Well first I'd probably waste a full minute in shock and then panic for the other, as I'm a ridiculously slow dresser according to hubby I keep a little list of outfit ideas that aren't too out-there in my closet for uninspired days, but also for this type of last minute dressing situation. It works pretty well, especially on weekends when I tend to stress the most about being hurried to dress.

In a flash I will throw on skinny jeans, boots, black top & a cardigan/topper + scarf. #2 is a black ponte knit skirt with leggings, boots & tunic. (for our usual weather)

I have to get up at 5:30 and I am not a morning person, so mornings are a little rough no matter what! I do best figuring it out the night before!

Aziraphale - no judgement intended at all, and apologies if it sounded like I was in any way. We all have different kids and different lives and therefore different things work! I have many friends that had great luck with that method too :)

And, to contribute to some re-railing ... dresses are another great 2 minute summer fix for me

Lol toronto- and alaskagirl. That's the great thing about older kids. I love how we can sleep in on weekends now!

"Sleep training" does sound draconian, doesn't it? All I mean is that we let the boy cry it out it the middle of the night. It took a week for him to stop doing it. But it was hard to listen to. He's a star sleeper now -- he gets eleven solid hours and never wakes us up. (And he doesn't appear traumatized in any way; he's the more emotionally well-adjusted of our two kids). It's my daughter who's the night owl. I do think some kids are naturally sounder sleepers than others.

I'm derailing my own thread here, but for Thistle's sake, I want to elaborate on the French thing. I really wish I had known about it. My sister in law is French, and she says most babies there sleep through the night by three or four MONTHS (!!). She thought her baby was late because it was more like four or five months for him. Yet she was horrified at the idea of "sleep training". I asked her about it after I read a book on French vs. American parenting. It turns out that French mothers always wait a couple minutes before picking up even their very young babies. Sometimes, after a couple of minutes of crying, the baby will fall back asleep on his/her own, and so they learn to self-soothe really early on. If the baby doesn't self-soothe after a few minutes, then the parents will respond.

It's worth a try, anyway. If I were going to have another baby, that's what I'd do. It might work.

ha, alaskagirl, same with my eight year old ... our only "sleeping training" consisted of training the kids not to wake us up when they climb into bed with us

When I'm running late for work? Trousers, shell, cardigan, loafers. Also, my big stainless watch and two-tone gold and silver small hoop earrings. They're easy and match everything. I bring my knee-hi hose and shoes into the car and put them on at the light. Makeup is done at the light as well. Fortunately, I don't run late too often.

On the days I have to wear scrubs it's a no-brainer.

When I have to bike with kid to school or drive kid to school? Yoga pants, athletic jacket zipped over my t-shirt to conceal that I am braless, flip flops, and always sunglasses.

Holy crap, Thistle. 18 months? That's a lot of months of no sleep. :-) Better nocturnal luck with the next one! (and congratulations on your pregnancy, by the way -- I did read about it, but I'm afraid I've responded to few threads this semester). You could try that thing the French do, where from very early on they don't pick the baby up right away. They wait a minute or two. I wish I'd known about that with my son. I wasn't expecting to have to do anything because my daughter had basically sleep trained herself at four months, and I thought that was normal. We had to aggressively sleep train my son at six months because he was still waking up like six times a night and sleeping through the day. The sleep training week was not a happy week. :-(

Diane, you crack me up. But that's a great solution!

I was there a lot when DD was younger. She didn't sleep through the night until she was 18 months! My fall back was:

Winter:

Black slacks - ponte or some fabric that doesn't require much care. Talbots has some great options.

Sweater with a tee underneath

Black booties

Rest of the year:

Black slacks - ponte or some fabric that doesn't require much care. Talbots has some great options.

Faux wrap top in a comfortable fabrication

Black flats

Straight leg jeans, a knit top with a v-neck cardigan if the weather calls for it, and ballet flats. I work at home so I don't have to be dressed for the office. Back when i did, i had several of those Dockers type of cotton pants and several button front shirts, so that probably would have been my go to for a business casual office with comfortable flats. I've got a couple dresses that are fallback outfits for the 'let's go out to dinner' type of surprise.

I am a SAHM in a rural setting that is a hybrid "bedroom community" and farming. There are really only two situations that are the common ones for me : just going around for the day in our area or going to Boston. Coincidentally, the answer is basically the same.

For around here, I would do jeans ( straight legs or skinnies ) and a longer button-down ( blouse ) and a jacket. They type of blazer/jacket would change according to the place. And boots. In the Summer, it would be a dress. Period.

I was just reading an article on a news anchor in NYC who gets up at 3:30 every morning in order to start work at 5:30 AM. She said that she picks all her outfits out on Sunday and during the week there is no changing or altering the outfits at all. She doesn't do "feeling" dressing for work.

I couldn't do that, though it makes sense.

My get ready in a split second moments are not at all for work or study. It's invariably when my BF is unexpectedly off work and we now have somewhere to go ASAP. Social outings mostly. Anyway, my outfits in those instances are as varied as the destination so I don't really have one fall back solution.

I'm curious to see what everyone does in this situation. I've had a lot -- a LOT -- of days this semester where I've had insufficient sleep and only a couple of minutes to throw on my clothes and head out the door. Despite my best efforts to manage my time, there just aren't enough hours in the day. (This also explains why I'm not on the forum much anymore). Yesterday was my last day, though -- woohoo! Final presentation for design class. Of course, that meant that I was up nearly all of the night before. I went to bed at 4:00 a.m. and got up at 6:30. Normally I get up at six, but I set my alarm for an extra half hour, which meant I had to pick something fast, and with a fuzzy head, the next morning. In that sort of situation, I've discovered that what I grab is a pair of boyfriend jeans (comfort!), my camo belt, a stretchy fitted black top, and Converse. It's my ultimate in comfort and flop-proofness.
