Rockabilly to me is 50s with a bit of a dark edge. Gals at my high school were very into this. Flared skirts, cuffed jeans, perfectly curled hair, bright red lips, buncha tattoos. I don't think you need to Dress Up As A Rockabilly to go to this event, though. A nod to 50s/the South/burlesque should be fine. Not the super femme 50s looks, though. Moto jacket with some shorts and fishnests? cuffed/rolled skinnies with a sheer top and heels? red lips fo sho.

Sorry about the lateness of this comment. I know you may not see this till after the event.
The weekend is the only time I have got for commenting, and sometimes I don’t
even have that, but here goes..

By
the way, hope you are still going to this event tonight anyway. I reckon you are going to have a ball; for
once you will be surrounded by people who are “out there” with their clothes –
your kind of peeps! I reckon there will be a lot of skin, wall-to-wall tattoos,
and lots of dramatic costume, makeup, and hair. Such fun!

And
your hourglass figure is just perfect for fifties styles. I don’t know whether you have any pieces in your wardrobe that
are either retro or classic - which is what you would need to pull together something
that looked “authentically fifties”( I do recall that you have a tight sheath
dress)—but even using very current trendy pieces, I think you can pull off the
vibe- especially with any modern piece that is simply a classic shape in a “now” print.

For inspiration starters,
here is an “authentic” fifties costume- note the headgear and tights!
(I do think a touch of cleavage would not be out of place, if you are comfortable
with that).

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LiMt.....girl-lg.jp

And here is the 2012 version. Note headgear and tights
again. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tjXv.....sterwm.jpg

(In fact this outfit could be forties, or early
sixties Mods- and- Rockers, but who cares? Rockabilly today is really a re-imagining of the fifties anyway
. As you can see, the dress is not even a “fifties” sheath/pencil style. NB>
the wearer is a Vivienne Westwood devotee ( http://golden-wasteland.blogspot.com.au

And here’s someone you know, wearing some fifties elements
in an eighties palette. As with Westwood, there is a lot about eighties punk
which references the fifties. http://kingdomofstyle.typepad......970c-700wi

I also got some inspiration from fifties movie genres. If you
only have mini-length dresses and skirts, rather than kneelength, you could play
up the burlesque aspect.( e.g. add fishnets:))

Got any animal print? A sharktooth necklace?
Try jungle style. The back scratcher and the cheetah are optional. Headband is compulsory
:).

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xm6M.....f7d626.jpg

http://a2.ec-images.myspacecdn.....c9c2/l.jpg

It might be too cold, I imagine, for the next outfit, but I couldn’t
leave out Hawaiian style! Got a sarong? flattering, easy, a tad burlesque.

Ø
http://www.picsdrive.com/conte.....ure-11.jpg

And a forties pic (but just mentally replace the
shoes and coat with fifties pieces). Um, did I mention fishnets?

Ø
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/.....cd49_b.jpg

Cowgirl
pinup – so easy to do this one as a variant on your current style! Only, where
are her fishnets?:( http://farm7.staticflickr.com/.....fb12_o.jpg

And here are some other looks that use pants rather than
dresses or shorts.

http://modculture.typepad.com/.....970b-800wi

http://modculture.typepad.com/....._pants.jpg

http://media-cache-ec3.pintere.....fdd60f.jpg

Now Beat looks are my personal favorite, so I couldn’t leave
them out- they are still a fifties style, after all. The fifties look wasn’t always
polished and defined, the beatniks and bikers and teddygirls were deliberately scruffy,
and intentionally wore menswear looks . You could throw together this teddy
girl style in a flash:

http://img.photobucket.com/alb.....teddy1.jpg

Here are some actual female beat girls :

http://www.nickelinthemachine......island.jpg

http://www.nickelinthemachine......g-life.jpg

How easy to copy are these outfits above? If your pants aren’t
highwaisted enough for the fifties, you can belt your shirt over them, as one
woman has done above, and still look the part.

Here is Bridget Bardot doing a beachcomber/beatnik look
with a whopping headband. Note the messy teased bedhead: http://cdni.condenast.co.uk/42.....x639_1.jpg

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4mfN.....ardot4.jpg

Beat looks were ahead of their time and can be hard these
days to distinguish from modern casual style - the defining thing is the heavy makeup
and big hair, which is where you would have to put the emphasis. You could buy a
cheap liquid eyeliner from your nearest $2 shop, some industrial strength hair
styling concoction with the words “extreme” ”gum”, “wax”, or “mud” in it from the
supermarket, and start back combing! (Amy
Winehouse- style, but without the wasted look.)

And just to get you further into the beat mood and attitude:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QD1y.....VD_003.jpg

http://www.grolschfilmworks.co.....qlyvgt.jpg

Wishing you a fun night! Let us know what you end up wearing.

Rockabilly makes me think of rolled up jeans and leather jackets, red lipstick, mascara and black eyeliner and up do hair (ponytail or some kind of twist), bowling shirt or BF button down tied in the front. Burlesque conjures up fishnets, cleavage, feathers, silky slip dresses or robes. Interesting idea for a party theme. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I don't have any good ideas either, but had to comment on your use of 'tarnation' - that sure made me smile. :)

I think CocoLion has some good ideas - start with the leather leggings, add vibrant makeup and take it from there. I wouldn't veer too much toward the burlesque end of things, but that's just me. At the same time, I do think that rockabilly can look almost too retro...so if there's a way to mix up the two, then I'm all for it. Perhaps the 'glam' of burlesque can add some elegance to the rockabilly? I know that sounds weird, but that's the first thing I thought.

I vote going through your closet, and pulling any pieces that could possibly be considered even remotely burlesque, and then doing the same for 'rockabilly' and seeing if there's a way to combine the two.
Wow, this is such an eclectic combination, anything goes.

Burlesque sounds dressy and Rockabilly Blues infers retro/vintage as well as gritty RATE. I think you will have to decide which direction to go in. Rockabilly is a fairly specific dress code with vibrant make-up -- so vibrant make-up is a must!

Really I think this is a great occasion to go all out with some things you've been wanting to wear.

I think leather leggings are a good starting point if you don't want to go with a dress.

Gosh I have no idea if any of that is helpful.

Next Saturday I'm going to something billed as Rockabilly Blues and Burlesque. I have no idea what exactly is in store.
So the big burning question, what in tarnation do I wear?
Leather leggings? Fringe boots?
