Gosh Irene - I have found my celebrity body double now you have shown us that picture of Keira Knightly! Of course she is slimmer and taller and younger than me, but the basic shape - long torso, full thighs, strong shoulder line, and small bust - is totally the same. The strong shoulder line does mean that we aren't traditional pears though

Keira Knightley is a great example of a very slim pear-shaped woman. Feminine and beautiful

She does have a very strong shoulder-line in this photo though, maybe she was exercising a lot those days lol

The best thing I did was to post photos on this forum and devour the feedback. All the theorising in the world won't teach you what suits; you really have to get in there and try things out.
I know what a big step it is to post WIW's but believe me, it's worth it. Everyone here is courteous and supportive, as evidenced by the responses you have so far. I encourage you to give it a go.

I have to disagree that skinny jeans are only for the very small with no hips. There are ladies of all sizes and shapes in this forum that rock skinny jeans. It's all in the fit and the styling.

I have a pear shaped figure just like you. I ALWAYS go for dark jeans. They will be your BFF. They will instantly slim your lower half and NEVER EVER wear skinny jeans which will make the hips look bigger in proportion. I'm on the slimmer side as well so jackets will be your best friend. Your shoulders will look broader which will make the hips look small. A bootcut jean or maybe even a straight leg will work for you. Skinny jeans are only for size 00, 0, 2, and 4 people with no hips. Wear bright colors on top and make your lower half dark (navy, black). Instead of tight pencil skirts, an A line will take the emphasis off of hips. Shift dresses are also good for you while sheath dresses will bring the attention towards them. I even wear same color shoes as pants to make legs look slimmer and longer. Hope this information helps you out. Have a good day.

I love the way a full skirt looks on those with long, slim waists. That is a look you could try. Check out the skirt Angie is wearing in today's blog post; that's the kind I'm talking about.

Hi Lilypat, thanks for your message- and tips about wearing structured bottoms with less structured tops. I will try this! If I have any successful outfits I will be sure to let you know.
I am hoping to get some tips on bathing suits if anyone has any ideas. What style of bikini do you wear?

Marieque, your question inspired me to join the forum--though I've been reading for a long time. I thought I was the only skinny pear out there! I'm 5' 7" , 120 lbs., and also have a large, round bum, pointy hips and legs that are bigger than my twig-like arms. ( I envy you your C cups, tho--I'm an A on a good day.) I have a short body and long arms and legs, too--think spider monkey--so it's really difficult for me to find clothes that fit. I live in a warm climate so jackets are pretty much out, but I think I look more "balanced" in tailored/structured bottoms and tops that are less structured, with some movement and color. Hope this helps!
Welcome! Ditto to what everybody else said about Angie's Pretty Pear guidelines and shoulder detailing for visual balance.

Also, ditto to what Caro said. I'm from the Northern California Bay Area, where such a womanly figure is idealised. You'd be a goddess here. So, you know, enjoy your shape Lot of power in that.
Welcome from a fellow pear!
I agree with the advice above - structured jackets are your friends! And don't discount shoulder pads either, especially if your shoulders also happen to slope like mine.

Another formula that works well for me is structured on top and flowy/drapy on the bottom.

I think the best advice I've learned is to avoid buying things that are too tight on the bum. It may sound counterintuitive but the too-small clothing will pull and stretch and make your bottom look bigger than it is.

I kind of relate. I'm not so skinny anymore and my volume is in my thighs rather than the bum, but I know what it's like to feel like you want to balance things out a bit. I don't know what your climate is like, but I LOVE structured jackets for defining my shoulder line and balancing out my lower half.

As the others have suggested, Angie's guidelines are helpful. Plus, if you'd like to post outfit pictures here, the forum members here are extremely supportive and have great suggestions.

Hi from another pretty pear Fabber!
You are lucky to have a medium sized bust for sure.
Don't try to diet- more structured jackets are trending, so go for well defined shoulders and lots of detail on your top half.
Darker coloured bottoms will play down your hips if you want.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I can empathise. I am also a member of the bigger bottom and thighs club, am only an A cup on top and can easily fall into the bony chest look with weight loss!

Have you checked out Angie tip's for pretty pears yet?
Here is her original post http://youlookfab.com/2006/04/21/the-pretty-pear/
but if you type in Pretty pear you will come up with lots more!

I'm 5'7, with very slim waist, legs, arms- but my bum is large and round and my hips are very far apart/wide and pointy.

I feel very out of proportion because of my extra big bum and inner/outer thigh area- I would actually rather gain weight everywhere else to balance my hips- so it's not about wanting to be thinner! When I eat more, my problem area just expands and everything else is still twiggy. When I lose weight, my legs and arms look too thin, and my C-cup boobs lose their fullness..But of course the butt remains unaffected!
Imagine a thin woman with hips so far apart there should be a thigh gap, but it's somehow filled in with blubber. Now imagine what on earth she should be wearing ;p If you can, please send me some fashion ideas!!!

:)
