We had to hurry back home so we could drive between storms. Christmas dinner ended up being Yunnan Rice Noodle soup instead of the big dinner we had planned, as we didn’t want to have to toss the leftovers. Next trip will feature a lovely nut loaf, chestnut and apple stuffing, cranberry sauce and an apple-cranberry pie!

This year was a bit different for us, food-wise. My husband normally cooks a rather lavish spread anchored by prime rib and Julia Child’s potatoes baked in cream. It’s a lot of food and a lot of work. This year we opted for a simpler, but still delicious Barefoot Contessa beef stroganoff made with ribeye, noodles, salad and bread. My husband and I hosted, and my son and his girlfriend surprised us by offering to cook the meal, which was delightful. I could get used to this.

I fulfilled a New Year's Day tradition from the American South by making Hoppin' John. Here's where tradition broke down: I had no black-eyed peas so used french lentils; I made it vegan; I made it in the Instant Pot.

It did not stay vegan because I covered mine in slices of smoked Gouda and Mr. A added leftover chicken to his but it was delicious!

Angie, Magret de Canard sounds like something Mr. A would adore but he has a strict "no duck" policy after bonding deeply with the ducks who flocked to our pond at the last house.

Jenn, I am so sorry to hear about your DH. I hope he recovers quickly.

Our Christmas dinner with my family was postponed because of Covid. We finally got together today. Dinner was salmon, chickpea and spinach scramble, roasted brussel sprouts and cheese buns—chocolate cake for dessert.

Mr. SF's family got together on the 27th. They had a traditional turkey dinner. We just ate the vegetables. We are both vegetarians/vegans.

Seeing our families was the best part.

Jenn - sorry to hear your Christmas plans were put in disarray. I hope your son loved his very cool coat for Christmas.

I hosted extended family of 26 for Christmas and it was chaos! After the first half hour DH looked at the clock and said 'It has only been 30 minutes, it feels like 2 hours!'

Starters
Sausage rolls, mini steak pies, nuts, potato crisps, dips and crackers

Main
Freshly baked baguettes, turkey, ham, roast beef, potato salad, garden salad, coleslaw, cheese board

Dessert
Chocolates, gingerbread (homemade and amazing), fruit cake (also homemade), fruit platter

The family all bought different dishes and everyone over catered - but we all took food back home, so not too much was wasted.

I had 3 ice chests full of drinks - in the Australian summer, you need to stay hydrated, so not too much alcohol was consumed.

Highlight was seeing the younger children, aged 6, 4, 1.5 years and baby of 9 months opening their presents and getting super excited. The 4-year-old particularly loved Margot (my dog) and thought she was a real-life teddy. It was a real family reunion and celebration as my sister's family flew over from the east coast of Australia and we had not caught up in person since 2019.

Boxing Day was DS's 14th birthday, so no rest as we had another, albeit smaller, party to host the following day!

Fun to read everybody's traditional or not dinners! We were "not" -- after a couple of cancelled flights we ended up eating French fries and chicken tenders (and cocktails, of course) in the airport bar while waiting for our flight to see my daughter in Portland. (We finally arrived at 2 a.m. 12/26!)

The semifreddo is so lovely! I love seeing summer Christmas traditions - strawberries are perfect! For us they are Canada Day (July 1) dessert, with white cake and whipped cream, red & white and perfectly timed for our short season of locally grown ones.
I typed out 3 meals then lost it, suffice to say, it was all delicious and the results of family coming together to be festive, collaborative and realistic (eg. forgoing sit-down dinner for 22 for a much less stressful Christmas Eve of appetizers and turkey sliders).

JNZ - semifreddo was one of those desserts I used to see in "women's magazines" when I was a kid. It's terribly photogenic, as you have shown but I had no recognition of how to pronounce it or even really what it was. Still haven't made my own but at least I now know how to say it and what it is.

Last night we watched as LMA created his signature dish (a simple, delicious chicken that he has cooked and eaten five nights a week for the past five years). We repeated with tofu for me.

So sorry for Jenn. We had our summer Christmas at 86 y old and 91 y old parents-in-law’s house. Every year we feel they may not be here the next one but they are! 86 y old MIL still managed to prepare some food.
Nibbles: cranberry mix ( nuts etc), crisps and dip, crackers. Punch made with orange juice/ ginger ale/cold tea. Bubbly or white or rose wine.
Main: seafood cocktail mix, glazed ham, baked salmon, Harissa chicken salad, Parmesan roast potatoes, potato salad, lettuce salad.
Dessert: trifle, semifreddo, whipped or liquid cream, fresh strawberries.
Afters: fresh cherries.
9 of us. There were leftovers!
Pic: DH and DD2 made the semifreddo and she/I decorated it. Looked awesome and tasted it too! Italian apparently.

Jenn, you guys are troupers! Glad your hubs got at least some of the tastes of a big dinner. Your Doordash meal sounds great.

We had saag paneer for Christmas. It’s one of my son’s favorites, and the staff at the Indian restaurant near us knew it. I could take my own containers for them to fill. Seeing as our cancelled flight was just before all the stores and any restaurants close for the 3-day holiday, we were super happy for the saag. I briefly made plans to go out somewhere with a fireplace, but he was sick, so I made one last run.

I'm gaining weight and my skin is breaking out just reading these posts.

We were supposed to do this on Christmas Day but since we didn't, yesterday was the day the Aprils made homemade gnocchi. Yes, we have the little ridged wooden paddles and yes, we got flour everywhere.

I made the dough and then stood back and coached while the men did the rolling.

Lazy genius idea: skip the pan of boiling water and put these directly into a hot skillet with butter and olive oil. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, what could be bad...

An Italian friend had brought me fresh sage from her garden last August and I had frozen the individual leaves in anticipation of the Christmas Gnocchi. So we did it classic style: with brown butter and sage leaves.

Jenn, so sorry to hear about your stressful time! Hope your belated holiday celebration was peaceful.

Thanksgiving is always stressful for me because the focus is on the meal, so I like to keep Christmas dinner simple and easy. We had glazed ham, Caesar salad with bacon, stuffing, steamed red potatoes and green beans, and garlic cheddar biscuits. For dessert, we had apple pie with whipped cream and pumpkin bars.

We have always always had either a turkey or a goose on Christmas Day. But this year, due to dates of family travel, my nephew hosted us to a turkey dinner on Boxing Day. So on Christmas Day we had prime rib, with mashed potatoes and broccoli.

But Christmas Eve was our traditional: tourtiere (French Canadian meat pie) with various pickles, and a bûche de Noël (Yule log cake) for dessert.

Jenn, I’m so sorry your holiday was spent that way! Sending many good vibes.

Christmas dinner was lovely for us. We spent the holiday in Quebec City with my stepson and his wife and her parents. Christmas eve dinner was at Le Continental (I went for the filet mignon for my first red meat in quite some time and it was fantastic!). Christmas Day dinner was at Bistro le Sam at Chateau Frontenac, and it was also outstanding. I got the seafood casserole.

We’re on our way back home now, driving. Starting tomorrow my diet is going to be back on a healthier track! We definitely indulged while we were away. A few photos below.

Side dishes
Sauteed carrots
Sauteed veggie mix (peas, french beans, artichokes)
Celery fennel and artichokes salad

Dessert
Panettone (the traditional Milanese Christmas cake)
Lychees and tangerines

Sparkling white wine for the final toast

This year I summoned my courage and hosted Christmas. I ordered the first course at the deli and cooked only the side dishes, the other things were prepared by friends. For my minimal taste this is far too much but my friends insisted that Christmas is Christmas. Heh, Italians ... :)

No traditional Christmas fare for us. I cooked a turkey breast while Mr. ND was in Arizona on vacation earlier this month so I'm done with turkey for a while. I made lemon Shrimp Scampi. It's quick and delicious over angel hair pasta, which is something we almost never eat. As a treat, I made some oatmeal raisin cookies for dessert.

Khris - anyone who grew up in a Jewish family will tell you there is nothing more traditional than ordering Chinese on Christmas Day.

cjh, I honestly don't know where the Christmas goose came from but would guess you're correct based on this Christmas song
Christmas is coming
The goose is getting fat
Please to put a penny in the old man's hat...

Or tip your Door Dasher 100%. :)

I am loving hearing about these meals! LMA is with us until Friday and he wants some cooking lessons - you all are inspiring me.

Irina, you've given me a gift idea for my vegan sister!

We did Bbq lamb along with a variety of salads. Dessert was Steamed English fruit pudding with custard along with macerated strawberries and icecream.

Jenn- what a stressful and hard day after all you have been through.

Fun and interesting to read all the delicious menus! Jenn, I hope your hubby is recovering and perhaps able to eat a few items of your postponed feast.

April, your description of the goose made me laugh! Is the tradition due to ages old custom of raising your own goose?

We are having our Christmas meals on Thursday, having settled on that day to avoid traveling and taking my 95-year-old MIL out in the recent terrible weather. Even today it was supposed to be past us, but we had snow flurries, sleet, freezing drizzle and snow showers off and on.

Planned for ourselves, MIL, daughter, her husband and three children: brunch of egg and sausage casserole, frozen fruit cups and home made yeast caramel pecan rolls. Early supper of chili, cheese and crackers, guacamole and chips and jalapeño poppers. Perhaps cookies if I make some - hubby and I have eaten everything in that category in the past few days.

We went unconventional and ordered Chinese. Had the leftovers for lunch. It was nice, and low stress, which is what we needed.
Jenn- I hope that Kevin is doing better now. What terrible timing!

On Christmas Eve, DH and I had pot pies (his beef, mine chicken) from Linn’s of Cambria - a swell Central Coast restaurant that ships their savory and sweet pies. And roast sweet potatoes.

Nothing special on Christmas Day - lots of grazing on misc. leftovers, cookies, and candy. My sister sent us a meat & cheese gift box, which DH sliced up and we ate with crackers & spicy mustards.

Jenn, I’m feeling the feels for you and Kevin.

Xmas lunch at the Minu's house included roast veggies (potatoes, parsnips, carrots, swedes) and stuffed yellow peppers for me. Mr Minu cooked his meat as well his brussel's sprouts!

So sorry, Jenn! Wishing you DH fast recovery!

We had late lunch with DS, DIL and baby Gregory on the 24th.

I made a Russian dish - crepes stuffed with mashed potatoes & mushrooms, also pan fried sweet potatoes, made tzatziki and a salad. DH smoked trout before lunch. It’s been years since I made deviled eggs so it was time to do it :)
I also made a cake a day before. But my favorite desert was a chocolate salami I gave my DH as a gift Read the fine print :)

@ Suz - my dishwasher is on the fritz too. Washes, but no heat. I do a pre-wash, then run through the washer - but have to run the tap on hot a few times during the cycle to ensure the water going to the machine is warm, if not hot! There is an 8 week wait list for the repairman to just look at it! :-(

Hmmm. We always do ham at Christmas, prime rib for DS#2’s birthday on the 27th, and lamb on New Year’s Day. I’ll pick up a turkey on sale after the holidays - but mainly for all the great leftovers (including a stock with the carcass) and not so much the day-of meal!
