I love that book!!

Milo would definitely wear something nondescript. I think your son was right. Except maybe the shirt would be chambray and the pants would be khaki.

As soon as I saw your title I thought of the Phantom Tollbooth which was one of my favorites too over 50 years ago. I rather picture Milo in a t-shirt that is rather faded and stretched out with ill fitting jeans that are also faded. He looks like he grabbed whatever was on top in the drawer or maybe something lying around in his room. Beige on beige is a definite possibility as long as it is SSB -- Soul Sucking Beige.
This is a fascinating question......and I thought I would have no trouble answering it, but I am. I need to think about it. I thought that it would be almost intuitive. Maybe the lesson is that children are more intuitive. LOL

Being a bit of a Forum hog, but that's what you get from being racked up in bed with a cold, instead of at the gym with 'Evil Kevin' the personal trainer!

Many moons ago, when youngest son was in elementary school, he was assigned his first book report. His favourite book at the time was 'The Phantom Tollbooth' by Norton Juster. The book report format was 3 photocopied pages of questions with ample lines for descriptive answers or quotes for support. Son didn't have too much trouble with the questions, until he came to this: What does the main character look like?

Son claimed there was no description in the book, and the pictures's were't helpful to him. So, I suggested he imagine what Milo might look like if he met him in real life, and to support the description with a rationale.

Son wrote: 'Milo leads a boring life before he goes through the toolbooth. I imagine he wears beige shirts and beige pants, because beige is boring, and Milo is boring.'

I posted the quote on an independent RPG site where I was a DM ( shocking! I know!) and the tech and engineering types (guys) who were in abundance on the site, all had to chime in with what they were wearing. Mostly beige chino's and either blue or white button-down shirts! They thought son's observations were hilarious, but inaccurate. :-)

What do you think Milo would wear?
