I find buttons problematic as a rule-even if the garment is loose! I'd say look for ones that have a flap over the buttons at the least-like the Kamm ones.

I feel your frustration. My weight gain seems to go to my middle. Darn cortisol. You are right 5 lbs can make or break a decision. I do think the style of these may be more of an issue than the slight weight gain. As other have noticed, the button front with the heavier fabric may not be the best design combo. I advise returning them. Imagine how sad you would feel to learn that the gaping had nothing to do with your weight.

I would return these and keep looking. There will be more olive for fall. You could try wearing them around the house for a few hours to see if they loosen up. My experience is that, if they are washable, they will shrink a little and be tighter, being cotton.

Well these are great for those times when you are standing! Lisap is right. I do have the Jesse Kamm Sailor Pants. The Kamm Pants have a flap over the buttons and there are more buttons. Also, the material molds to your body after time. Suz also might have a point about body type. I have a pear shape and these pants are made for me. Finally, fashion is in my favour!
That is my long winded way of saying that I don`t have a problem with gaping buttons.
There are lots of great pants out there for you. I think this is a design flaw. You deserve better.

Remember in the olden days they would always have a chair or bench in the dressing room? It's good to sit down in clothes because people expand an average of 4 inches. That goes for shirts, too.

I don't have the link but recently read an article about ease for plus sizes and it seems that plus sizes can require even more than that. It was an interesting article with photos of the author/sewist that illustrated this big difference between standing and sitting.

I would return and keep trying to get my regular size. I struggle with the button fly jeans and pants. I've tried several and I just don't want to be bothered with the potential gapping when sitting or if I eat dessert.

I have the J.Crew version of these pants in Loden and I highly recommend them. Look way better in person, fit great and they are so comfy. Took my normal J. Crew size. Currently 40% off in stores today.

So frustrating! Like Runs with Scissors, I was going to suggest looking for a zip-fly version. My Madewell wide-legs (very similar to the Emmett, but with pin-tucked front seams) from a couple years ago are zip-fly, as are the Everlane Wide Legs, another Kamm Pant knock-off. I think Suz is right that this style is generally more forgiving on those with pear tendencies and trickier for apple types, but not impossible. I bet there's a pair out there that will work better for you.

Sterling, I have the EXACT same problem with stress-related weight settling in the midsection, perfect fit while standing and pinchy misery while sitting. I did experiment with getting small triangular bits of elastic sewn in some waistbands but decided it was easier to wear dresses.

I'm joining everyone else and advising return this size. To be honest, they should have fit more than four buttons up the front in a high waist, and I'll bet they may gap when sitting even in a more relaxed size.

But definitely try in bigger sizes when they restock, if you love them this much. How about trying the brand's own website for more size choices?

if you live close to a Nordies store, i'd return in person...BUT, i'd ask a SA to check the store inventory and if your size is available in any store, have them all the store to insure they have it, and then have it sent....

just as an FYI...online inventory is not the exact same as store inventory, for example if there is 1 or 2 pieces left in a size in the entire chain, on line that size will usally show as not available because the retailer does not want to disappoint the customer in case the store can not actually find the garment. but a good SA will call the store showing the size on hand and have them actual search for it, and then hold it and ship it to you....

I have to be honest with you. With that style, I would not be confident that the buttons would not gap even if the size were correct. Does that make sense? It might be fine, but it might not. On fitted items, buttons tend to gap. I would hate for you to lose the weight and discover that the pants still don’t work. I would send them back.

I bought these. I adore them. They are the perfect style and color to add to my summer/fall wardrobe. I have a lot of pieces already in my wardrobe that coordinate with them perfectly.

They were on sale at Nordstroms. My current size was not available. I bought one size down from what I am currently wearing. My weight fluctuates five pounds and I am up five-six pounds due to four months of work stress. I gain/lose weight from my waistline so all five pounds tend to settle around my waist.

These pants fit perfectly while standing up. Perfectly. Then I remembered I spend 99 % of my time sitting down at a desk. I sat down on the bed. The buttons gap! There are only four buttons and they gap!

I hadn't thought about the buttons! What is acceptable? What is not acceptable? Will the pants give? They are sturdy cotton.

I am torn between love and the fact that they can't be worn. That goes against my stated shopping goals for 2019. I could tell myself I'll lose the weight, but when? I already have four pair of pants in my wardrobe that have been "put aside" due to the five pound weight gain. Do I want to put another pair in that same category?

I am confused and could use your thoughts.
