I'd love to invest in one of those French Kande necklaces myself - something on the longer side - but I get overwhelmed with all the choices. If anyone wants to pick me out one, please do. ;-)

It's interesting to me that there have been so many jewelry threads lately. Seems we've gone from jewelry-free trend back to jewelry-yes trend!

My biggest struggle with jewelry is finding the right scale for 5'0 me. Even if the length is adjustable, I tend to wind up looking like a kid playing dress up in mommy's jewelry. But, I do not care for delicate jewelry, which would of course be the solution here....

Hehe. This to me was just right and still would be. All metal, unfussy without being simplistic, geometric and yet organic.

Earring input here - if you don't like weighty earrings, you could get a pair of investment-level stud earrings you really, really like - interesting gold, white gold diamond, or another gemstone - and simply wear them all the time, like your watch.

Seconding the pearls - I recently found affordable freshwater pearls on eBay. I bought an 18" baroque brown strand for me, and a 33" soft gray strand for a special birthday present, and we both wear them constantly.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/beauti.....#038;_from=

I like quality bead necklaces (agate, vintage glass) with a touch of color. I find that I wear them for years, unlike my trendy metal pieces. Chunky faceted agate is a good way to get several colors in one necklace, subtly. Today I'm wearing dark blue pants, a jewel green shirt, and beige shoes - but my blue/green/teal/brown agate beads tie it all together.

A vintage suggestion for you: a rock crystal bead necklace, about 18 inches, with gray or black spacer beads.

Another jewellery lover here. Some excellent suggestions have already been given by other forum members. Imogen Lamport has some great ideas on her blog about jewellery. She discusses what necklaces to wear with necklines and body types, etc.

I tend not to wear long necklaces although I like the look on others. I think it has to do with body proportions.

I find it hard to suggest jewellery for others because it is such a personal thing. I splurged on some jewellery for myself a few years ago so I am not buying much these days.

Lisa you made a good point about high and low end too. I do that with jewellery - sometimes I want a quality classic piece to 'stodge up' something which is otherwise a bit adventurous for work. Other times I want something edgier to 'de-stodge' my work outfit if it is feeling a bit too classic. And I mix up the high and low end items wearing silver tone alloy pieces with sterling silver, stainless steel equally happily.

I have some coloured necklaces in various configurations but the workhorses, the items that get the most wear from me, are generally the silver-toned metal ones, especially if they have an interesting finish or texture. The others are nice for a pop of colour but I find them harder to style and sometimes don't feel like they have enough 'oomph' to make my outfits interesting.

Also I've recently done a purge because jewellery is like the rest of your wardrobe. Some things, especially trendy ones, get dated or your style moves on. Plus too many options means you can't find what you want or it is too hard to choose.

Retailgirl - I also feel undressed without a necklace. (I have been known to head out at lunchtime and buy one on the odd occasion I have gone to work in a rush without one.)

I don't wear many rings. I have a silver wedding ring and a set of three stacking silver/moonstone rings I wear on my other hand. I have a few pairs of silver earrings but usually alternate between about 3 pairs, small silver 'huggie' hoops, a square stud, and a silver pyramid shape with one side sparkly pave. I have three silver watches, one pyramid, one boyfriend and one classic. When varied with the necklaces they give me quite a bit of variety to change up my look.

I have those Majorica baroque pearls and wear them often and always get compliments on them! I wear shirts usually and like a 16-18inch necklace to fill in the neckline. Not crazy about long necklaces. I have the pearls I mentioned just now, plus freshwater pearl necklaces in gray and white, probably 10-12 mm or so, i also have the graduated bead necklace from Tiffany in silver. My other two go tos are a silver monogrammed oval disk on a chunky chain and a similar necklace in gold. ( lovr the French Kande pieces!). I got all of these pieces at local boutique type jewelry stores. As far as earrings, I feel naked without them! Diamond, ( or CZ ) studs, pearl studs, or gold or silver studs are really all I need. ( although I have more!). I always wear a bracelet, my wedding rings, a watch. But I would feel, naked without earrings, first, and dome kind of necklace, second.

French Kande is a really great line the Unefemme wears in her photos quite often. I'd be ordering in a heartbeat were our exchange rate a bit more friendly. But for you Americans - it's a wonderful line! Shipskitty - I go through spurts where I'm buying as much jewellery as I do clothing too - not that I wear it all, and all of the time, but it sure does finish off a look. All of this jewellery talk is making me think about a particular pendant I spotted before Christmas at Thomas Sabo . I'm thinking about splurging on it once I figure out my end-of-year sales .

You've all been very helpful.
One of the things I'm struggling with is wearing a longer necklace -- sometimes it makes me feel like Grandma. I don't know how to fix that, other than to buy a new, long necklace from a store like Anthropolgie where I know the fashion is current. I also don't really know what lengths look good beyond my standard 16-18" base of throat necklace. Also, is there such a thing as a subtle statement necklace? I used to have a necklace that was simply red discs, and when I wore it with a plain black dress and dalmatian-spotted cardi, I would always always get compliments. It was cheap and it broke, and I haven't found a replacement.
AM, that first necklace of Majorica baroque pearls is gorgeous and would be exactly something I would be drawn to.
Shipskitty, I bought a chain necklace similar to the one you posted at Nordstrom Rack the other day. I also love that chain knot one. Well, I like them all. Will you be my personal jewelry shopper?
Meggie, necklace extenders! Brilliant! I did not know that such things existed.
lisap, you make excellent, excellent points. And shamed me into giving myself a manicure. I have never thought about the fact that my hands are always on display. I will definitely take the retailer copy advice!
Thanks, all. I've learned a ton in this little thread!

Extenders are also useful if you want to layer necklaces to give you better placement of the layers.

Also chain bracelets will often do the job of an extender allowing you to experiment using things you already have without needing to purchase a purpose designed extender (and if you are crafty they are easy to make).

Jewellery is so personal , and there is so much to choose from ! You and I have the same job and I know I wear more shorter necklaces than I do longer ones because having a long pendant swinging around when you are lugging books, catalogues, samples, bending over to get things, etc etc - is a big nuisance. I have a ton of jewellery - but am always updating it. Because we both sit with our hands visible (pointing in catalogues, working across a desk from a buyer etc) , I also like to wear rings, bracelets and watches. Not all at once of course, but I do like a cool ring with some bracelets if there is no necklace going on that day. A beautiful statement watch is also a nice professional piece to wear. (I know you love your purple one though - ) I the key is finding a look you like (say Michael Kors, or Kate Spade, or Club Monaco, Banana R etc) and then copying it from different resources: some cheaper, and some higher end. I think it's interesting to have a jewellery "look" or personality to go along with your clothes rather than just tossing on any old thing that doesn't have any particular style or meaning. Take a look at the better clothing stores - they usually have a jewellery line that will complement their clothing (e.g. Anthropologie) . I could go on forever - I love jewellery!! Did I say that yet?

As someone who is also trying to increase my use of jewelry, I find these necklace extenders very useful. I find I get much more use out of my necklaces when I can adjust them to hit just where I want them to hit. I also look for necklaces chains that I can adjust shorter if need be...necklaces with a few links big enough to take the claw. I find necklaces with one length only very challenging to style. I hope you have fun on your search for new bling :) http://www.amazon.com/Emitatio.....B0029PJ2BC

Baroque pearls are lovely. I would also look for a few bold bib type necklaces in your preferred metal And a bolder chain necklace. They are great for adding a modern touch to your outfits.

I recommend starting with cheaper versions of the bolder looks and experimenting with what you like then later upgrading to better quality pieces.

I have not updated my jewelry in many moons. So let's pretend I own nothing.
My style is (striving to be) modern classic with a twist
My color palette seems to be black, white, gray, navy, taupe, with accents of teal and berry
I prefer v necks and open-necked blouses. My current work-from-home uniform is jeans and v-neck cashmere pullover. My wear-to-work style ranges from business casual (pants or skirt, blouse or dressy tee, cardi or denim jacket, flats or riding boots) to smart business casual (pants or skirt, blouse, jacket that does not match bottoms, pumps).
I have short hair and pierced ears but rarely wear earrings because the weight tends to bother me.
I always wear a watch that is sporty with a purple band. Waterproof because I never ever take it off. I refuse to lose the watch, even though it's probably hideous in the eyes of fashion.
I'd like to purchase just a few things, at various lengths that will work with whatever I have.
And I'd love to see what you come up with.
