Weird weather down here this time of year.

Lightweight clothes are perfect during the day time, but once the sun starts to set you'll need a sweater or a jacket to layer over the top.

I was visiting friends near Canberra a couple of years ago in late February to early March and froze due to mistakingly only taking summer clothes ( the warmest items I had were jeans and a cotton turtleneck skivvy ).

Luckily they had a jumper and jacket that fitted me I gladly borrowed !

No cobbles in NZ really, we are too new a country. Where in Auckland does your friend live? I could send recommendations for several outlet malls or shops with great choices in more than one area. We don't have the "made for outlet" phenomenon here, outlet is generally the real retail stuff from previous season/s and often excellent quality if you don't need absolutely up-to-the-minute stuff.

Sorry, I think I didn't phrase that part of my post well lol - I meant on the Auckland leg of my trip, I plan to visit the caves since my friend (who lives in Auckland) is partially Maori & therefore interested in showing me parts of their land & culture that they take pride in.

This is going to feel like a sartorially nostalgic trip then, considering the fact that I'm originally from England & therefore very used to dressing in layers lol! In fact, that's how I prefer to dress (I run warm & therefore get hot easily). I'll just need to see if I brought any of my good layers over with me though, lol!

I had heard about Melbourne's 4 season days, but I just wasn't sure if it would be the same during autumn/ fall time. I'm guessing that I'm going to find it quite chilly, coming from Hong Kong, but hopefully not too cold!

One thing I wanted to know about is footwear - should I expect cobbled streets & maybe some potholes, or bouncy tarmac & grass instead? I'm asking because I'm not sure if lighter & softer shoes would be preferable over a stiffer sole (for cobbles etc). I actually wanted to buy some new knee-high boots whilst I'm out there, so here's hoping! (Lol Hong Kong may have a lot of malls but I'm unfortunately too curvy for most clothes & tall boots here, so I'm hoping to do some shopping amongst clothes that are more my size haha! Any recommendations for good shopping spots lol?

I've never actually seen Penguins before, which is why I'm so excited! Thankfully my bum already has a lot of cushioning haha but I'll bring an extra blanket scarf just in case it does get cold lol!

Sounds fabulous!

As others have said Melbourne is famous for the four-seasons-in-one-day. I have needed a coat in Melbourne in February on more than one occasion! But layers are key, as it can get warm too.
The penguins are glorious - it's a great trip - but it is cold. I'd recommend taking something to sit on too, as I remember my bum getting really cold. We even bought a little knee rug, one time, to keep warm. But it was so much fun, and like no other penguins I've seen before or since, the sheer volume was amazing :)

How exciting!! As said previously it can be erratic weather - not snowing or freezing - but rainy and chilly - or you may be basking in the late summer sun!

I think jeans and a tee/ shirt would be about the right level of warmth - with a light jacket to carry. We are a mixed bag in what we wear - there are very few rules to follow.

Waitomo is fun - a decent/ long day trip from Auckland. In Auckland the beaches and water are the highlights - but there is a good art gallery and museum- and a few other attractions as well - your friends will guide you!! The shopping will not compare to Hong Kong but there is good shopping. And definitely the food is great - and the coffee - so many wonderful choices from ethnic eateries to modern cafes to quirky food trucks!!

Melbourne is a fab city - again the eating is a highlight!!

As Jussie and Jenni said, it's a good idea to wear layers if the weather goes iffy.

Cool! But Waitomo is not in Auckland it is 2-3 hours south. It will be varying weather where it could be hot and sunny in the day but cooler at night and could rain. People do camp in tents at Easter, it is our last long weekend where the weather may be OK. You need layers!

That’s exciting! If you need any recommendations for where to go in Melbourne I’d be happy to make suggestions.
The weather here at Easter is very variable, it can go from quite warm to freezing cold in the space of an hour so it’s a good idea to dress in layers. It’s usually very windy and cold at the penguins.

Hi everyone,

Planning on visiting Melbourne (Australia) & Auckland (New Zealand) for 2 weeks over Easter (possibly Wellington too, depending). It's just me travelling solo, so the itinerary is pretty open - I'll fly to New Zealand from Melbourne, so I'll likely be bringing just a carry on for that leg of the trip, but leave my suitcase in Australia. I'll be staying at friend's places & the odd hotel here & there, but haven't planned out too many specifics yet. In Melbourne, want to see St Philips Island for the Penguins, do some secondhand shopping (not many charity thrift shops in Hong Kong), eat some good food, see some cultural sites & take the tram. In Auckland I want to see the Waitomo (glowworm) caves & generally relax. But I still want to look nice whilst doing so. Anything I should keep in mind? Thanks in advance!
