krish, i think even working out has variants. bike-riding vs power walking vs weightlifting vs pilates. all of which i do to varying frequency. is your goal to build a dedicated capsule or an inter-related capsule?

ps: the popularity of facetime has made a "facetime facelift" a popular request...i solve it by putting the ipad on a shelf at eye level. here, i would also think about lighting from in front or diffuse lighting instead of from a task related spot light and the interaction of the brightness of the outfit and the shadows or light it throws on my face.

Excellent! What a nice array of activities! So, casual can be conjugated in many different moods and tenses it appears! And we need something to wear for each occasion. Thankfully many outfit formulas are interchangeable, but there is some tweaking for each event.

For example I learn that different types of workout clothes are required for different activities - duh, I don't know why it never occurred to me.

Work from home seems like a no-brainer - until, like Suz, you get into video-conferencing. Then I guess you must dress up a bit. (and maybe even think of what's behind you!).

bj1111 has a good point: frequency... should determine how much of your closet is dedicated to the activity. For example if you go walk the dog everyday then there should be more thought and more items put into the walk-the-dog wardrobe.

But I am most interested in getting real day-to-day casual occasions, so that we could later build a sort of "what works" and "what does not work" list out of them.

great thread starter, krish. i really like seeing what ylf-ers do when they aren't on ylf! such a diverse group of activities, just like the women.

work in its many guises...
from home: extreme lounge--i have no aspirations to "dress for work" in this sphere
from office: meetings (casual, formal, working, one-on-one, group)
from conferences: meetings (board, informal), presentations (one-on-one, group, horde)

play...
gardening, farmers market, cruising drives, short weekenders
i'd like to claim working out but that would be more aspirational than fact

travel...
overlap between work and play and distance vacation travel
walking, museums, dinner (nice, not-so-nice)
also east, west, middle coasts...so LA appropriate casual is not DC appropriate casual.

krish, i think where needs to be augmented by when (not just climate but how frequently). i go to LA lots, so my middle coast casual is significantly augmented by west coast casual, but my workout capsule has 4 dedicated pieces and a bunch of tanks.

This is a great thread. I have spent a lot of time thinking about this very subject over the past year. It finally occurred to me that my work-at-home capsule and city-visits capsule, while overlapping, really are not the same, and I need different kinds of clothing. Both are on the casual side, but there are distinct needs.

My list:

Working from home (writing & editing).
Videoconferencing with colleagues.
Gym.
Downtown shopping (in my small city)
Household chores and cooking.
Garden.
Visits to doctor/ dentist.
Running (on my own or with daughter)
Walks.
Shopping at a mall.
Travelling to city (usually by train or car)
City outings (galleries, theatre, music)
Visiting mother in her home
Taking mother out for errands and meals
Dinners or lunches out with other friends or family (in my own city or larger city)
Entertaining at home
Tea or coffee or pub meet ups with friends
Grocery store
Market pickup
Meetings with daughter's teacher
Public appearances -- various types.
Yoga class
Going to a movie or a play in my small city (more casual than larger city)

All right! Good points so far. Isn't it amazing how we think of our entire lives as casual, but do not think about the type of casual? Yes all could be done in jeans. But would we? Why?
Parsley that is an astute comment about the clothes constraints imposed by cooking vs being invited over. Heat: I never think of that one, but so true!
I always remember a very cool friend who had us for a dinner among friends once, was cooking, wearing a long, flowey designer black dress, no or almost no makeup, bare feet. (She's on the tall side). So stylish!

No wonder I struggle to keep my wardrobe interesting, almost 100% of what I do could be done in a pair of jeans! Thank goodness for YLF and all the inspiration found here.

This is an interesting exercise, Krishnidoux! Even though there's a lot of overlap, I realize that each activity requires its own capsule.

Here are mine:
Work (scrubs)
Hanging out at home
Running errands, shopping
Picking up grandkids from school
Taking grandkids to lessons/sports
Going to friends' house for casual evening
Having friends over (different, because it involves cooking)
Going out to dinner- casual weekday and sharper "date night"
Fundraiser evenings (dressy)
Weddings
Opera/ symphony/ ballet performances
Farmer's market
Walking for exercise
Yoga
Tennis
Bicycling
Swimming at the swim club
Pool parties at friends' houses
Travel- city (usually Paris)
Travel- rural, small town (often Provence)
Beach vacation

It's interesting to realize that for example I would wear one sort of outfit to friends' house for dinner, but I need something different if I'm cooking at home (something that I can prepare and serve food in without ruining it, and that isn't too hot).

Also, with summer approaching, I need a swimsuit capsule for going to the pool, swimming laps, playing in the pool with grandkids: modest and utilitarian.
And another swimsuit capsule for evening pool parties: a prettier suit, and more glamorous cover-up.

It's good to look at all these activities and make sure I've got them all covered with appropriate clothing.

Ok, I'll give it a go. I hope I remember everything. I will pop back to edit if something else comes to mind.

Working from home sewing
Seeing customers at home for fittings, need to be smart and maybe wear my own creations.
Doing the school run
Visiting doctor
Visiting dentist.
Doing housework
Evening in a pub
Out for a meal
Friends house for meal
Exercising at home
Out for a walk
Out to a music concert, usually pop or rock not classical.
Shopping for food
Shopping for clothes
Gardening
Holiday abroad each year

Thats about it. Some of the things listed aren't done very often. I love to be dressed up but to be honest I don't think my lifestyle really calls for it. I prefer to be overdressed than under. But I am making an effort to get a few more casual options.

Hi, Krishnidoux, my daily life is pretty casual but I try to dress smart casual like Angie's MOTG most of the time. An average day could include:
Housekeeping/cooking/cleaning/laundry/gardening/dog walking
Walking about 2 miles on a trail or a treadmill
Other exercise at a gym
Teaching children, meaning I spend time on the floor
Shopping and errands
A movie, play, concert, eating out, outdoor fairs and festivals
Attending Mass
Church related meetings and small groups
Various club meetings, usually all women who dress up a bit.
Volunteer activities, especially at Holiday time
Farmers market and day trips
Hosting friends and relatives at home
That's all off the top of my head. A pair of dark jeans and cute flats can get me through most of the activities with the right top and accessories, so they are an important part of my wardrobe.

Really interesting! For me:

Writing in coffee shop
Tango classes
Tango dance (in the future--would be dressy but a very specfic, and functional, look)
Outdoor concerts this summer (can be casual, will involve sitting on blanket on the grass)
Informal teaching of small groups (might be teaching cooking classes with my mom)
Live music concerts (rock, would be informal, obviously, but would want to look cool)
Gardening
Working out
Sailing
Long walks also for me
Bicycle riding
Writing classes (as student)
Etc.

I was leafing through my copy of What to Wear, Where, a book I like because it lists occasions on which to wear what, and these occasions are adapted to our modern lives: Barbecue, Beach and Pool, Cold Weather, Rainy Weather, Errands, Dog Park, Farmers Market... all circumstance my brain would initially classify as "casual", but, as one reads on, have their own special demands in terms of dressing.

Let's do a thread on "occasions". Maybe we could put ours in common and from there, get even more dressing ideas and inspiration adapted to our daily lives.

What are your activities on a daily basis? Put samples of everything, down to the quick Target shopping trip. We'll brainstorm. Nothing is too crazy nor relaxed! Don't censure yourself!

Here is my list, from the top of my head, in my current life:

Teaching at the college (casual, jeans allowed);
Corporate language training in down-town offices (corporate, no jeans);
Departmental reunion (50 pple);
Bringing my son to the orthodontist, doctor, etc;
Going to the gym;
Food shopping;
Clothes shopping;
Commuting to and from work;
Dining out with a friend;
Taking long walks;
Riding bicycle around town;
Cleaning my house;
Dance class;
Concert;
Play (by students);
Meet the Teachers night;
Meeting with the landlord;
Gardening...
