Not to downgrade the severity of anything, but we' ve stocked up on our supplies, checked all the flashlights etc.. and been watching the news where they send poor saps out in the rain to report and for us there is nothing (yet and this is a big "knock on wood") I'm hoping it's the usual much ado about nothing for us. Sadly I'm wearing khaki shorts and a white vneck tshirt. If I were to take a WIW photo I'd add a leopard belt or something, but that's not necessary at this point. Soon to move into Loungewear (pjs to watch a movie since we've not lost power - YET)

Just glad everyone is safe and hoping the damage is minimal.

Well, I've just received an email from my Dad.

I've put it here, because I thought it may make for interesting reading from some people from elsewhere, because it is "on the ground in the middle of NY" stuff. My Dad has been through quite a few floods/cyclones in his time, so he is a bit of a veteran about this kind of stuff in a way. It seems like he is concerned but not panicked. I guess my instinct is he feels resigned that they are going to be stuck in the apartment for a couple of days while everything shuts down:

"Dear K

Yes we are pretty well prepared, while a lot of rain forecast 10 inches is not a lot in cyclone terms, but the area is pretty soaked, so it will all go to runoff we are told. We all have torches, and the building is a large brick multi story apartment block at (edited to remove address).

We are on the second floor, both good and bad as it means the winds will have taller buildings around the area buffering our apartment. The bad thing is that there are a lot of road works in the area, so it is possible debry from that could fly. If the wind is really up we will move mattresses into the large foyer area well away from all windows. Yes plenty of money, and I lugged 12 1 quart fresh bottles of water back from the super market and my little PC has about an 8 hour battery life when fully charged - a state that will continue as long as we have power. We are also quite a long way from either side of Manhattan Island. They have shut broadway down for the weekend so they are trying think that they are concerned about people trying to travel more than anything else. So we will play it cautious and safe.

Love Dad

So there you go. I feel better knowing that he seems pretty prepared. Now I guess we just have to wait!

Thinking of all affected people out there! x

I'm from New York - I don't usually live here but I happen to be visiting at the moment - and mostly we suspect this is largely overreaction. It's pretty surreal that the subway will be closed for about 48 hours and they've evacuated chunks of Manhattan, but after Katrina, they would rather overreact and get people out than underreact.

We'll probably get a lot of rain and a lot of wind. We might have some power outages. It all just depends. But certainly it's wiser to get people out and keep canned food and bottled water on hand, just in case. The most likely thing is that it won't be a big deal and people will think it was a lot of hype for nothing.

On the official topic, the sense of humor I've seen around is this:
http://www.howaboutwe.com/date.....-hurricane

Well I've just received an email from my Dad who as I suspected, is now stuck fast in New York. I simply cannot believe the timing of this. What are the odds? First time he's been in the US for 20 years!

Apparently he has managed to get hold of water, cans and dry food and the manager of the hotel has "graciously" said they (my dad, his gf and my aunty) can stay 'till Monday. Like he has somewhere else to go. Grrrrrrr. He said that there is a bit of a state of panic going on in NY, simply because no-one knows what to expect. Great. People panicking.

He's meant to be flying out to Europe, but of course the airline won't confirm what's going to happen, because JFK is being closed. When he'll get out is going to be dependent on what happens with Irene and how much damage she causes. Of course, you know that! Sorry.

For people in the US, I'd appreciate it very much if you could give me updates of what is going on, as the news I receive in Australia is going to be broader or possibly delayed from what you guys receive. I'd love particularly specific news about New York and any news the central touristy area where he's staying.

Do take care everyone, I'll be thinking of not only my dad, but of you all and crossing all my fingers and toes! x

Great list of itps Katiepea!

I always keep on hand for a storm: hurricane or snow.

Candles, easy to carry around the house and enough light to see with. Water. Some food that does not require cooking. Usually fruit, lunchmeat and a loaf of bread do the trick.

Bella, if you have a Best Buy near you, they may have the Eton Red Cross crank, solar Randio which includes a light. You could call ahead and have them hold it....I have one and it is great in pinch.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Et.....&lp=3

I would also like to recommend Sterno ( canned heat ) and a folding "stove" :

http://www.dickssportinggoods......Id=4240372

and these glow sticks are great too - keep them in a zip lock bag ( you can buy them individually ) :

http://www.dickssportinggoods......Id=3024876

I keep my stuff in a dry bag.

The one big lesson from this is to always have an emergency pack ready.

ALicat, LOVE the list.

PS I have not decided on an outfit, as of yet. But I do want to remember a sun hat and sunscreen in case I have to work outside afterwards. I also bought water purification tablets. Today I am moving our brand new wonderful dog, named Finn to my mom and dad's. Then back home to handle the birdfeeders. I am almost ready.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE - and follow your state's instruction.

Katiepea: your picture gave me shudders :(, I'm sorry it happened to your house but glad everyone was OK... So far Friday welcomed us with a beautiful sunny skies and temps climbing up to 90's again.. So I can imagine some people will not acknowledge the hurricane coming, there were some mandatory evacuations started in the shore communities along the coast today, but it surely doesn't look like anything is coming...
It's my huband's birthday on Sunday, we were planning a fun day out with the kiddo, seems like we'll spend it holed up instead. Maybe a picnic in the living room will do?

I have the day off today, so DS and I were planning a trip to SO's house. (Those of you who came to SO's house for the swap understand why we had to change plans -- SO is right on the water in CT.) Also, Amtrak shuts down if someone sneezes, so in a hurricane, I knew we'd end up stranded. :(

I got groceries and filled up the gas tank last night, and today we'll be charging up everything that can be charged.

If we lose power, we'll have no sump pump in the basement, and it will take on water. This has happened before in a hurricane, so I'll also be making sure there's nothing in that corner of the basement that could be damaged by water.

Most importantly -- I have the September issue of Vogue. 758 pages of hard-copy fashion. That should keep me entertained by candlelight!

Oh, I forgot to mention insect repellent! That's handy to have as well. After a lot of rain and issues with sanitation = mosquitoes and flies.

Take care. Bella, try not to be scared.

I figure if my 86 year old Granny can say "Bugger this, I'm going to bed!" during the onslaught of Category 5 (Hurricane) Cyclone Yasi earlier this year, then I have every faith you can also get through it ok as well. (Yes, I *was* having a major stress out over that little episode of hers and was so relieved to hear that she was ok. Trust me when I say that story is going down in Katiepea's family folklore - they build them tough in North Queensland!)

Think of it as an opportunity to have a great story to tell the grand-kids one day. :-)

Even if you were to experience damage to your house, you realise pretty quickly it is only stuff. Trust me when I say that after my little experience (photo above is an example of just one room), I have not had an issue with hoarding since - in the end everything is just a thing and can be replaced. :-)

People and animals is what matters. I have every faith that everyone you know and care about and of course, you yourself(!) will be sensible and take every care to get into safe and secure surroundings and get your possessions in order. You will be ok!

<crossing my fingers and toes for you all and for my dad!>

Thanks for starting this thread, Beth. Get tips! I hope all of your animals will be okay during the storm, and I hope the goats won't be too frightened. I have been preparing over the past few days. We lived closer to the coast during Isabel and were evacuated. We were then without power for several days when we returned. I've stocked up on non-perishables, water, batteries, flashlights, charcoal and paper products. The cars have full gas tanks but I still need to pick up ice tomorrow.

What a crazy week! First the earthquake and now a hurricane! Everyone please take care.

This is going to be my first time and I am pretty worried. Irene isn't even supposed to get here before Sunday and all the major stores were already out of battery operated lanterns, radios and D batteries today.

Confirming katiepea recommendations. Stay safe...if you dont have to travel, then dont. If you had plans (like we did) to fly to any affected areas, contact your airline and firmly request a no-fee adjustment.

Take lots of care. Unbelievably, my father is up that way at the moment, so I'm feeling a little concerned myself. (I'm from Australia, so what are the odds?!)

In the past ten years I've been personally affected by natural disaster which means I've learnt a little the hard way about disasters. (I've included a photo to show you. Yes, I was home when it happened and yes, afterwards, I could see the sky, looking up from inside - it was one heck of a way to get a sky-light, tell ya. I'm so grateful that no-one was killed!)

Aside from practical things like tarps, torches etc, I'd like to add the following:

Have in one place and ready to go, your important papers including passports; any required prescriptions; birth certificates and insurance papers. This way you don't have to worry about trying to find them in the event of an emergency.

If it hasn't been mentioned make sure you have your mobile phone charged up. Keep your charger with your important papers.

For mum's with babies - make sure you have lots of nappies and formula and lots of wipes if you use it. Also have anti-bacterial gel to clean your hands after changing nappies in the event you don't have access to clean water.

Not particularly critical, but from a comfort point of view, after the QLD floods in January, milk and dairy products were in short supply for quite a while. A supply of powdered milk came in handy. A full gas bottle for your BBQ also is handy for heating up water afterwards in the event of no electricity.

In a natural disaster, petrol suddenly becomes very scarce. Please fill up your car now, so you know you can get out and about after it has taken place. This is honestly a true story as it happened first hand to my friend. She was in Japan when the Earthquake struck this year in Sendai. They had enough petrol in their car to be able to drive for seven hours to get their passports and then get to an airport to get out of the country. There was no public transport, no petrol available, so they were incredibly fortunate that the tank was on full, not empty. For quite a few years, I've always made sure that my car always had at least half a tank of petrol in it. You never know when you need to make a quick getaway!

I guess my ultimate point is that the natural disaster is very scary. For the majority of people, the disaster doesn't necessarily cause any severe damage to their home - it is more a case of a week or so of a little discomfort. Having those supplies on hand made for a much easier ride than other families experienced, I can tell you!

I'm thinking of you all! Please keep us up to date with how you are getting on. I am crossing my fingers for you! xo

I'm on the East Coast, too. We're a few hours inland, though, so hopefully the worst we'll get is some wind & rain. Hoping everybody is safe!

Thanks Beth - hope it won't be as bad as they're making it sound to be :(. We have never lost power in the past when there were shortages because of weather conditions (Northern NJ) so I hope that it won't happen this time either. We're going to stock up on bottled water and ice to preserve the perishables in the cooler if the power is out...

Hope all of our East Coast YLF-ers are making preparations for the weekend. While our farm preps are a little more involved, at minimum don't forget to stock up on batteries, bottled water, a radio, flashlights, and prescription medications if you need them.

Stay safe~
