Angie, my chuch is extremely casual. People will be wearing everything from jeans and t-shirts to, at the most, casual cotton skirts. This includes baptisms. The baptism is just a short portion of the ceremony that is enclosed in the rest of the normal service. I want to be a tad dressier than normal, but not much.

Unfortunately, this shopping trip was a total fail. My sister and I scoured Robson and Pacific Centre (minus the Bay) for three and a half hours and found NOTHING. So many cap sleeves, overpriced thin cotton things, shapeless or baggy silhouettes, loud tacky prints, short short skirts, unflattering waistlines, etc. I did see one pretty cotton sleeveless shirt dress at Jacob that could work. It comes in white and traffic cone orange. I MIGHT go back for the white version tomorrow. It would work with the Brulees. Otherwise, instead of a dress which would be my preference, I might try to find a top to work with my dark denim J Crew pencil skirt.

The only thing I bought was a cute top at Jacob for the picnic. I'll post pictures soon.

Hmm. To me Brulees are casual. I have been to one Baptism in America and it was Greek Orthodox. It was fancier than the posh weddings I have attended. Baptisms in other parts of the world are quite dressy too. Not sure what is expected in your neck of the woods!

Thanks everyone! Kari, all those dresses are great, and sleeveless sheath dresses are fine, just not spaghetti straps, so I'll check CM and everywhere else on Robson. I can always wear a cropped short sleeved cardi or pashmina during the service.

Angie, do you think the Brulees are dressy enough for the baptism? I will wear them tonight to try on with things. I did see some amazing cream peep-toe heels with black piping on West 4th (my street) that are very tempting. And, yes, the big department store is the Bay--it can be overwhelming, but I'll give it a shot if we have time.

I'm so excited to go shopping properly for the first time since the Chickadee arrived! My beautiful sister is coming along to help. I'll post results later.

Get yourself off to Robson and start the shopping process, Bri! Lots of fab options have been suggested. I can't remember the name of your "Macys" up there but it's a fabulous department store. Hmmm. It’s not Holt Renfrew but the other one. The Bay or something?

o	Leggings and a silky tunic or dress with flats for the shower (add a cardi if it’s cold)
o	Frock and heels for the baptism

Brianna, for the park, would a smart casual version of Angie's "Mom on the go" formula work – such as clamdiggers or a casual skirt + cute top + cropped jacket?

I went shopping with friends in Vancouver in late May and saw a ton of cute dresses and skirts at Mexx and Esprit in varying levels of formality and plenty of bright colors. (This is the one I ended up with, but I think it would be too bare for you.) Mexx also had some sleeveless dresses like this that I could see looking very church-appropriate with a lightweight shrug or cropped jacket, and although I didn't see this one in the store, it's one that I would try.

My friend got some pretty polka-dotted button-downs from Esprit that I could see looking very cute with walking shorts. Banana Republic has some pretty dresses and quite a few on sale on their website, but it's really hit or miss as far as sale inventory in stores.
I wasn't terribly enthused with the dress selection at French Connection or Zara, but Zara had great selection in tops & jackets. At Club Monaco I spotted but didn't try on some BEAUTIFUL white dresses both in the main store & on the sale rack, but I believe the ones I saw were sleeveless sheath dresses.

For the outdoor event, I'm definitely thinking of a more casual look. If I wear a dress or skirt it needs to be leggings-friendly because we might end up sitting on blankets on the grass or something.

For the baptism, something dressier. I've thought on it and I think anything light or bright is fine for the baptism--I just don't want to wear black, navy, grey, dark brown, or other dark colours. It's probably better to avoid a solid white or off-white dress so that I can reuse it for weddings in future summers. I'd definitely prefer a dress for this event.

Inge, the MEXX dress is pretty! I'm not sure how well the little sleevelet things would work with my strong shoulders, though.

Wow, such an exciting and beautiful weekend ahead of you Brianna! Quick question: are you looking for something dressy or more of a casual look for the baby shower/picnic? Dress or skirt or trousers?

I like this dress from Mexx but maybe it's not 'special' enough for this occasion?

On Saturday my sister is holding a baby shower/picnic/get-together for me, my husband and our daughter at a local park. The venue is a big grassy field and a covered area with picnic tables. We'll be visiting, playing games like croquet and bocci, eating, and showing off the baby. The weather should be warm and sunny. The only element I have for this outfit so far is a large straw hat. I have two pairs of flat sandals: champagne Me Too Kali thongs, and Naot Valeries in lead.

And then, on the 28th, our baby is being baptised at our home church in Vancouver Island. The church is casual (people wear jeans to the services and our priest wears Birkenstocks under his robes!), but this is a very special and important event and I'd like to wear something special. We'll be taking lots of photos afterwards that will be keepsakes for ever. I do not want to wear anything with bare shoulders or spaghetti straps, since I'll be in church. I'd prefer a dress for the sake of simplicity. The ceremony is in the morning and baptisms are typically associated with white so I'd like to wear a light coloured outfit (not necessarily white). The only element I have so far for this outfit is a pair of pewter Brulees (I finally caved and ordered them when I found them for $65 online with free shipping!). I also have a pair of red leather wedges with brown soles. I would prefer something elegant and unfussy. I do own a strand of pearls, too.

There's going to be a tea in my mom's backyard that afternoon, so I need something to wear to that as well if the church outfit won't do.

I'm going shopping on Wednesday. Help! Ideas for items you've seen in stores that exist in Vancouer are especially appreciated--I don't want to order something online. I will definitely go to Club Monaco, Zara, H&M, Banana Republic, French Connection, MEXX, the Gap, and Jacob.
