My first thought was elegant, but that feels somewhat out of reach like chic. So I think I'll go with polished.

Trust Vildy to come up with something outside the box. Some days, I like "windblown" too!

Angie -- "modern"? Of course. Why did I not predict you would say that. You are absolutely modern.

Sara L. -- "effortless" -- I like it! I think it goes hand in hand with "cool".

Rachy -- to me, "cool" always has dark undercurrents, when the word is applied to a person's style.

RoseandJoan -- I think "fluid" is a good word for your overall style, and not just because of the way your clothes drape.

Today, "windblown" appeals to me. I've been liking my hair so that the longer bottom layers look blown forward from the back. And I like to wear ladylike, polished, traditional clothing that's worn carelessly, tossed on, disheveled. (vs. distressed clothing added to polished outfits) I feel dynamic so like the idea of having the wind at my back speeding me on.

This is a tough question - how about "effortless" as in "I just threw this together but don't I look great?" or maybe "sleek" since I don't like overdone outfits. I'm not saying I always end up looking like this, but it's what I'm going for.

"Honest", "authentic" and "myself" -- those all mean the same thing, I think. Nice one! Another popular descriptor. I don't feel like I need it on my list, though, because I do dress like myself -- I can't really dress any other way. (Although I did try it once -- dressing like someone else, I mean -- at the beginning of my teaching career, just so I wouldn't look like a student. I tried to dress older, and more business-like. It felt awkward).

Mona -- absolutely, I think you could describe a person's style as "confident". I wouldn't mind having that one as a descriptor, either.

kkards -- you could hyphenate it. "Put-together"? I bet you could get away with that.

Amy -- I like distinctive, too. Gee, there are a lot of words that I want to appropriate.

I thought about it some more....but I'm still going with "tasteful". Perhaps "chic" implies tasteful, as well as other qualities such as looking current, effortless, and attractive, and that's why so many of us have chosen that word. The word itself is a bit hard to define, but I think most anybody would be happy with being labeled "chic"!

But still, I'm going to use "tasteful", because that has become an overriding (and more specific) theme when it comes to my style goals these days. Five years ago, if I'd thought of this question, my answer would probably have been "cool". Cool is still high on my list. Even now, I'd rather be called cool than chic. Both imply effortless style, but cool also suggests an attitude to life that l like. A deeply ingrained sort of confidence. But it IS possible to look cool and be a little lacking in good taste (punk comes to mind -- it looks awesome, but since it's all about flicking the "V" to authority, it's hardly tasteful), and at the moment, good taste trumps everything for me. I'm old enough to want to be chic and dignified, not cute and funky.
