April, you are funny!

My son was thinking of a kayak

But seriously, I’m wondering if we should reschedule yet again. If we do, we might just push it back a week. Our plane tickets can be changed once.

Thanks everyone! We will be looking at schools in & around Boston and DC, as well as some in-between (like in NYC & B’more). After reading your comments, my original list doesn’t sound so bad after all. What do you see that should be changed? I’ve very unsystematically added pix & finds that include most of these items. Is this roughly the way people there interpret these temps? White jeans show up in several photos, but are not on the list. I might add pinstriped G-stars (last pic).

•Cream J Petermann silk midi skirt with stitched-down pleats (might replace with navy J Petermann above-knee silk skirt with stitched-down pleats)
•24 Colours dark background floral midi skirt
•Red flare pants (might replace with red patterned satin pants)
•J Crew Factory long shorts with botanical print
•Red patterned Desigual dress?
•White tuxedo button-down shirt?
•White & black linen loose knit bodysuits
•Cream Intimissimi cotton/silk tank
•White J Peterman linen button-front shirt
•Navy & berry Paisley sleeveless top
•LS blackberry T
•Pink cotton cardi
•Fringe sleeveless top
•Raspberry cotton/silk pullover sweater (barely visible under red jacket in pic)?
•Cranberry knit T/light sweater?
•Blackberry silk/wool cardi
•“Baja topper” loose knit cotton sweater
•Flower or brocade belt
•Burgundy tights
•Black/navy tights
•Red sandals
•Cognac shoes
•”Leopard” trucker jacket or suede jacket
•Might add a jumpsuit

Laurie, thanks! I’ve been looking forward to this for literally years. I hope you’re right about the weather all along the route.

Nancy W, thanks for the guidance. Part of his “issue” buying clothes now is that he hasn’t decided what he wants to support with his purchase dollar. You mentioned one of the schools he’s looking at in that area. We might try the second hand shops there, and then hit a chain store that has “ethical” lines.

JennaDubs, thank you. Good thing I like layering!

Shiny, that gorgeous apartment you showed us a while ago is in Boston? Cool! Giving me a whole list is much appreciated. I will have the old rain jacket with me, so I can compare and contrast with the pile waiting for me at my parents, but that’s another post.

Boston checking in. The weather can be quite variable in September. I'd adopt a layering strategy. Here's what I'd pack:

1. A pair of jeans
2. Cotton short sleeve tops/tanks (tops that you can layer)
3. A pair of shorts
4. Those lightweight merino wool sweaters from BR
5. A lightweight topper (I like my moto jacket that's made out of sweatshirt material; jean jacket is also a good idea; or lightweight suede; or lightweight leather; those Jcrew merino wool sweater jackets are good too!)
6. Comfortable shoes; the boots will work but you probably won't need thick socks unless you run cold. Maybe bring one pair of thick socks just in case the temp dips, otherwise, I get by fine with lightweight cotton peds in September under my booties. Include a pair of sandals.

This gives you maximum flexibility for temperature swings: you can pair the tops with the shorts and sandals if the weather is hot. Or pair with jeans if the weather is a bit cooler. Then pop on that merino wool sweater as the temps dip. If it's even chillier than that, add the lightweight topper over it all.

Definitely bring a good raincoat as it's hurricane season and has been raining a lot here as we get hit by the remnants.

New Englander here (and close enough to BOS) - although the weather is still hot, sometime in September it usually takes a turn for full-on Fall. I agree with Laurie- prepare for potentially hot days but cool mornings/nights. Layering will be key.

Enjoy your trip!

Clothing items under $175 are not subject to sales tax. Tax begins at the 176th dollar. There are several Uniqlo stores in the area. Newbury Street is high end, but there are plenty of other choices too. New Balance has an excellent outlet store in the Brighton neighborhood and a small retail outlet at their headquarters. There used to be a Buffalo Exchange near Boston University on Comm Ave. Will you be looking at schools in Boston or in surrounding areas. For instance, I think the area around Tufts may have more second hand shops. Are there any mass market retailers that are acceptable to him?

If you are very lucky you will get glorious weather in both places, with at least a 10 degree (F) difference between them. But, you may also get the humidity here in the DC area. Evenings in Boston will probably be cool enough for jeans, booties, light jackets by then.

While we go to Boston all the time, I realize I have literally never shopped for clothes there and I did not realize there is no tax on clothing - I will be shopping in Boston in the future! You can find all the usual places - ON, BR, etc as you move through the city.

Have a great time! I loved college touring with my kids and there are certainly a ton of great schools between the cities. Keep us posted.

PP, wow! I’ve been harassing my son to get new pants & shorts before we go. Maybe we should wait & do it there. Boston is our first stop. Where would you suggest a young man conscious of labor conditions go for not-expensive clothes in the area?

That sounds great. I’m still reeling from the early, abrupt end to summer here. I’m hoping to get a replacement while we are there. Even better would be if we return to the gorgeous fall weather we had here the last couple years. This chilly rain doesn’t usually start until October.

Boston is cooler than DC, of course—right now & on average. I bet highs will be in the low 70s when we are there. That’s just a tiny bit warmer than what it is here now. I’m comfortable in a lightweight cotton skirt but other people are dressed for fall, in boots, jeans, & parkas. I have no idea how people in Boston interpret such temperatures. Google does not tell all.

I'm a few hours from DC, but the main dif between August and September is the humidity goes down. I personally looooove the hot but less humid weather we get in Sept- Oct

We are finally doing the great college tours trip. My son has identified schools in and between Boston, NYC, and Washington DC that we will visit Sept 11-28 (with a few days to try on raincoats).

This trip has been planned and re-planned many times. The packing list I made for an earlier version (canceled) features light cotton, silk, and linen items. Now I'm thinking to take my suede jacket. The basics of what to wear on campus are completely comfortable for me from all my years as student, grad student, and faculty member. I always wear “walking shoes" and plan to pick from the finds here. The style part is easy; it’s the weather that’s tripping me up. I know the weather there has not taken the sudden lurch into fall that we’ve had here, but have a hard time believing it will still be hot in a couple weeks. There haven't been many recent WIWs from that coast, and of course the weather will change over the next few weeks.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
