Here's what I took on my last business trip (I'm in high tech marketing; the conferences I go to are filled with IT professionals). In this case, I also had opportunity to go out at night and visit friends so I wanted options I could "dress down" for after work.

I wore a black knit (doesn't wrinkle) dress on the plane, with comfortable Stuart Weitzman ballet flats:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/st.....at/3158470
.. and carried my black patent leather handbag which fits quite a lot.

I packed a three piece suit. In this case, it was taupe because I was traveling to FL in the spring. Just choose whatever is appropriate. If you are traveling in Fall, black would do. I also packed a second dress, three blouses, a pair of black slacks, a cardigan, and a pair of comfortable 8-hour heels. As well as a denim jacket and a clutch for dressing down the outfits after work.

15 pieces total:

3 piece suit (taupe)
2 dresses (one black, one color block in taupe, citron, and black)
1 coordinating slacks (black -- slim/skinnies)
3 blouses (one pink shell; one cream L/S; one black sleeveless with taupe polka dots)
denim jacket
cardigan
1 flats (two toned taupe and black)
1 heels (nude)
1 handbag (black)
1 clutch (cream)
1 black belt (if i did this over, I'd go with a leopard print belt to add interest.. but I didn't own one yet ;-)

Day 1: taupe skirt + cardigan + pink blouse + flats + black purse (worked because the flats have black in them)

Day 2: color block shift dress + suit jacket + flats. To go out after work, I swapped suit jacket for the cardigan (it turned out to be rather warm; denim jacket would also dress it down) and put on the heels.

Day 3: suit pants + creme L/S blouse + belt + heels. No layer, but any of my options would have worked.

Day 4: black pants + S/S patterned (black with taupe polka dots) blouse + heels. Again, worked with choice of blazer, denim jacket, or cardigan.

Day 5: traveled back in same black knit dress as I traveled there.

Tips/Lessons I've learned:

Definitely helps to build around a neutral color scheme. Mine, as you can see, was taupe and black and cream, with the wild pink blouse thrown in there for fun.

I could have easily worn different heels with some of these outfits, to make it more interesting, but I stuck to simple nude pumps as they worked with all of them and minimized amount of shoes I needed to take.

At these conferences we end up standing and walking A LOT. I saved the heels mostly for evening, or conference days when I knew I'd be sitting around, or attending only half day with time off my feet to rest.

Those SW ballet flats are worth EVERY penny if you need to save your feet.

A denim jacket dresses down business gear.

I could have gone another week mixing and matching with this capsule.

I didn't really need the black pants -- the suit pants OR the skirt could have been worn with the third blouse. But I took them anyway. These were not typical trousers; they are more trendy/slim fit. I was thinking about after-hours possibilities.

If you prefer skirts, skip the pants and add coordinating skirts. I didn't do this because I had no idea whether the conference would be freezing AC or too hot. I like to have options. I'd rather bring options, and not wear everything, and instead repeat items if necessary. For example, had it been colder, I'd have worn the pants again, instead of the skirt and dress.

I have learned for these conferences that I never really need more than one suit jacket.

Thank you all!

I think I have decided to do (at least for this trip)
Mon: black pants, blouse, suit coat, and flats for traveling and first day at the client
Tues: black dress with colored cardigan, heels
Wed: black skirt, colored blouse and either suit coat or black cardigan, flats
Thurs: black pants, colored blouse and suit coat for traveling and last day at client

How does that sound?

@crutcher - thanks for that website. I'm definitely going to check it out!

I usually try to pack items that color coordinate to reduce the number of pairs of shoes. I will pack a dress, a skirt, a pair of pants, a neutral jacket that works with them all, and a selection of tops that work with the jacket as well as with casual (jeans). I wear the most space consuming shoes for travel if possible. In fall and winter that is usually boots.

Good luck.

Definitely think in terms of capsules, and you might need slightly different capsules depending on the city. New York might be quite hot, as might NC (even later in the season) whereas it's possible it will be cooler on the west coast (depending where you are going).

Have you checked out Angie's blog posts on capsule wardrobes?

I agree that a suit -type outfit (whether or not it is an actual suit) and dresses that work with the jacket would be ideal. Consider a jersey dress simply for its wrinkle-free ease.

For shoes, I'd look into a wedge if you are used to heels. It will be more comfortable than a heel proper, and would still give you a bit of height. A lot of people here have the Cole Han Air Tali wedge. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/co.....mp/3172319

I like Glory's idea. A capsule that mix and matches. Lori, you look fair so maybe your suit is chocolate brown with cream or navy alternates. A couple of blouses/smart tops, a cardigan or 2nd jacket...brilliant for any trip

That is tricky. I used to travel tons in IT. I never wore skirts or dresses so I can only comment on the pants attire. I always took a suit in a small black/grey check. Then I take black trousers and a colourful cardigan. Depending on the length of the trip I would bring a black suit jacket and grey slacks. Add 3 lightweight shirts that can standalone without the jacket in case it is hot. I had took two pairs of shoes: ankle boots which were well worn and that is what I wore on the plane, around town etc. Then a pair of black wedges or pumps. Not sure I have helped but hope so!

HI Lori,

For NYC. especially if you are going to be working in Manhattan, I suggest you stick with a more traditional business casual, until you have an opportunity to see the environment. I work in Manhattan and visit plenty of different corporations in the area. The dress code is still fairly conservative, although you don't need to look staid to fit in.
I am not much of a poster in terms of WIWs so I cannot point to any pictures, per se, but I think any of the following options would look nice:

1- Summer dress with a cardigan or light blazer and simple pumps or wedges: Dresses and skirts are easy because you can wear flats for commuting back and forth, then wear your nice shoes once you get to your location. You have the issue of dragging your hems with pants.

2- Skirt and blouse or shirt and topper ( cardi or blazer) : Same advantages as above.

2- Trousers, blouse or shirt with either cardigan or light blazer: Super easy to do and you will fit just right in. Cropped pants are all over the place as well. Lots of people are wearing them with heels, but they can be a departure so proceed with caution.

Try to stick to natural fabrics. This is a walking city so you will appreciate the fact that you will not be scorching. The subway platforms are especially hot so make sure that the blouse or shirt you are wearing with your topper, looks OK on its own.

I would advise against putting too much creativity into what you are bringing. Creative business casual is not really that big or appropriate, especially in larger corporations, unless you are in a creative field. You will look great if you stick to basics, that fit properly. If you wear heels, try to stick to 3-4 inches and below. Taller heels can be frown upon in certain workplaces. Too nightclub.

NYC is famous for being the city where everyone wears black. Yes, it is partially true but don't be afraid to bring some color.

They might have casual Fridays, most corporations do, so a pair of dark wash jeans is always a nice addition.

I have not traveled to the other cities you have mentioned but I'm sure others will chime in!!!

I would be mindful of hem lengths on dresses and skirts. I would advise against anything shorter than 2 inches above the knee. Also, try to keep your accessories and makeup simple and subtle

Hi Suz! Thanks for the prompt reply.

I will be traveling next week to NYC, in two weeks to the West Coast and then in September to NC. So a little bit of everywhere.

I typically like heels but I don't know if I can wear them through the airport and through the city comfortably. That's why I was thinking flats. I just like the look of heels with skirts since I'm short.

I work in IT, so it's more business professional than business causal. Nice but suit coats aren't required, etc.

I hope that helps - please let me know if you have more questions. I'll answer them best I can!

When will you be travelling, Lori?

Are you a heels person or a flats person? I would suggest at least two pairs of shoes for NY so you can alternate.

And what is your working environment? Strict, or more open?

Hello, I am starting to travel a lot for work and am a horrible packer. I need to pack only a carry-on for four to five days. The first trip I'm going to NYC so I need shoes that are going to work from the plane, through the subway and to work, etc. What do you suggest on what to pack and what to wear on my feet? My feet are getting pickier as I get older. LOL.

If it helps, I am petite and am an hourglass with a tendency towards pear (I think).

Thanks so much!
