Lisa - I'm definitely brining a pair of booties.

Stat- Hi there. Thanks for the link We went to Lisbon, Portugal last January and it was quite cool. Then we headed to Madeira which was much more warmer. So yes, we have been to Portugal, but not to Porto.

Eliza - I don't plan on taking sneakers, but cute flats, maybe a booties, and comfy loafer/oxfords.

Suz- I had a feeling we will need rain gear so taking a light jacket plus lots of layers.

pirouette - I'm ready to get lots of stops in which I'm sure will include hills.

I second the suggestion for a raincoat. Porto is on the Atlantic seaboard and lots of rain clouds roll in. It’s a beautiful small walkable city and I would recommend visiting the local vineyards that make their delicious Port.

What a great time to go! I was in Spain pre-Covid in October and the weather was great. Some days (and some locations) I needed a sweater or jacket (Madrid, mostly) whereas other locations and days I did not.

My step-daughter lived in Porto for a year. She said the weather was cooler and wetter there than in other parts of Portugal and in Spain (where she also lived). It's a hilly maritime city. So good footwear and layers seem like the key!

Yes to Porto in October! It is a great time to visit, with moderate temps, good for exploring this hilly city. Agree about comfortable shoes being key, as there are lots of charming cobblestones to accompany the chances to climb. We had a rental car with us (had come from the more rural Douro Valley) and never took it out as the city is compact enough to walk most everywhere if you wish. Bringing layers and a light rain jacket, (just in case) makes sense. Either style boots are fine if you think comfort. I wouldn’t skip sneakers for sightseeing; we found Portugal delightful and dressing generally casual.
Enjoy your trip.

Sue Burpee of High Heels in the Wilderness blog (Canada) travelled around Portugal last year early October and the weather was much hotter than she had expected. Looking at the pics again she is in short sleeves and a hat. Perhaps take a look at a weather app, the forecast for October being quite far in the future will be based on historical averages. I am not sure about Portugal but many Med countries, and us on the Black Sea, have experienced a hotter and longer summer than ever this year. We still have not cooled down as much as we usually do by now and are expecting a hotter than ever September which may carry into October. Hope this helps. This link is to her blog post specifically about Porto. I don't know that she mentions clothes in this post, although does mention a laundromat. She had a number of Portugal posts. Have you been to Portugal before?

I would definitely recommend comfortable walking shoes. There's a lot of walking in Portugal. Both flat booties or Chelsea boots sound like good options. I also always like to bring layers so that I can take something on or off depending on the weather and if I am inside or outside buildings. An October trip sounds lovely!

Hi all. We are heading to Porto, Portugal the first week of October. I hear the weather will be quite nice ranging from warm to cool.

DC is currently are experiencing a cool 70+ degree weather day and am thoroughly enjoying it. I assume Porto will be like this but not sure, so probably layering gear. What about flat booties or chelsea boots?

Let me know your thoughts.
