Oh.. what a lovely ideia! I hope you'll have tons of fun!
You can always wear a black pencil skirt with high waist a blouse tucked in and pearls but a dress is so much fun:

Here is a link to a retro dress shop. Hope it helps.

Hi hederka, I attended a 1950s costume party/ murder mystery party last November and this is what I wore: http://adressandabike.wordpres.....flashback/

My general approach was to look at photos of celebrities from the 1950s and read up about the fashions of the era (mainly because I'm a history nerd!).

Pencil skirts, pearls and high heels were the definite markers of the era for women over 20. You could also look at the younger fashion of full skirt, bobby sock and ponytails.

I'm not sure if you want to buy something new but I have seen a website that sells clothing that looks like reproduction of that era. I do not remember the name of the site, you might find it if you google around a bit.
You could also maybe google to just find pics of clothing from the era to copy. Maybe a shirtdress with pearls a la June Cleaver?

I've been invited to a cocktail party for some married friends who are both turning 50. The invitation asked everyone to dress in cocktail attire from the couple's birth year, 1959, and specifically mentioned skinny ties and pearls. I'm excited about going to this party, but I don't think I have anything appropriate to wear. I'm also twenty years younger than the birthday couple, fresh out of grad school, and don't want to spend much money on this unless I get a piece I can wear again and again.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I could pull together to look polished and somewhat 1950s era? I am open to literally anything. Thanks!
