Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Here's a list of Indian clothing stores in the Bay Area. You might need to do some googling to see what's available.

http://www.thingsindian.com/apparel.htm

I've taken friends shopping on University in Berkeley, which is a good place since there are so many stores right next to each other.

Remember that you can always bargain if you are comfortable. In order to know the right price, you can look up some clothes online to get a feel for it. If you buy more than one item or pay in cash (since it saves credit card fees), you'll get a better discount.

I think I got a 20% discount with my mediocre skills but I'm certain my mom would have been able to do 30% or better. Start at 20% but realistically you may only end up with 10% or nothing. Once you've selected what you like, the magic phrase is to request that they "make the price right".

Did you find anything? Diwali just started... Anything dressy and festive would be fine. This is your chance to bring out your sparkly items of clothing and jewelry - modesty is good, but other than that, bring on the bling! It's the Indian New Year, so think of what you'd wear for the holidays.

the mother of one of my piano students just invited my fiance and i to join them for a
family/neighborhood diwali celebration (aka festival of lights). the family is
from india and the mother deepa was so kind to extend the invitation when i expressed interest in learning more about the holiday.

i'd like to find stores in the bay area (san jose, etc...) that sell silky kurti/tunics to wear with my black pants and heels/metallic sandals. does anyone know where of any in this area?

any tips would be such a relief! thank you very much
