My weight gain seems to go to my middle. Darn cortisol. You are right 5 lbs can make or break a decision. I do think the style of these may be more of an issue than the slight weight gain. As other have noticed, the button front with the heavier fabric may not be the best design combo. I advise returning them. My Madewell wide-legs (very similar to the Emmett, but with pin-tucked front seams) from a couple years ago are zip-fly, as are the Everlane Wide Legs, another Kamm Pant knock-off. I think <b>Suz </b>is right that this style is generally more forgiving on those with pear tendencies and trickier for apple types, but not impossible.
