Ha, I've always been a planner sort of girl but in the last few years I've gone all digital. I was just thinking the other day if I should revert back to a paper version for 2015. I've always loved pretty paper products, planners included. Thanks for all of the good info on this thread.

Hehe! Lovely ideas here on this thread. All I use is a paper calendar hanging on my wall in my workroom! I usually get one with kittens on or funny cartoons (I didn't even stick with Google calendar when I started it) I know, I'm an absolute dinosaur!

I am a pen-and-paper planner girl too. I use a Franklin Covey planner that has two pages per day; it's 5.5" x 8.5". I put the pages in a small binder that I got at OfficeMax (roughly 7" x 9"). I put only three months' worth of pages in the binder at a time: the current month, plus the previous and next month. That gives me enough pages to work with at one time without the binder being monstrously huge.

Susie, I looked at Levenger online last year, but I just couldn't fathom how it wouldn't fall apart, but I didn't know anyone who had tried it. It works well for you? Everything else about it looks perfect for my needs. I would love to have something I can fold back on itself like a spiral notebook. The biggest drawback of the dayrunner, filofax, etc is the non-folding.

Are you familiar with Levenger, Carter? They make notepads that are held with rings and you can shift pages around. It's called the Circa system and they do have agendas/calendars as well as lots of different types of pages. Levenger paper is high quality and nice to write on.

Ooooh...thanks for all the links! I'll go through all of them tomorrow.

Laura, tons of great info as always!

Rachy, I do have a paper cutter! I'm also a MS Publisher freak with ridiculously specific thoughts about how the page should be designed:-).

Caro, I think my first one was a filofax, but then I got so caught up in the Franklin Covey First Things First inserts, I forgot all about Filofax! I'll take a look.

My goodness, Kat, I'll have a good time looking through your link! I have seen the I Heart Organizing planner and a few others over there, but they were more kid/home focused than I need (my baby is 18). It looks like I missed the vast majority of the options.

Louise, I love your lemon yellow filofax! I need a slightly bigger version, but the form is perfect!

LisaP, hooray...educate me! I'll PM you. Do you have a catalog to send me?

Here's a link to the etsy site, as you can see, lots of options depending on what you're looking for (details, hourly breakdowns, spaces for notes, etc)

I found a great many lovely leather "binders", liked this one because it is soft rather than hard cover and so may fit better into my bag..... Happy hunting

I am paper-product nerd, and also rep for Moleskine and Leuchturm among a few others. Despite having access to all the planners I could want, I have found this one that works well for me. I still use my iPhone calendar, and admittedly it's not a perfect system - but I'm a pen and paper person at heart. I like the elastic cord that holds it all together and there is room to stash a few things and write extra notes. I'm on my second one.

You may want to check out Etsy--there are quite a few folks over there with either customizable planner inserts, customizable planners, or downloadable pdfs with planner that you've customized... I've spent way too much time there lately, because I had one of those Erin Condren planners and found that I didn't use alot of the materials (professional, grad student, and mom stuff all needs to be organized.....) Anyway, I'll keep following to see what is working for everyone.

Well, in the day, I used a Filofax. The *personal* size, I think it's called. 6.5" x 3.5". I made my own pages for it. I'd print several copies to a single sheet and then chop it up with a paper cutter... which everyone may not have, admittedly.

I really miss my Filofax, but carrying it, the phone, and a camera were too much. Mostly I just go disorganised, sad to say.

Yeah, the selection in planners has really reduced in the last few years, presumably as more people go to digital-only. I don't know if my suggestions will be that helpful since I usually opt for bound planners rather than loose-leaf ones.

My 2014 one (second one I tried) I got from Barnes & Noble, and according to the back was made by Gallery Leather, Maine. I think it's similar to this one here - http://www.galleryleather.com/.....ly-planner - except that all the days are on one page and the facing page is for notes/to-dos.

I'm going to go a bit smaller for next year, and try a Moleskine brand one in a ~5x8 size. I've also used their pocket-sized ones in the past, and they're really nice if all you want is somewhere to note appointments and carry it easily in a small purse. Despite Moleskine's annoying hipster rep, they really are sturdily made, which is helpful if you want your planner to survive a whole year being knocked around. I really really wish they made them in wire-bound, so I could carry a pen/pencil with it easily.

Two suggestions for brands to check out:
Quo Vadis - I've had a couple of theirs and a) the paper is lovely and b) the layouts are pretty good. I think you can get loose leaf versions online.

Planner Pads - they've got a unique layout which puts to-dos on top and calendar on the bottom, week on two facing pages, which you may or may not like. They do sell loose-leaf editions as well as binders etc.

Warning...We're talking old school planners here, folks...not iphones, ipads, etc. Sometimes I just need to use a pen and paper and be able to flip back and forth.

It's time to get ready for an organized and productive 2015, and I'm already stumped. For many years, I used the Franklin Covey/Day Runner system with leather case, 300 pages and a bunch of sections that were just irrelevant. It was really heavy and too thick to toss in a purse or even a slim briefcase. So, several years ago, I switched to a DayMinder spiral daily calendar. It was super easy to toss in my purse, but there was no place for receipts, notes, project planning, etc. Last year, I tried two approaches...a purse-size weekly spiral calendar and a desk binder (regular binder size so it had to live on my desk) that had all of my own custom pages and sections. It was fantastic having the pages designed exactly as I wanted/needed them. What has not worked at all this past year was that these two planners didn't communicate with each other. I would write something in one that was never synced up with the other.

This year, I need to go back to only one planner. I like the old "classic" size that holds 5.5" x 8.5" pages so I can continue to make my own pages. I'd prefer 3 rings over 7, but I'll take 7 if I have to. I'd like the ring size to be 0.75" so it doesn't get too heavy. Then I want to be able to pick and choose my pre-printed inserts and complete the planner with my own pages.

I really didn't think it would be so hard. But it is. I found a whopping one binder cover that I like. Naturally it is $150 just for the darned cover. Yes, it's Italian leather, blah, blah, blah, but I can certainly live without leather. Then the inserts aren't what I want either. I can't find the right pieces and parts to make it work.

There must be a better way. For those of you still carrying around a planner/calendar, what have you found that really works for you, and why does it work so well? Links, pictures, etc would be awesome!
