You're all so cute. Great conversation. I do head for the T shirst in my closet first. However Dani has a point that we need to buy comfortable and stylish clothes. I just returned some shoes that have been sitting in my closet for a couple of months, I never wore them because the heel was to high. I think it is important to have the apperal feel good.

I do think that there's a time and a place for t-shirts. One of those is walking the dog at 6 a.m. As I've talked about before, my husband is a musician. Smart casual is not always the look I want when we go out to his shows. I still want to be fabulous but would like to have more of an edge. A vintage t-shirt is the kind of thing that kicks the edge up a notch.

Nicole, I agree. I also tend to wear them when I'm likely to get stains (BBQ can be one of those occasions too).

I must say there are exceptions to the tee shirt rule, even though I'd lose points for it. A friend of mine usually wears high end jeans with fitted tee shirts and she look fab. She is just lucky to have a perfect physique for it!

OK...I know I'm going to catch heat for this...but I think there is a time and a place for a nice tee shirt. When I'm spending time with my family on the weekends--say a bike ride to town (just a slow paced toodle, nothing that works up a sweat), or if I'm going over close friends for a BBQ, or if I'm hanging out in my back yard...I wear Tee Shirts. I would feel absolutely ridiculous in anything else.

I would not wear these tee shirts to work, out to dinner, or even to a PTO meeting. But there are times when the style of a relaxed outfit is appropriate.

Happylife- I also stocked up on "nice" t-shirts before coming to these forums! I was so thrilled that the Gap was offering petite tee shirts. I bought several scoop necks in different colors. In the early spring I even wore them under blazers and camis and still think they worked just fine (no difference than wearing a cami to me).

But my tastes are slowllly evolving. This summer I've only worn the tees as "gear" when we're out doing outdoor activities like boating or exercising etc or around the house with sweats as loungewear. I cannot bring myself to wear them with cotton skirts - which I did all the time last summer.

I agree with Dani that you can be comfy AND stylish. I'm very picky about that - if you are not comfy you are not going to feel confident.

With that said...

I have also slowly become used to a different level of "comfort." Good example is my Citizens Amber jeans. The fabric is not as soft and stretchy as the Huttons (which seriously feel just like wearing sweats to me!). They aren't uncomfortable - they just aren't sweat-pant comfortable. I wouldn't want to wear them on a long plane ride. But they aren't torturing me and making me miserable when I wear them. I can sit and bend and move and eat a restaurant meal and they're fine. They just aren't like wearing sweats. It's an in-between sort of thing. And they look so nice and hold their structure - so I feel great in them!

P.s. I've had a really looonnnngggg week so all day today I've been kicking back in old shorts and tee shirt. I'm a horror story today, fashion wise. I haven't even had a shower yet. If I was a battery, I'd have a blinking light saying "recharging in process." And yes, I ran out of the house twice today looking like this - to shuttle kids to and from their friends. I didn't have to get out of the car though.

San - I think that you are right about West Coasters and the casual look. I moved to Seattle from the South. When I first arrived, I always felt overdressed here because Southerners just dress up more. But after 20 years, I've become a West Coast girl and love dressing casually. I guess as I've gotten a little older, though (a few years past my 40th birthday), I feel like I want to be more put together -- to be comfortable and stylish. I have a number of "nice" tees in my closet and I'll keep wearing them. But I am having fun learning about style from YLF and spicing up my wardrobe. -- aj

Since joining youlookfab I have relegated my t-shirts to the back of my closet and I am paying attention to wearing nicer tops.

It feels so good.

I feel a little guilty though because before coming to these forums I stocked up on "nice" t-shirts and now I wish I had not!

I can wear them for yard work, exercise and camping I guess!

San, you can be comfortable AND be stylish. I've been very picky about what I buy. I don't have anything in my closet that's uncomfortable. It's just not worth it to me to have such an item. It does take effort to find tops that aren't t-shirts, but it can be done.

Shoes are a little more difficult, but they can be comfortable and cute. I probably try 3 shoes for every one pair that ends up in my closet. I love the free returns policy at online shoe stores :)

Are you finding yourself grabbing for your t-shirts when you go in your closet in the morning?

I know what you mean, San. There are some days that I just want to wear what feels comfortable and not care if I look stylish. But I'm trying to balance the two more now and look stylish at least 1/2 the time!

We Americans are so into comfort. That is why we like our T-shirts and flip flops. We are a cuddley bunch. I find it difficult to move away from the comfort zone. I always go for the comfort verses the style.
