I have the Eddie Bauer girl-on-the-go trench and can vouch for it. It's my default travel coat for cool/cold weather where I only want one coat and there is going to be any amount of rain, because it's totally waterproof. I wear it a lot at home too. Not glam or fancy, but looks good and does the job.

Thank you all for your input! I will definitely be taking your suggestions for avoiding jet lag on the long flight.

The darkest color is navy (no black). Here’s where I’m at so far:

What I already have:
Heattech
Two pairs pants, two pairs capris, sneakers, tops

What I purchased and am keeping:
Eddie Bauer wrinkle free shirt
Quince long pants (never heard of this brand but I like the pants)

Items for consideration on their way to me:
Two skirts from Nordstrom (I’ll probably just keep one)
Eddie Bauer long raincoat
Cole Haan short packable rain jacket
Vessi waterproof sneakers

I couldn’t figure out how to do Finds on my phone, so I just did screenshots.

Hi just chipping in- we were in Switzerland last September - Geneva, Vevey ( near Montreux) Zermatt and Lucerne- absolutely loved it. Warmer than I’d thought it might be but definitely happy I had a couple of light cashmere layers and a short puffer - type jacket to wear with jeans, especially in Zermatt. The days were beautiful and quite warm, but nights cool. Found it a very easy, friendly and stunning country to travel through. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Ps re jet lag there is a great app called Timeshifter which is free the first time you use it. You enter flights and it works out a schedule for you to prepare from about three days before a flight. I used it last year- New Zealand to Europe and back- and I think it helped.

From what I understand, Ireland and Scotland are a bit less formal than Switzerland. That being said, all are more formal than U.S....if that's where you're from.

I would make sure I had a GREAT pair of walking shoes that is NOT sneakers. That could even duck into a cafe for dinner, if needed. Like flat boots, or a nice, flat Mary Jane. Or, if you opt for sneakers, pick VERY fashionable, trendy ones that make a statement...so it looks like you meant to do that.

Other than that...guessing the weather...I'd pack layers. Even long underwear. So many times I have triumphed amid friends because I have long-underwear leggings under my pants, and can go anywhere.

Yes anywhere from NZ is a long way too - 17.5 hours to Dubai and 16 hours to Chicago.

I do like to walk around a bit to stretch - my last flight had spare space which was useful. But when in your seat always have the seatbelt fastened.

I just power through the first day too mostly, a 1-2 hour nap is okay but no longer.

Lots of great advice here :)

I am a pro at flying LONG distances! It takes 2 days to travel to Africa from Seattle - two long flights and a long layover - and we have done that many, many, times. And I fly economy class.

Here are my top tips:

(I'm nodding along with Suz and MsMary).

aisle seats, or two seaters

noise cancelling headphones make a HUGE difference. Bose makes the best.

WARM LAYERS. The a/c is arctic on a long flight.

cashmere wrap to use as a blanket

bring snacks!

face masks

wipe everything around you with sanitary wipes

we never sleep on a plane, but if you can sleep - try to!

we use a sleeping aid on the other side for a couple of days, and power through the first day because adrenalin keeps us going!

Stay hydrated, and close your eyes when you're in the loo on the plane. They can be challenging during a long flight ;)

Connect to the free wifi on the flight

If you're bringing a laptop or iPad, bring your favourite shows to watch.

Flying East is much worse for jet lag than flying West.

Bring a lightweight puffer, a raincoat, and a dressier jacket!

How exciting! I second the comfortable shoes as you will be doing lots of walking including puddles and cobble stones. Be sure to take or 3 pair to let them dry out between wears. Have a rain coat with a hood and umbrella too.

Years ago, we visited Scotland in August. It was very warm for one day, and then suddenly it was rainy, flooding at times, for the rest of the trip. So rain gear would be on my list, along with waterproof walkable shoes.

Even more years ago, I visited Switzerland in September. It was chilly and I wore a wool duffle coat every day. I would not take a coat like that, but maybe some sort of puffy jacket. I have a Patagonia Nanopuff, so I’d take something more like that. Maybe you won’t need it, and if you don’t, then lucky you, right?!

I recommend business class. Is it possible to fly Turkish Air? It’s the best airline I’ve ever flown. In first class you can lie down. In business class, you can’t reach the seat in front of you.

Lots of great advice here. I can confirm that people are dressy in Zurich. I was there for Christmas a few years ago and was in awe of their winter style. It's COLD there in winter (like here in New England) and there were some classy puffers and a lot of thick wool overcoats, gorgeous boots, sweaters etc. You won't need those things in August Lots of dark colors - maybe that's the trick to feeling very polished even if you're wearing casual clothes.

I was in Scotland many years ago, in June, before it was easy to get weather reports on the internet. It was much colder than we expected. You've gotten advice here about bringing multiple puffers/fleece/merino etc and I would do that. If I went back I'd think about a set of layers to bring where the full set would be really warm, and I could pick and choose as needed. It rained every single day, although some days it was quite light. Not sure if that's true for August. I had a long lightweight raincoat which was perfect but I didn't quite bring enough layers to wear under it to be really comfortable. Scotland is such a beautiful country that you really want to be outside!

And you will LOVE Kirkwall ... we spent 4 days total on the Orkney Islands (in Kirkwall and on the island of shapinsay) and it was wild, rugged, and spectacular. There is a large cathedral in Kirkwall. If you get a chance to attend a church service or concert and are into that sort of thing definitely do it, the acoustics are spectacular. Oldest cathedral in Scotland, Romanesque architecture ... google if it if it interests you.

Suz gave you fabulous advice for long haul flights!!

Love your jetlag approach Suz - as someone who sometimes has to work overnight, I am a big believer in natural light & spending time outdoors when it comes to body clock issues. I have a week long Europe trip coming up in the fall (shorter than I generally prefer because of the jetlag and travel time involved) so will return to this thread to help maximize our stay.

Okay. I can understand why you might wish you were staying! However, for packing, it will make things a lot easier because the trips have different needs.

Jet lag is a real thing! It affects different people differently, of course.

I've just returned from my trip to the UK which involved a 4 am waking, 2 hour ferry, transit to airport, several hours' wait, and 9 hour flight across multiple time zones. And I am happy to say I suffered almost NO jet lag. A first for me, flying east. I have no trouble flying west. This article is quite interesting on that subject, and possibly helpful for planning.

Here's what I did, that helped. For three days before my flight, I woke up one hour early each day and tried to go to bed one hour earlier. When I woke, I immediately went outside into the daylight without sunglasses for 40 minutes to an hour, then I remained in bright light for the morning, through the mid-afternoon (wearing sunglasses later on). I also drank coffee in the mornings, but stopped before noon. I took no sleep aids or melatonin, but some people say taking melatonin helps at night. It doesn't agree with me so I opted not to take.

About an hour into our flight (which left late afternoon from Vancouver), I put on a eye mask to darken my surroundings. I find regular neck pillows worse than useless, so I splurged on this thing -- a Turtl travel pillow -- and wore that, plus my headphones on noise cancellation or on my audiobook. We had a lot of screaming kids on our flight sitting nearby. Did I sleep? Not really. But I rested in the dark for bout 7 hours, and dozed for about an hour or 90 minutes during the flight. About an hour before landing, I got freshened up a bit. I also drank a lot of water. I didn't even eat the first meal -- I wan't hungry when they came with it and I decided resting was better for me.

I won't pretend I wasn't tired, but I got through an entire day in London, managed some tricky transit switches, got to the place we were staying, settled in, explored the neighbourhood, went for a walk through a local park, enjoyed a good lunch and a delicious dinner, and felt perfectly fine throughout. Spending time outdoors was key. I also had an espresso at lunch!

I slept well, woke early, and felt fine the next day.

There are apps you can get or sites you can consult for a plan. (I

Mr. Suz and I never buy business class because, $$. But it's undeniably better, if you can afford! If not, try to select your seats, if you can. I prefer a window, he prefers an aisle. So we often have a stranger between us. Such is life! (I like the window so I can lean my head; he likes the aisle because he needs to use the facilities).

Wherever you are sitting, DO try to get up as often as you can to stretch, walk a bit, keep the circulation going. Avoid alcohol. Drink a lot of water. Eat light.

It will be a little trickier for you to make use of natural light because it will be autumn, not spring, but in that case you can try a light box (the kind people use for SAD) or just bright artificial light. I have to admit, I tried this once for a trip overseas in February -- to less successful results. :)

Pack your carry on carefully and ensure it (or a portion of it) will fit under your seat so you will have access to things you need. More than that, realize that it can be very difficult to get at your under-the-seat carry on and open it up and pull out what you need, so keep organized there. Things I always bring in my backpack/ personal item:

Passport
Face masks
tissues
Computer
Kindle/ipad
phone
earbuds
Something warm -- whether that be a compact packable puffer (what I did this trip) or a blanket. The airplane blankets are not always great and flights can be insanely cold. I wore my puffer on my last trip.
Pillow (of some kind)
Small moisturizer, sanitizing wipes, saline eye drops. (Flights can be dirty and dry.)
Something to suck on for take-off and landing. (Prevents your ears from popping).
Sunglasses.
Notebook.
Scarf

Seconding Ms. Mary's idea about tights. You could also bring Heattech layers, really thin ones, or silk or merino, as Sal suggested. I strongly recommend merino layers for the Scotland/ Iceland journey.

My advice: Spring for business class so you can sleep on the long flights! As for the time changes, I just power through. I expect to be tired the first day or so but I'm usually so excited I don't even care!

Also: Fleece lined tights are a great layering piece for cold climates!

Yes, MsMary, long underwear! I didn’t think of that but I’m the queen of wearing it in colder weather.

Suz, we’re coming home in between, and I kind of wish we were just staying since there’s only a week and a half between the two trips (we normally wouldn’t have planned it that way, but the prices were too good to pass up).

I’ve never flown overseas before so any advice for long flights and big time changes is also much appreciated!

Wow, Karie, you are seeing the world! Amazing. Are you going straight from Switzerland to Scotland/ Iceland or going home first? In other words, will you pack twice? If packing twice, I'd be looking at slightly different stuff for each trip.

For Switzerland -- good walking shoes or trail runners/ hikers, a comfortable sneaker or other shoe for days that are more walking than hiking, and maybe a slightly dressier shoe for evenings? As Angie said, in the larger cities, the Swiss are chic. For that trip, you'll definitely want a dress or nice skirt or something that looks dressier than gear.

For Scotland/Iceland, in addition to the shoes mentioned above, I'd consider a comfy chelsea boot. It will be later in the year, and cooler there.

DEFINTELY take a lightweight puffer that you can wear alone or as a layer under raincoat or over a light sweeater.

I went to Iceland in July a few years ago and it was exactly like our So Cal winters. I took long underwear, leggings, jeans, merino sweaters, flannel shirt or two, puffer coats (long and short), puffer vest, walking boots, sneakers, and was super comfy the whole time.

One thing I LOVED was that geothermal energy is so cheap there, they crank up the heat and then crack open the windows to let in the fresh air! Also don't forget to try the Icelandic hot dogs! And skip the fermented shark (I tried it so you don't have to -- I'm an adventurous eater but it was all I could do not to spit it out!!).

Oh, and of course bring swimwear for the cruise and for the communal spas in Iceland!

Thank you for the great suggestions!
In Switzerland, we will be in Lucerne, Bern, Gruyeres, Montreux, the Vaud Alps, Geneva, Martigny, Sion, Zermatt, Baverno, the Simplon Pass, St. Moritz, Grindelwald, and Zurich.
We are allowed one large suitcase and one small carry on or backpack each. They take care of the large suitcase and we do our own carry on (ours will be backpacks). We fly in and out of Zurich. There will be a lot of walking, sightseeing, and some hiking too.

In Iceland and Scotland we’ll be bringing two large suitcases, one carry on and one or two backpacks. We will be visiting Glasgow, Reykjavik, Isaf Jordur, Akureyri, and Kirkwall. We will be doing a lot of walking and some hiking. We fly in and out of Heathrow.

I like the idea of starting the packing process with my shoes - I will need comfortable walking shoes, or even waterproof sneakers.

I have a packable puffer and maybe I should bring that in case it’s chilly? Or a raincoat with a zip out lining so I’d only need one coat?

I like the mention of slipper socks! I also think I’ll need a dressy raincoat, or at least a knee length one with a hood.

Thank you all! Keep those suggestions and links coming please!

Iceland and Scotland will be very casual and practical, but you might bring something packable and pretty for dinner on the cruise. I rolled my eyes at the idea, but brought a one-and-done dress and was glad that I did.

A jacket with a couple of zip pockets. You will feel more secure about your wallet, room key, phone, whatever, and can relax and gaze around to your heart's content. Maybe this could be pants with zip pockets. When I travel, I usually bring a wristlet that holds the bare minimum (which never leaves my wrist), as well as a soft, light sling or crossbody bag. I only carry a bag if I think I will be shopping or absolutely need to bring water (a hike).

Definitely a scarf or two - they can keep you warm AND make you look more fancy if needed. I tend to buy scarves as souvenirs since they are light and unbreakable! So I only bring one from home and keep my eye out. Slippers or slipper socks so your tired feet can relax but still walk down the hall to the ice machine.

The cruise will have laundry, and thought it seems like a luxury, I thought it was a bargain for having lovely clean clothes near the end of our trip. You might do this at the very beginning.

It sounds fabulous and I want to go along!

Warmish layers.

Light puffer, raincoat, and a dress jacket.

Not sure where you're going in Switzerland as I've only been to Zurich - where people are dressy!

Sorry that I don’t have specific recommendations but my cardinal rule is to always begin with what shoes you will need and then work from there. What a great trip you get to plan for and take!

How exciting! You always seem to go on the most interesting trips. I also suggest warm clothing (sweater, light-weight puffer, beanie, scarf) and comfy shoes. I think you could take inspiration from your cold Caribbean cruise travel capsule.

I like the suggestions so far. I am helping my Dad pack for a land tour in Canada as well as a cruise to Alaska so thinking along the same lines.

I know you like hiking so I would take shoes suitable for off road walking - either trainers or light weight hikers.

I like light weight merino tanks as an extra layer - with one of these, a tee a light weight puffer you are set for lots of weather!

How exciting! This will be an amazing trip!

How much, and what kind, of luggage will you be bringing? Will someone be taking care of your bags the whole time (i.e. the bus people drop them at your accommodation, the cruise people put them on the ship and you go from there) or do you have to do some carrying of stuff yourself?

Will there be hiking out trips?

Will you be arranging food for yourselves or will that all be part of the deal?

What parts of Switzerland? Where in Iceland and Scotland will you disembark (if at all).

Lots of questions, but this will help guide your thinking.

My first thoughts are:

Footwear.
Lightweight puffer.
Rain coat (s). Preferably layerable.
MERINO WOOL.
