carry the dog out... Maybe I should just park a cart by the front door...?

Ok. I think #1 on my closet save list has to be my queen-mum Gucci purse, a gift from my dad. The purse essentially tells my life story.

#2 would be my red "origami" dress. It's my best, most versatile dress, and irreplaceable.

#3 would be my funky Marc Jacobs, denim sandals, to go with. Got to save one thing Marc.

#4 would be my faux, wrap jersey dress with turquoise and tan tribal/art deco pattern. Another extremely useful, irreplaceable dress.

#5 would be a fringy metal necklace. I guess I should save the $$$ hipster one over the cheapie from Rainbow... but the Rainbow one is very dramatic... Hmm. This probably a clue as to how to clear out my junk jewelry drawer...

Mentally I have a hard time doing this exercise, because my hanging closet is in one bedroom and my chest of drawers with everything that's folded, my jewelry, etc., is in the other. Honestly, I'd probably be practical -grab a pair of well fitting jeans, a knit top and a warm cardigan, and then any valuable or family jewelry. None of my clothes are particularly irreplaceable, and my wedding dress is in a storage box in the garage.

Nothing sentimental. My criteria would be items that actually fit. Those items that were hardest to find, but which are wardrobe workhorses I rely on all the time. That would include my ponte knit skinnies, LOFT jean jacket, and probably a bunch of shoes. I'll throw in the AT Legacy blouses. And Theory charcoal blazer.

Only 5? Hmm. I guess 4 out of my 5 will be tall boots, since it's going on 6 years on the dang hunt and still no luck.

This did happen to a member here a few years ago (we all sent her some stuff to get back on her feet and at least dressed for work the next week.)
I'm of a split mind. Part of me would want one or 2 complete outfits - that's the logical part. My other side would want my treasures - the emotional side of me. We'll go with the emotional side.
Allsaints shearling lined leather jacket (too awesome to leave behind)
MuuBaa blush leather jacket (too awesome and not easily found)
the shoes in my profile picture (not practical, but again totally awesome and not found)
Frye Julia knee high grey boots (again, awesome and irreplaceable)
a pair of jeans but I can't decide between my TR Cameron's or Disco Billy's

EDIT: and I might leave the jeans if it could mean grabbing my jewelry rack wholesale, kit and kaboodle. (after all it would take longer to paw through it than to grab the whole thing off the wall and run;))

Lisa, that is such an awesome answer! I can just imagine there I'd be standing outside, while my closet burns, in my uber ratty-tattered sweats (that I lounge around the house and sleep in) with a lump of leather, jewelry, and pucci print held in my arms, while you'd be patiently waiting outside for the fire department looking absolutely fab because you grabbed an entire outfit

A great question, my sentimental items and jewelry are not in my main closet but they would be the items I would want to save over anything else. Jewelry passed down from family and from my wedding would be top of my list. So are pieces I've picked up from traveling and cannot easily replace (a sweatercoat from Italy, a poncho from Portugal, a silk scarf from France, and my jewelry, would round out my 5 items).

However, the question was what to grab from the main closet. Well...looking in my main closet, I would save one outfit, and it would be made out of my favorite pieces from this season, this way I would be well dressed, even if I only had that one outfit I saved.

So I would grab my favorite pieces this season: brown tall boots, skinny jeans, layering LS T, and my tan printed poncho. That's four pieces, which leaves me room to grab my favorite handbag to finish off the look.

Thanks for getting me thinking!

I'm glad you asked because I never thought about trying to save wardrobe items in the event of a fire. After making sure all family members are safely out of the house, I plan to grab the family pets and the photo albums, time permitting. Now I realize that I'd also try to save the wedding band and necklaces I inherited from my mother and grandmother.

Funny exercise! Irreplaceability is a good criterium. I would also take the chance of letting all my items in so-so colors burn down and save those in my best colors:

1) Medium brown plaid pants suit by L'Altramoda: composed by a cropped jacket with a ribbon at the back and low-waist palazzo pants is pretty unique and very flattering on me.

2) Rust double-breasted fine-knit jacket with wide chiffon collar: another unique piece and it also has sentimental value because my husband pointed this out to me when we were shopping together.

3) Red-orange linen maxi dress by Compagnia Italiana: this looks simply stunning on me.

4) Black evening pants by MaxMara: these are not irreplaceable, but they were quite expensive, so...

5) Brick red camisole with sheer panel by Intimissimi: this still has the price tag on, so I would like to have a chance to wear it. It's also in a hard-to find very flattering color.

I store my shoes and coats somewhere else, otherwise the list would look different of course.

Neel, Thanks! ..and I totally hear you on saving family jewelry! I have my grandmother's engagement ring and it is most definitely the number one item I'd save (along with caricatures of my parents and grandparents done in the 1950's). Since those items aren't stored in my bedroom closet I exempted them from this "personal thought challenge."

I love all your outfits!! I am not sure which one is my favorite! You are one fashion loving girl and you have such beautiful pieces to actually save!!

As about me ... I'll only save my gold fine jewellery handed down by my mum. Everything else is replaceable.

I'm a fan of random thought exercises so thought I'd challenge others to answer this question:

If there was a fire that was contained to your closet but you had time to save only 5 things from your closet, what would they be and why did you choose them?

It's a similar question to that posed on http://theburninghouse.com which asks you to photograph and post what you'd save if your house was burning down.

For this thought exercise, I'm asking it purely in the realm of your main closet, that contains the bulk of your wardrobe. So, for example, I have some sentimental pieces that I keep in a closet in my office and elsewhere. So I would not include anything from those locations.

I do, however, keep a jewelry armoire in my walk-in bedroom closet, so any jewelry contained in it would qualify as "save-able."

I actually had a harder time with this than I thought I would. My criteria for what I'd save was that it be either incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to replace (so I couldn't take insurance money and just go easily buy a new one) and/or have sentimental value.

So here's my 5 along with some photos of how I've worn them.

1. Vintage Elsa Perretti for Tiffany & Co. Sterling Scorpion necklace. I'd save it because it took me over a decade to finally get my hands on one. She made it in the late 70's and early 80s and it's been out of production since then. I used to deal antique and vintage jewelry and this is one of her very rare pieces. So it immediately made the top of my "rescue" list.

2. Vintage early prototype Elsa Perretti for Tiffany sterling snake necklace (gee, can you tell I like Elsa's early work?) This too is a really rare piece. It was a 1970's early prototype for the snake necklace she produced for Tiffany in the early 80s, which they've recently reissued). I'd save it because I could never replace it and I love to wear it often.

3. Christopher Kiodo for DSquared2 leather motorcycle jacket with shearling collar. I'd save it for two reasons, it has enormous sentimental value to me and it's not something you can get again (except maybe aftermarket/used if you got lucky). Kiodo designed several moto jackets for DSquared a couple of years ago and once they were sold, that was it.

4. My other Christopher Kiodo DSquared2 leather motorcycle jacket. This one has massive industrial studs along the neck and sleeves. Saved for the same reasons as above.

5. My vintage 60's Emilio Pucci dress. (no picture of that one provided because I haven't worn it in the last year or so but I'd never get rid of it and I'd definitely save it). It's very sentimental to me. It reminds me both of when I was a vintage dealer and when I first met my boyfriend of 10 years (it was an often worn date night dress!)

So how about you guys? What would you rescue and why? (and post some photos of your key "rescue" items. I'd love to see and hear about what others would save).

...and, boy, do I really hope this has never actually happened to anyone here IRL! I have a friend it happened to and it was really devastating, but thankfully he had insurance and did save some important family pieces from his home as he was getting his family out).
