What has helped me find my way is keeping photo's of looks I love with the articles of clothing that I know will fit my life and body shape. That way I sort of have a guide to follow when I shop.

Lynn, I identify with a lot of what you said (fun, creative, adventurous)! Mostly I get confused over definitions of things like "trendy," or "urban."

Kappy, I'm bookmarking for later, too! I can just see myself asking the exact same questions in a year's time, and everyone who's posted has been immensely helpful.

Vix, that's a really interesting approach, too! And it's a lot like Angie's categories, only you choose each word yourself. :D

Ok, here's my first go at this. Looking over my list, I've come up with Utilitarian Fashionista. Utilitarian for my love of military/rugged elements like leather, button-front shirts, blazers, boots, and hardware; Fashionista for my inner need to keep a feminine silhouette, have fun with my clothes, shop regularly, and add quirky elements of color and pattern.

Rae, I've been thinking some more on this; the impression I get from your photos would include fun, hip, creative, playful, adventurous. I'm not sure if these agree with your own persona, they are just the vibe that I personally get from your outfits. I'm loving following this thread :).

It was funny to see your list before your calf-length skirt photo post because I guess I've mostly seen your weekend wear which is more rugged/utilitarian chic (for lack of a better phrase!) and some of your words surprised me.

Now it all makes more sense. ;)

I've plugged the Style Statement book before (not that I bought it or did the exercises!) and lists like you and Aida have are very much part of its process. You may find it interesting to poke around the book's related site:

http://www.stylestatement.com/

[StSt makes you boil things down into 2 words ("the first word represents your foundation, your 80%. The second word, your 20%, is what motivates and distinguishes you").]

I think it's kind of fun/freeing/focusing to play around with the 2 words. I mean I'm basically drawn to modern classic and selective vintage items but that first category is REALLY broad. I found it helpful to do a Cliff Notes version of StSt just to help me analyze which MC elements I liked and how I should put stuff together.

You *do* have lots of tougher elements on your list, and if you find you like to keep those separate from your more retro/womanly looks, splitting them out from each other might help you label your various styles.

BUT if you'd like to bring more of one into the other then you can always just say, "OK, I feel best when my look is 80% Femme and 20% Rugged, so I'll buy/combine things to make that happen." [Obviously you can do better than me with these terms!]

Keep us posted....

Yes, the list helped a lot (and also made me realize that I need to add more non-red color)! It's funny, I'm a pretty top-down thinker -- I was one of those people who actually outlined papers before writing them -- but I never thought to do this myself.

Yay! Rae, we have a lot in common on our "Elements of Love" lists After making my list, I went back and looked through my outfits to see which had what; in general I found that those I really loved had these elements, and those that I didn't didn't (big surprise). If I found several looks that didn't fit the list but I loved, I tried to figure out WHY I loved them and modify the list accordingly. Also helps show me where I'm missing elements that I love from my wardrobe. Did making the list help clarify stuff (so eloquent, I know)?

Oh, I like this exercise!

AJ, I've been pic heavy recently. Here are some posts:

Vani, I DO appreciate the lists. It was helpful to take a second look and try to quantify which ways I lean!

Rae, Aida, I apologize if I meant that those links would be able to provide a clear formula to define your style. Truth is, there are no clear distinctions, no clean lines. But I do believe everybody's style will have a predominant underlying aesthetic which you build on depending on mood, need, desire etc.

For example, I try new trends all the time, but I wouldn't call myself trendy. I love color and funky designs and jewelry but the decided vibe of my outfits/style is neither boho nor eclectic. The less I shop and more restraint I practice, the more I understand the principal elements of my style that I build upon to take in any direction I feel like at any given moment. Mainly modern classic with a funky urban twist (think Olivia Palermo meets Kate Moss). I was gaining steady clarity until I cut my hair short. Now, I feel like I've taken two steps back and I have to re-think a few things.

It takes time and a lot of back and forth before you can really figure out what your fashion persona is. Just try not to think about it too much and enjoy the journey!

Aida, I feel pretty certain about my weekend persona (I usually just call it being a tomboy). My work wardrobe has evolved more, and is therefore more confusing.

Vani, I got all muddled reading all those descriptions - as I said, it seems like everything fits or nothing fits. After you linked, I went through and read again, then copy-pasted into Word and highlighted everything I thought applied to me. The bulk actually fell into these categories:

# The modern classic – Odd stripe, solid colours, tailored items, knee length skirts, button down shirts, plain pumps. Your look is simple

# The artistic eclectic – selectively choose fashion trends, often ignoring key looks Your accessories are unconventional (often vintage)

# The trendy fashionista – love to shop, ready for a change when the new season comes along

Adding in Aida's advice to make a list of what I'd LIKE to project with my work clothes, I made this list:
efficient, modest, off-kilter, reserved, retro, creative, positive, low-maintenance

So, this adds up to... Quirky Classic? Cautious Ecclectic? Indiscriminate Shopaholic?

Vani, thanks for the links! But it is not so cut-and-dry for us, I think. The problem I'm having is that I wear a wide variety of styles. For me, it was most important that I find some common threads across all those styles so my looks would be more cohesive. For Rae (feel free to correct me, this is just my observation) I think the problem is more that she has two very distinct styles, one for work and one for weekend. Each one has it's own mix of personas, so trying to make all of it fit under one (or even two) is a bit tricky. Hey so Rae, maybe that's what you should do: come up with separate lists, then see how/where they cross over. That might help!

Hope it works for you! Seeing all the elements together made it really easy to decide just HOW to incorporate each type in a way that actually looks, you know, on purpose

Aida, we must have posted at the same time. I like your idea about making a list of what I want to bring in!

See, this just proves how clueless I really am. Could someone explain what "urban" style is? I have a vague image in my head of Applebottom jeans, rap music, and Urban Outfitters window dressings... this can't be right, lol! I've never thought of my self as trendy, either -- I barely tried skinnies late this December.

Rae, I can't really help you here but I know what you're feeling; I have the same problem! I ended up deciding to simply list those elements and inspirations that I love and want to bring to my look. It may not pigeonhole your overall style into a category but it certainly helps keep things fluid looking, especially when you like to wear/mix several styles.

Angie and Fernanda's stories about style evolution have really stuck with me these past few days. I feel that my style has evolved a lot since I've joined YLF and started posting pictures. I've definitely become more picky about colors and styles that flatter. But I'm wondering: what to call "my style" now? When I try to think about it, it's like either everything describes me or nothing describes me. I would be really grateful for a bit of pigeonholing... I feel it would help me be even more choosy about new purchases and enable me to get rid of items that may fit and flatter but just aren't "me."

Thanks in advance!
