Lol. The doom rolling in!

All my puffies are really light weight ones. Thing is, I hate drafts. So they're long and look very wintery. I wish I'd wear a shorter one, but I've learned I just won't. I wonder if anyone makes a long puffer vest? And if I'd wear a vest as my outerwear...

After my mother's fall, I went down to see her and I saw several people in down jackets. They were the thin lightweight kind like this. Here's the view from her window. You can see the fog. I loved it because it was over 100F at home.

I wore wool coats in college, but I have become a weakling. Even that won't do it...or perhaps more likely, the coats are thinner now. I can't find gabardine anymore, on a tangent.

I miss my F21 puffer vest. It's gone now. It was a bit girly with ruffles at the shoulders and I had one of those horrible city accidents...got some tar or gum on it. Yucky.

I go with layers. I'm always in a/c too cold for me. I start with a tank top, add a three quarter sleeve shirt, then put a blazer, cardigan, or poncho on top. And I stick to full length or cropped bottoms. I let the colors not the materials be my nod to the season.

Yes, I agree with layers. The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in SF, as the saying goes. I don't even separate out my wardrobe by season because it's often colder in the summer than in the winter. (And yes, we go from turning on the heat one day to cursing our lack of AC the next). I live up on a hill and it's always foggy and freezing in the morning, then when I go to work, it's sunny and broiling. I like to wear a cardigan over a dress (I have some from Vince and Helmut Lang) and sometimes add leggings and stompy boots. Or you can never go wrong with a leather moto (as long as you can ditch it when the temperature rises). I have a Vince sweatshirt, but then what do you do when it's super hot later in the day?

I dress like I would in spring or fall. I don't really differentiate between seasonal clothing, although some items work better across the seasons, of course. I pick my outfit depending on the weather and not anything else. That's why my spring and summer looks are often darker or less "summer like" than others on the forum, but I don't really care.

If I had to recommended one piece of clothing for a cool summer day it would be a wool camisole, I love mine.

Btw, we have central heating and in summer it's turned down almost completely. I have a bit more leeway in the bathroom, but otherwise I have to compensate with my dressing. A few weeks a go I was wearing a tee, shorts and sandals outside and warm socks, long pants and a wool pullover inside (the building is slow to heat up when summer temperatures arrive).

Rachy .... I have spent a bit of time in the bay area of northern California ..... the climate there is similar to what we have in northwestern Germany that faces the North Sea.

One fun casual style that has popped up here is that some people are wearing summery dresses with a pair of jeans underneath to get that summer feel and yet still not be freezing!

Happy July 4th to you!

Oh all right people. Lol. I guess I *am* a dress person in summer. Make me wear pants and thermal stockings! I'm thinking about being spendy tho and buying white sneakers. Maybe that would make things more summery in my head.

Alexandra - I like to suffer, lol. I only turn on the heat in January, in the dead of winter. Lolol. In my head, I live in Victorian times and am saving on coal lumps. Hahaha!

Rachy, what do you mean, you can't turn on the heat because it's summer? I turn on the heat when it's cold and the A/C when it's hot, regardless of season. No reason to suffer just because mother nature won't get with the program.

I think it comes down to layers, as Staysfit says. Finding the ones that work right for you in your climate. And if it is 55F in summer, then heck, why not just dress as if it is spring? I'd do as Skylurker says:

Start on the bottom with a cami (maybe even a thermal one if you really really run cold, but silk could also work).

Then a shirt/ pullover (some type of top).

Then either a jacket or a sweater. Summerweight cashmere is beautiful, but merino wool is also great, as is the right cotton.

Scarf.

Pants.

Socks.

Footwear could be booties, sneakers, oxfords, etc.

Trench. Because if you live in SF, you need at least one. Excuse to go shopping!

Ooh, I particularly like the idea of a denim look sweatshirt.

To answer the questions - good ones, I might add, have gotten me thinking:

- I wear it all: pullovers, cardigans, sweatshirts, dresses. I am naturally inclined toward dresses, but as I get older, the cold gets to me more. I wear pants more now when it's cold.

- I haven't a cashmere sweater at the moment...last and final one succumbed to the moths. Cashmere really is lovely. I should rectify that situation.

- I don't have a proper real trench coat either anymore. Another situation that ought to be rectified.

- Have never worn chinos, or if I ever did, it was very long ago. Khaki is probably too preppy for me...but I gather there are other colours now?

- A heavier pair of fake denim jeans - should start a hunt for those!

Jeans - but you don't wear jeans, if I remember correctly
- or chinos - do you wear chinos or are they in the repulsive preppy category for you ?

Shirt+blazer or shirt+ cotton sweater/sweatshirt/breton top.

I layer a long cashmere cardigan over whatever I put on. I have some in neutral colors that go with whatever's in my closet. If it's really cold, I might wear a summer weight cashmere sweater if you have one. They come in fun colors. I have two. I think this may be a bit like the freezing a/c I encounter that makes a room feel colder than in winter!

Layers my friend, layers!

Good luck staying warm!

Rachy, are you more of a cardigan person, sweater person, sweatshirt person or do you prefer dresses more?

I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but I don't. I usually have the opposite problem (too warm in winters to wear a coat)!

But, considering that your summer is quite like our winter (chuckles), I have some suggestions.

1) Cute sweatshirt, short skirt & tights. I know, I know.....tights are so silly in *summer*, but this is not a bad idea if you're craving skirts instead of pants.
You could also try a skirt with tall boots, leaving lesser skin bare. I LOVE that look

2) Summery colors in sweaters & sweatshirts. Think chambray, or a denim look sweatshirt, or colors like coral, pale blue, soft pink or mauve, emerald & mint. Yellow or any citron is GREAT in sweaters too.

I came across this article too: http://becomechic.com/20-comfy.....ummer-day/

That's a thought. I could try underlayers under a long dress. Hmm...

Yeah, we've had a couple cold spells too. Not sure if you do dresses but I do maxi skirts and light colored thinner summer sweaters or a long sleeve maxi dress in florals with under layers if necessary.

Right now, Suz, I'm wearing two chunky sweaters! I feel bad about wearing a puffy indoors. My mum asked why I didn't turn on the heat, and I told her I couldn't because it was summer. Lol. Am I making it harder than it needs to be?

I love the idea of emerald. It's true about mariner stripes, tho. I avoid them because I'm so unimaginative when it comes to them. My prep school rearing is a terrible ball and chain. I don't know how I make them look so bad, but I do. Quite awful. Plastic couch cover catalog awful!

Also: good idea about a sleeveless turtleneck. Need to rummage. May be with winter clothes.
