How exciting! Lots of great suggestions here. I taught in Italy last summer and don't have too much to add. I always tend to dress up a bit, skirts, loose top & a scarf. Linen & natural fabrics. I wore black with colorful scarfs & fit right in.

Flat sandals are very popular, all colors and especially metallics. Lots of Birks--even the italians wore them. Sneakers were also popular, usually a classic leather style. A cross body or satchel bag big enough to hold water, book, camera & scarf. I would often wear a sleeveless top + skirt & carry a linen or lightweight blouse to cover up as necessary--August sun is brutal

For museums, I would reserve the Uffizi in the morning, and then later the Accademia as it is smaller and takes less time to visit. There are so many sights, the Bargello and Galileo museums are fantastic, as are the Boboli gardens it just depends on your interests!

I agree with Lesley; I saw so much color in Italy and only very elderly ladies wore much black. If i can ever go back i will wear red pants! Have a steak at least once in Florence. I ate a steak with white beans that had me mooing with pleasure. And of course you should visit the Museum of Costume and Fashion in the Pitti Palace.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I know Rome very well (I lived there twice) and less Florence, but I would ditch the LBD in favor of a colorful, white, or patterned dress! Black is used a lot less in Italy... it reads as a boring color, like you're a member of the clergy. When I moved there in my 20s I was mocked for my nun-like style (lots of black and skirts to the knee...it had felt edgy in NYC!). They have a ton of fun with fashion over there. Make yourself a capsule that feels like your most fun stuff and you will be ready! There is a level of formality there, especially Florence, where despite the heat, you won't see casual things like tees or tanks, except for the tourists. Go for dresses or *real* tops.

I haven’t been to Florence, but my impression is that while skirts and dresses are fine, summer weight pants are too. Main thing is the length.

Take along a couple of your big scarves to drape over your shoulders in places where it’s hot but coverage is required (that said, the churches from the 12th through 19th centuries that I’ve been in have had one thing in common—very mild temperatures, because the thick stone walls prevent them from temp extremes.)

Have fun—looking forward to more posts as you prep.

ETA Highs will be 4 degrees warmer than in Toronto in August, but it will cool off at night, to the same temp as T-dot. florence august temperature. Source: I googled “florence august temperature” and clicked on graphs. Annoyingly, I can’t figure out the url.

I echo everything said here. It will be hot hot hot! And so amazing. The Duomo is jaw dropping. You will walk miles and miles on cobblestones and climb a million stairs. Wear supportive shoes. Jeans are way too hot. Every type of fashion is represented so wear what makes you feel fab but be comfortable! The food is divine. We love Rick Steeve’s tourbooks and audio tours. Enjoy every moment!

We love Italy! Living very close by we have managed to stop there a few times and it looks like we will be doing it again this summer (July not August though). Anyway, Florence is absolutely stuffed with tourists from all over. I suggest comfortable shoes for uneven pavements and for night as much heels as you can bear - at least if you want to look local .
Most helpful tip: pre-book and buy tickets for your visits to museums or other tourist sites that need tickets on the internet. You can breeze right past the block long lines and see Michelangelo's David, the Ufizzi etc. Generally speaking internet research really helps in Italy from public transport to the best gelato.
Second best tip: allow your Italian hosts if you have them, or the reception desk at the hotel, advise you.
Third tip: wine, gelato and pizza. Ahhhh!

Another thought on Florence. Do not be surprised if Italian men there want to make love to you. Never be out alone. They might not even put off if your husband is with you, but being alone is asking for trouble.

Florence may be full of Americans. Many students doing a semester their. In August it may be better or their families may be visiting. Have gelato. Wear dresses and skirts. No one wears shorts. They are not allowed on men or women in many places, especially churches. Much of the food , like pizza, was Americanized, probably because of all the students. Noisy at night. Wear supportive shoes for those cobblestones.

Agree with Cardiffgirl. Much like other cities, think sleek and cool. Linen is a great choice. I found the Italian women to dress more formally - kind of a NY-Paris vibe. It IS super hot in the summer. Killer sunglasses de rigeur.
Have a wonderful trip!

Oh lucky you!l love Italy.lt will be very hot in August probably high 20s/low 30s.Your pared back style is perfect for Italy.l would suggest a killer pair of sunglasses .The Italians are always wearing theirs even if it’s perched on their heads.Simple sheath dresses in Linen are a good idea, skimming not clinging, cut is everything, good quality leather shoes and a bag in neutral colours,a nice silk scarf to tie around your hair/neck or handbag strap, subtle jewellery. No frills, flounces or garish outfits, think Euro chic!

Fun! You will love Florence. If you use Facebook or Instagram, consider following @girlinflorence. She also has a blog with many seasonal travel suggestions and a regularly updated restaurant guide, but I like how her social media -Instagram in particular-shows what people are wearing out and about (It’s NOT a style blog, but you can see what tourists and locals are wearing in many of her photos). The photos will also get you excited for the trip!

Definitely lower heel comfortable sandals for uneven streets. I find jeans too hot for summer travel - I would tend towards dresses, skirts and tops, cropped pants with some ease.

Florence is my favorite Italian city, (except for all the tourists.) I remember that a bought a beautiful leather bag there--unlike anything I'd ever seen here. I also bought some jewelry, including a gold and sapphire snake ring that I still wear, bought on the Ponte Vecchio. Lots of good advice above.

For August it will definitely be hot and a/c is not guaranteed. I stuck mostly to maxi dresses or longer skirts and was comfortable. You can also get away with a light wrap for church visits.

Thanks everyone! I've added to my list:

a lightweight linen long-sleeved blouse,

a lightweight scarf or very fine cardi for coverage (that goes with the day dresses),

a packable straw hat,

not-too-hot flats for day that are not sporty or Birks,

lightweight and comfy day dresses,

sandals for evening.

I have white jeans/cropped pants which will be good, and an LBD that I can dress up as needed. Plenty of bug spray and SPF in stock in this house all summer. You guys are getting me very excited about this - of course worry-wart me jumped over happy and went straight to the problems and logistics lol - poor old DH He's very patient with me ha!

I have been in Florence in August. Very hot, very crowded, looong queues for galleries and museums if you don't book in advance. Scarf should be enough for coverage. Summer dresses with some flat sandals sounds right. Hat can be useful for lot of walking in the sun. No advice for cocktail attire.

How fun, Helena :)

I was in Italy in July last year for two weeks. Amalfi Coast. LOVED IT!

IT WAS HOT & HUMID. No a/c. Lots of walking on cobbled streets and up and down stairs. Lots of very stylish people. Fashion show every moment of the day.

ETA: Happy to fine tune the details of the travel capsule with you. MUST WEAR VERY COMFY SANDALS. These saved my feet:

I was in Italy the first week of September, eons ago. It was very warm, but not horribly hot. Yes to comfy shoes. I wore dresses and had a little cotton jacket, and that was perfect. Jeans might have been too warm. We walked and walked all day long. Actually, we all lost weight! In Florence I bought little boxes covered with Florentine paper. I still have them, and use them to keep jewelry sorted.

Light layers. It will definitely be hot for walking around, but you'll need to be prepared for museums and churches. A secure crossover bag is always a good idea in a sea of people.

More importantly, get ready for the markets! Leather handbags, jackets, belts, wallets, travel accessories can be both well-made and fabulous bargains. The Leather Tool School is also a fab place to get some excellent workmanship for less than designer pricing. The markets are also a great place to find scarves, both woolies and silks. Ponte Vecchio if you're looking for gold jewelry. Have a wonderful time.

Cobblestones are killer - be well shod. Otherwise, the ideas you have for clothes are good. If it's too hot to cover your shoulders all day, a lightweight scarf will do for visiting churches.

Other advice: Book any major museums in advance, if you plan to go to them (maybe your trip will have that all planned out). I can't stress this enough.

Surely Kate has visited Italy? This seems like a great excuse to dive down a Pinterest rabbit hole!

My visit to Italy was more of the business casual meetings followed by hiking in cinque terre type, so I don’t have much concrete advice. I will be reading this thread with interest!!!
