Nothing to add except it would be extremely conservative, obviously.

And a hat is almost mandatory if you want to be 'proper'

(i come from working class British roots, even mid to lower class weddings/ events all the women wear hats)

How exciting,is it too forward to inquire what the event is?

I think that the lace dress is lovely! I think Michelle Obama's dress is lace is your inspiration photos. If it is long enough I think it could be perfect! I'm getting a vicarious thrill from your planning. Such a fun event to dress for!

Diana, don't think I can add anything of value to the dress discussion, but can't wait to see what you end up wearing. However I wanted to comment about your hair. I remember reading about how you feel so much more you with shorter hair and after seeing the photo of you with longer hair I wanted to chip in to say I agree, you are so much more YOU with shorter hair.

YES, definitely nude hose. Planning to go to the Rack to stock up this weekend actually. (I'll need them for the wedding too, so that's at least 2 pairs, assuming I don't run one of them putting it on.)

I think a sleeved dress is probably the best bet too. I didn't comment about the dress thing on today's post because I haven't been looking for them, but I guess I will be experiencing this season's dress issues soon enough!

Thanks, Diana. I think a dressier black or navy trench coat is an excellent idea. No need to be colourful at all. (Sorry that the vintage frock is a wrinkling mare).

As for the random question - I'm not sure. I was cold (April in Japan was NOT warm), and I wore my trench coat throughout the wedding festivities, with hose. Ohhhhh - you MUST wear hose. So I was never sleeveless. A sleeved sheath is a much safer bet. xo

Also, random etiquette question. If I were to go for a sleeveless dress with trench like Angie's outfit, would it be appropriate to keep the trench on, even indoors during the event? Or is the jacket strictly outerwear ( in which case i would probably need a jacket as well for warmth)?

Thank you everyone for your insights! They are very helpful. I think I have a better idea of what to look for now - modest, knee-length, a dressier/heavier fabrication. Maybe a sheath is the way to go but I have such a hard time fitting into most of them. I think a shopping trip is in order for the weekend.

So I think outfit #4 will be a good fallback if nothing else works out. I may bring it anyway for the wedding.

Angie, I LOVE your outfit. I have been thinking about getting a spring trench actually. I don't think I have one that would work for this type of outfit at the moment - my red corset trench is a little too casual and funky/not elegant enough, I think. Ideally I'd get the black Burberry Buckingham but it's a bit out of my price range right now. But in any case... do you think a black or navy trench would work in this type of outfit or would it need to be a brighter color to be more dressy? Because for my everyday life I'd want black or navy... or teal of course but that's a bit difficult to find!

The cobalt dress is not an option unfortunately. It's just too wrinkly. I'm not going to an event where the Queen might see me in a wrinkled dress!

SO EXCITING. Congrats. Take me with you in your suitcase?

I like the cobalt vintage dress best. How killer is that slash neck with the diagonal sleeves on your dainty shoulder line. WOW. Not to mention the colour. But how does it look with a topper? I like the first two outfits you posted too - but they look too breezy for London in May - and possibly a bit casual. (Yes - always cold me is speaking up).

I would wear something like I wore to the wedding in Japan a few years ago - sheath and trench - and leave off the pearls. It's a warmer combination.

Diane needs to chime in! I think Kate Middleton is the way to go and that #4 would be fine and preferable to #5 (which is too business-y). A very nice daytime dress with sleeves or jacket, or feminine suit (not too Eastery IMO). Closed-toe shoes, no showing shoulders to God and Queen ;)

Prince Andrew is/was a patron of my high school, as a Round Table school. But children at school get to dress slovenly, hehe.

Michelle Obama's another example of what would be appropriate in my mind.

How very exciting! I'm not sure how the dress code has changed over the years but it is a formal event. The time of day dictates for men evening=white tie, afternoon=black tie and morning equals morning dress which is still tails.
Kate Middleton is a great example as she has changed things to be more modern while still being conservative and formal. The Queen's garden party would be a good example of morning dress. I'd say any royal wedding in the morning would also be a good example.
Hats used to be mandatory and you're in England so hats are the cat's meow.
What springs to mind, while not fashion forward, are Talbot's Dupioni silk dresses with matching jackets. That would be the style sheet I would work from to try and make it more modern. I believe the jacket should not just be thrown on but an integral part of the outfit.

How exciting and fun! I like your floral dress best of the two. I think this would be an awesome opportunity to shop. I love the brocade or polished cotton suggestion. If you could get a matching coat, that would be fab in my opinion --- I love the look and it looks very polished.

I am so excited for you! Just the trip itself is exciting but this will be the ultimate add on. I think a dress in a woven fabric that is cut to knee length would be a good choice. I like the both dresses you show but if you can shop and find something slightly dressier that would be the icing on the cake.

I do also have this vintage dress, which is silk and appropriately dressy, but it wrinkles like crazy if you so much as look at it wrong. Last time I wanted to wear it, I gave up because I couldn't iron the wrinkles out without creating new ones. I shudder to think what it'll do after being stuffed in a suitcase.

But do you think something in this shape would work? (Assuming I can find it of course).

How fun! My Scottish grandmother and aunt in-law were invited to a garden party with the queen that I'm pretty sure called for the same dress code. They busted out hats.

I think you can get good hats in the states (especially around the Kentucky Derby or Easter), but transporting them would be a pain, and it helps to build the outfit around the hat. My memory from their pictures were fit and flare dresses in heavy cottons or silks with a little bit of sheen? They also wore nice tailored jackets or coats that looked more wedding-y than business-y. Of your outfits I like the shape of #4 the best but I'm not sure about the skirt material. I'm thinking more formal garden party/wedding clothes might be a bit closer to the look than business clothes.
