I'm not familiar with the place you're going, but I like to dress up and anything like a ballet of opera or the symphony seems to me like something that should be more formal. I wish it weren't so common for people to casually for these kinds of events!

Kkards, that's good to know, thanks!

I just heard that we are expecting 5-8 inches of snow tomorrow, so I will definitely be wearing something boot friendly.

honestly, unless you're part of the under 12 crowd and doing the birthday party thing, i think its pretty much smart casual, and given the weather, jeans would not be out of place. (at least that what i see when i've been matinee's for the symphony)

AM, this will be my first time at the Kennexy Center so I am looking forward to it. I can't wear heels but pencil skirt and boots sounds like a great option!

E, I am so jealous of your silk blouses right now! I have a couple of sleeveless silk blouses but no long sleeves. Maybe I can work one in with a cardigan or jacket.

Summer, smart casual seems to be the way to go, thanks!

Ruth, I was wondering about the birthday party potential of the matinee, lol! And this is a late Valentine's celebration with DH - ballet isn't his thing, but Sleepy Hollow sounded interesting enough that he was willing to give it a try.

Rachy, ha! There is clearly something to be said for a large and eclectic wardrobe. Mine is pretty much jeans, leggings and cocktail dresses for more formal occassions. Finding something out of that range is always tricky!

Personally? White embroidered satin, no diamonds. Normal people, a nice dress and pearls :D

Ballet matinees are sometimes attended by little girls who love to dress up, so a matinee can actually be quite dressy, in a birthday-party sort of way.

However, in the weather conditions you are having, I would absolutely put warmth and comfort first. The suggestions above are all great, and you could add a luxurious or sparkly scarf if you felt like it.

I couldn't resist peeping at the programme. Is it "Sleepy Hollow" - world premiere? How wonderful - have fun!

Lucky you, Dee. I agree that smart casual will be fine. Smart trousers or skirt with a dressier top should work well. Enjoy!

I'd do smart casual separates, and one of those separates would be silk. But I've never been to a matinee ballet performance either, so I could be wrong.

Dee, how fun! The Kennedy Center and the Nutcracker -- great childhood memories. I would probably do slacks (mid-height pumps) or pencil skirt (boots) with a dressy sweater. Or you could do turtleneck with jacket.

I've never been to the ballet before, aside from local performances of the Nutcracker during the holidays. But tomorrow I've got tickets for the Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center. However, it's for the mid-afternoon matinee showing.

What would you wear? If it was the evening I would probably wear a cocktail dress and be done with it but are matinee showings less dressy? Also, it might snow tomorrow, so that will probably limit my options somewhat. Thanks!
