Don't feel bad! We did a similar program one year but it was gifts for a family. The mom wanted potholders and dish towels. I got all worked up because I didn't know what colors she wanted, and I was trying to figure out what color her appliances were to make sure they would "match". I needed a reality check from my Mom to get through my self-created crisis, LOL.

MPJ, please don't feel bad for your original question! I often solicit advice from my peers when I am forming an opinion on something. I like to hear other peoples points of view, and incorporate them into my own if they fit my criteria and values. You were just doing the same I think, and it's my pleasure to give you my opinion. (Just ask my dh, I give him my opinion ALL the time! LOL)

How will we form solid ideas if we don't have more than one point of view?

MPJ--you did NOT sound like a jerk in your original post!!!! You sounded like you were really trying to help this kid! (But, as the mom of teens, I know they will completely ignore unsolicited fashion advice!)

I do like the idea of also getting her a pair of lounge pants that could be worn in public. Something like black semi-fitted yoga pants would be super versatile, and if you find the right fabrication they can even pass as dress pants in a pinch (though those might be too expensive).

Absolutely, Kim. I'm actually embarrassed at my original post (heavily edited now)...because you're right. Even though many (most/all YLFers?) think pajama pants in public is a no-go...it IS teen fashion right now. Pajama pants for teens does not equal lack of self-confidence, etc. And as well-intentioned as any "extra" style/fashion/teen grooming books may have been, it's just all kinds of wrong to include something like that in this situation. I may not like pajamas as pants, but I'm happy that I can help in some very very small way to make someone's Christmas a bit merrier, so that is what I will focus on!

And now I have to go yell at some kids to get off my lawn.

ETA Elly - I guess it is the norm at my local high school, so it's likely, but that's another reason I'm just sticking to the list and not deviating. Not my place to make assumptions. Thanks again, guys.

Hmm, I wouldn't be too sure about the pajamas as pants thing unless it is super common amongst HS students in your community. Even if it is, that doesn't mean that the girl is going to do it. I think you have to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Teens rarely wear the "top" of a pair of pajamas. Most pair them with a cheap tank top, or an over-sized t or sweatshirt depending on whether they are for bed or for lounging. Plus, if she is tall, it is common for the top to be uncomfortably short or boxy.

When I was in school, the only time I saw teens in flannel PJ bottoms was after sports practice (7 in the evening) or when athletes were traveling. We live in a rural area, and sometimes our athletes traveled between 3-10 hours to get to games. Although I still didn't participate and don't really approve, I find this type of wear far more acceptable, especially when likely the only people the kids saw were their parents and other teens. Then again, I live in a COLD rural area, so a little subtle flannel after dark is almost as acceptable as warm-up gear in public.

You said the girl was tall? Does she play sports?

You may want to try to pick a solid color or a subtle flannel in the school's colors.

Good for you! As much as I hate the trend, it IS a trend in her world, and we all just want to be like our peers (especially at that age, but even at my old age! LOL). You are going to make her day! In the end she's having fun with fashion too, and isn't that really the only rule?

Nah, I think you're probably right, Kappy. I would never NOT get her what she asked for. It is ABSOLUTELY not my place to do that. I just wondered if there was anything else I could add. Even a book on fashion/style/teen self-confidence is too much and assumes too much, and again, not my place to do that for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the...what's the phrase I want...reality check? I will find the cutest pairs I can and hope she likes them!

I agree with Kappy. It's hard to be a 16 y old girl from a family-in-need. She probably thought about what she wanted, and this is it! How wonderful of you to make her wish come true! And I love Kappy's idea of ADDING a comfy pair that you'd approve of!

I'd just get her what she asked for. There's a time and a place for everything and this doesn't seem to be the time or the place. Maybe you could ADD in a comfy pair of pants you WOULD give the thumbs up too if it would make you feel better.

** Heavily edited, thanks to a much-needed reality check **

The tall pajama pants I'm supposed to be tracking down is a wish made by a 16/17 year old girl (anonymously) through our "Families in Need" Christmas Wish program at church, and probably worn in public as pants...

And you know what? Not the time or place to judge. I hope I didn't sound like a jerk to anyone who read the original post. Thanks to Kappy and Isis for giving me a reality check on what the program is for. Wish me luck in finding a Tall size in a brick-and-mortar store!!!
