No new ideas and sorry for typos and spell check changes last post. We once had a wedding invitation that called for Hot Dog Stand Formal! Interpretations were so entertaining. The groom’s dad wore denim overalls and a top hat. There was lots of creative denim. We sat on wet hay bales outside for the ceremony followed by a hot dog reception. Any chance of biting insects? Pack insect repellent just in case.

Goodness me, it can be complex.

I would be thinking separates too - my first thought was a maxi silk skirt (in my head it was a dark tartan) with a coordinating fine gauge knit sweater (maybe in forest or burgundy) with hairup and cool earrings. Or with a simple top with a well cut jacket on top (sort of riding style)

Then I imagined myself in the mountains, drinking mulled wine and fondue.....hiking with my cute wool hat...

I also think a cool pants suit would work, one that you could wear afterwards as a suit or seperates.

If it was unseasonally cold I think anything goes including puffers layered over the top.

Okay, the Gorsuch and Brunello Cucinelli recs have been a total rabbit hole. Great inspo!

Laurie, from your description, it sounds like you might have gotten caught in Hurricane Irene -- rain of epic proportions.

Runcarla, that rose quartz outfit is so, so cool! I'll keep the Madewell mary-janes on my list of possibilities. As a jewelry minimalist, adding shine through shoes is probably a good strategy for me.

Great thread. No fashion ideas, just a story - went to an outdoor wedding in NH at an old, musty ski lodge in mid-September about 10 yrs ago. Was so excited for crisp fall weather in New England. It was a lovely setting, but it ended up being a monsoon! Torrential rain and hot and humid. They still had the ceremony outside, and the bridal party did not have umbrellas. The groomsmen were in soggy wool tuxes, and the bridesmaids were completely drenched after having lovely hair and makeup done. It was raining so hard you could not hear the officiant or the vows over the pounding on the umbrellas of the attendees. And - I am not making this up - the bride and groom walked back down the aisle to "Here Comes The Sun". It was so muddy and smelly under the tent for the reception...

I don't remember what I wore, but I think I was really hot all night.

I was googling around for some ideas but I think you might have to wait a month or so for the more fall/festive clothes to start trickling into stores.

I did find this on the Gorsuch site I mentioned earlier - though it looks like the last one from last season, only size 10 left. Just for an idea:
https://www.gorsuch.com/andra-.....p/307.0028

From my not Quaker but still pretty sober Midwestern upbringing, I also blinked at the idea of sequins and glitter for a wedding guest, especially for a daytime celebration. But I still think your glitter shoes would be great, because they’re just one item, and a little cheeky. To me that comes across differently than, say, a sequin-covered top (which might not be what Brooklyn was getting at anyway). But your cousin must know your Quaker background.

Runcarla, that ensemble is making me drool!

Yes, I still have my Madewell mary-janes! I wore them for New Years even though we celebrated via Zoom and no one but DH saw them. :)

I was taught that sequins and glitter are over-the-top for wedding guests (leave the sparkle to the bride), but that could just be a thing within my Quaker fam rather than common etiquette?

I actually wore the glitter pumps to a summer birthday party with the navy two-piece dress. 2019 -- feels like an eternity ago! I added a chunky rose quartz pendant necklace to tie in the shoe colour and it was hot enough I didn't need to figure out a topper (but it was such a low-key event I probably would've just thrown on a chunky cardigan). That was a good outfit, simple and fun.

Didn’t you get some sparkly low heeled Mary Janes a few years back for a Christmas/Holiday capsule? Maybe do like Angie suggests for travel outfits and start with the shoes? Maybe a refined combat boot that skews Victorian - like a theatre shoe. I would search thrift - there seems to always be lots of formal wear. If the skirt is long enough, you can actually wear thermal layers and wool socks under.

I still have all the pieces from that NYE wedding outfit (from 2016/2017) - see finds. The heels measure half an inch (low) but are pointy toe and patent leather - a tuxedo shoe. I wore an oversized midi coat to get to the venue (everything was indoors). I would love to own a cape or an opera coat! You could do a soft sweater instead of a button down. A faux fur topper might work, but I don’t think that’s your style.

second @lisa p --ralph lauren the aspen edition or look at brunello cuccinelli for inspiration.

alternatively, wear what you would to a formal wedding (weather permitting) and add small squirrel earrings--or just carry a stuffed chipmunk.

As soon as I started considering "mountain formal" as a theme, the outfit that came to mind is a taffeta ball skirt paired with a crisp tartan shirt, like Angie's black stewart shirt from J Crew. It would be an easy enough outfit to source secondhand, as well, I think. I'd have to figure out shoes, and outerwear that works over a full skirt, but it could be a fun way to go, and would easily accommodate warm baselayers. I recall Runcarla doing a similar Carolina Herrera inspired outfit for a NYE wedding a few years ago. I should go find her post about that event and see what her footwear/outerwear choices were...

Figures you have cool ways to wear the skirt already in your wheelhouse/closet. Do you know CM well, like how long their end of season sale lasts? There's a (pink!) sweater I'd love to get for my son, but he's likely to turn his nose up at anything warm in the summer. This comment made me sad I wouldn’t even go I’d be so flummoxed by what to wear to this event--I'm glad you aren't letting fashion boss you around and keep you from your cousin's wedding!

How do you feel about sequins?

I was thinking dress pants, brogues, silk blouse or cotton shirt and a sequin or metallic blazer. Add a scarf, coat and underlayers if it’s cold. All items you could wear again.

I love the idea of a tuxedo suit but they are usually black and very “event” specific.

Mountain Formal. Yes, I think you will want to pack two or three options to cover the weather possibilities. I really like the pants you ordered. If they are keepers, then I think it will be easy to find a couple of topper options, which will help with temperatures. I like the idea of a fitted jacket or coat. A chamber wrap or cape would also be a good option. For footwear, make warmth the priority. In my mind I am thinking patent leather boots or booties.
I am thinking that a midi or full length dress or skirt might also be a good option, even if you are not leaning in that direction. The length will provide warmth and also allow room for tights or leggings underneath.
I look forward to seeing what you decide to wear!

No extra advice to give on the clothing itself (people seem to have already given good ideas on layers & blazers/ jackets/ coatigans with dressy bottoms) but the one thing I wanted to add is to pack some warm base layers that won't look too out of place if the sleeve or hem does show whilst dancing etc.

In other words, instead of sporty with obvious logos etc, how about a plain silk or merino wool underlayer? Intimissimi seems to have a good selection of thin base layers in natural fibres like silk/ wool/ cotton - as well as some manmade ones like modal/ lyocell - with varying necklines & sleeve lengths.

Sorry the link is for HK, but I have a few of their base layers & they work well for me (they do colours as well as nude tones, & leggings etc too):
When I hear Mountain Formal for a wedding dress code , I think of the Banff Springs Hotel in the Rocky Mountains where formal luxe is the most common way to dress. Maybe a nod to Ralph Lauren with a silk taffeta plaid halter or tank under a navy or black tuxedo , and velvet flats . If this were me , I’d steer way clear of anything even verging on costume territory . No references to mountain climbing or hiking at all . Actually I wouldn’t even go I’d be so flummoxed by what to wear to this event

I like the CM pants you ordered - I'm guessing you ordered them in black/white textured fabric?

I think they'll work well with navy. A navy silk shell and grey embellished sweater? (Don't know everything in your closet - just brainstorming combos). Or a lighter color shell or fancy statement blouse in ivory or pale grey. Just one item in a "luxury" fabric I think can elevate what we consider "office" separates.

Going out on a limb here with ideas:
silver or gold puffer or puffer vest?

I'd personally probably seriously consider wearing my big black velvet trapper hat with pompom ties.:-)

Ack, I lost my post. I love the idea of a tuxedo shit or a velvet pant suit. You could layer to have a few more options for the weather. Wear comfortable footwear that you can dance in. A faux fur coat or jacket is a good idea. In the mountains, earth tones are good. A wool or tweedy pant outfit could be dressed up. Start looking now rather than wait until fall. You may even find something off season on deep discount. Shop your closet first. Wishing you good luck finding something that feels just right

"Mountain formal" is a tricky needle to thread, especially with completely unpredictable weather in the mix! I like your idea of those pleated pants with some sort of cropped jacket. Then you could layer underneath if necessary and wear some warm boots too.

I would probably go with a second-hand full-length skirt (with thermals and warm boots underneath, if necessary) paired with a fancy sweater and/or jacket, and some blingy jewelry. I would think they would be expecting people to get a little creative? People who stipulate "mountain formal" for their wedding have to have a sense of humor, right :)?

My very slim husband tried two suits from Nordstrom Rack (about $100 each) and was able to wear both without alterations. Chose one and sent the other back. We have found that sometimes it is the smallest waist sizes that are the last to go. The CM pants look promising, and Janet's suggestion is great.

Before even reading other responses, I thought of an outfit comprised of something like palazzo pants and a blouse of some sort (raw silk?), with the potential for a cropped jacket, bolero, or blazer over top. If it’s cold, you can add tights under the pants and Uniqlo Heattech under the blouse. Just a thought. Trying to think of simple, elegant pieces in natural fabrics that could be useful to you in the future too.

FI -- I like to wear my dresses and skirts with casual shoes and bare legs (or leggings in the winter). Sneakers, sporty sandals, stompy boots, etc. Basically all the shoes below. I find that pairing a skirt or dress with oxfords feels too school-uniform or school-marm or job-interview, especially once you throw nude hose or sheer black tights into the mix. The oxfords I do like with skirts (the burgundy suede and tweedy black ones below) are very casual.

That silk skirt gets lots of mileage in the summer paired with fitted tank tops, loose button-front shirts, cropped tees, etc. I don't really need it to be dressy to be useful.

I love those pleated high rise pants, and note that they are shown with boots.
If you don’t like the footwear required for your 2-piece dress, why do you keep it? Would it work with dressy oxfords, like my blue ones and Sal’s pink ones? (Im sitting at a restaurant where a young woman just walked in wearing a bias-cut skirt, possibly silk, with white tennis shoes). Let us know how your plans develop.

Argh, I had a nice long response typed up to everyone and then my phone died and I lost it!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks this dress code sounds challenging. I agree that asking for formal at an event with no climate control is... risky? insensitive? Their announcement suggests that guests check the forecast and bring layers, so I guess they're comfortable with people wearing reasonable footwear and outerwear. I hadn't considered the mountain-as-theme aspect that cjh's link describes, but that does give me something to go on.

As to venue, it's not terribly rugged: grassy meadow, gravel paths, gazebo by a pond, that sort of thing. April's description of fall events in the northeast is 100% in line with my experience. Last year we did a birthday party camping trip in White Mountain National Forest the last weekend in Sept. We planned for frosty mornings and then it was sticky hot, 80s and humid the whole time. Never even put on our jackets! The year before that, same dates, I attended an anniversary party at a northern VT campground and it rained the whole time and never got above 50°F. Wore a raincoat all day, even under the tent, because it was too cold to take it off. Give me a casual event any day, so I can just dress for the weather and be done with it. :)

If it ends up being hot, I have a two-piece dress, navy blue raw silk, that could be a good fallback, but it feels a bit plain? I don't really want to buy accessories just for the sake of adding bling. And I'd have to deal with figuring out hosiery and footwear. I'm coming to terms with the fact that I don't like the look of most women's dress shoes, or the feel of most hose; leaning menswear would be easier for me -- dressy chelsea boots, oxfords, wingtips, brogues... but not with a dress, so that leads me to pantsuit/tuxedo options.

I'm in love with the look of the CM trousers below -- the texture, colour, silhouette -- and have two different sizes on order to try (reviews say they run large, but how large?). Maybe they skew too office-y, but I can picture them styled with a silky cami/tank of some sort, or a fitted button-up waistcoat. I'm going to try them on with my navy raw silk tank, and also the floral cami below. I like the idea of them with the black eyelet tank as well, but maybe that's too casual, and too seasonally confused even for September in New England? I wish CM had a coordinating topper in the same fabric, but maybe just a cropped blazer/short drape-y trench would be fine?

I'd love to be able to shop my closet for events like this, but formal is so rare in my world that I don't really have the right stuff on hand. Rent the Runway is maybe a possibility, if I can't find something appropriate that I think I'll be able to remix and re-wear in the future. But not being able to do alterations might make it just as tricky and time-consuming as retail. (DH would love to be able to rent, as he hasn't needed to wear a suit in over a decade and doesn't have one -- but he's such a slim build I doubt he'll find something that fits well without alterations.)

Oh, and to everyone who mentioned alpine/Tyrolean -- that is remarkably spot-on, actually. The groom (my cousin) spent a good part of his 20s living and working in Austria. I don't think he'll be wearing his lederhosen, but he could surprise us. ;)
