Do you have a long, black slinky skirt? I would start with that with maybe some sheer hosiery and heeled black booties. Something sparkly on top under a cropped, relaxed blazer?

Have you ever seen old movies with a burlesque scene in it? There's one in "Imitation of Life." The audience looked to be dressed in cocktail attire. (Pic #1). Some other ideas -- Gloria Grahame in "In a Lonely Place" (Pic #2). Or, Nicolas Ray, director of said movie and married to Gloria Grahame --now there's an androgynous look to aspire to. (Pic #3).

I also just watched "Niagra" (Pic #4) with Joseph Cotton and Marilyn Monroe, she's got some great 50s outfits that would look cool at a Burlesque show. It doesn't have to be exact period attire, you're referencing it rather than replicating it.

As a former dancer myself (not burlesque though) I would feel more flattered if someone dressed up even if dressing modestly was meant to help the performers stand out. The more the audience makes something feel like an "event," the more the performers feel energized and appreciated. It's not a wedding where you're just not supposed to upstage the bride.

A friend of mine is a burlesque dancer and when we go to the shows we see all sorts of outfits. It's a good opportunity to wear something you love but don't often get a chance to wear because it's too high-drama or edgy, etc. People-watching is one of the attractions of the show, so wear something worth looking at

I'd also guess that it's the sort of crowd where strangers will appreciate it if you ask about their outfit, since they've probably gone to a lot of trouble to look nice for the event.

I'd love to see a pic of what you decide on!

Bowler hat, bustier, kohled eyes, fishnets, lace up booties, plus a bit of Liza Minelli in Cabaret. You could work your Sass and Bide thingummywhatsit into the mix for a striking black and white mix.

Whatever makes you feel great and shows off the curves! Also, I have been to burlesques where audience interaction or flinging things (like candy) or spraying things (like champagne) happens, so nothing you can't dry clean.

I have a friend who does burlesque.

I think almost anything in your closet would work for this, honestly. But something with a bit of a fun, irreverently feminine vibe would be especially suitable.

Ah-hah! In my free time I do some burlesque emceeing under the nom d' burly-q Sadie von Scrumptious.

Velma's ideas are all perfect. IMHO crowd-watching and the chance to dress up are part of the fun of going to a burlesque event. Some events have "Best Dressed" competitions, which can add to the pressure. Dress up in an evening gown or a retro-look dress or top/skirt. 1930s, 1950s, "Mad Men" are all great inspirations.

Some look ideas from a standard wardrobe:
* A little black dress accessorized with all those bits you never get to wear - fishnets, shiny evening clutches, fascinator hats, accent belts, evening gloves. If you don't have accessories, maybe a friend can lend. In the burly-q scene we are always lending each other bits and bobs.
* A pencil-skirt and a form-fitting jewel-toned sweater, with tall pumps and pearls.

Your hair and makeup are quite as important as your outfit. Hair should be "done"; makeup should be, too, including nails and toes.

Have a great time!

I would go relatively understated for this, actually. Stuff you feel really . . . cool in, not stuff you feel hot or edgy or avant-garde in. I think I would want to feel like no one would look at me and think I was trying to compete with the dancers.

Sleek cocktail dress and/or Madmen style afternoon or evening wear--be elegantly retro and quietly sexy, not stripper-esque. High heels and a little hat would not run amiss!

One of my dear old friends does burlesque and owns a burlesque-oriented business, so I actually know a small amount about this.

Do you have a bustier or corset-like thing? Or anything slightly sexy with lace, satin, etc? However, don't sweat it (unless you're actually up on stage!) I was at a burlesque event recently and people were just dressed up for a night out. So whatever signifies "fun" to you should do it.
